Adequate replacement for th eoriginal Stir Crazy popper
I have an original West Bend Stir Crazy popper that I have owned for more than 30 years. The popper unit still works perfectly, but the dome lid was dropped and broken, and in the absence of an available replacement, I bought this new unit. It is an adequate replacement, but there are some pros and cons that I should point out – Pros: 1) The little bends in the stirring bar are something that I identified as a desirable feature from the beginning with my original Stir Crazy, to prevent the stirring bar from rubbing the non-stick coating off of the circular ridge in the heating surface. 2) The cover that snaps onto the lid to cover the butter-melting feature is better designed than on the original. Cons: 1) The power cord is too short, and I prefer the removable cord of the original design. 2) While storage for a fixed cord is nice, the storage feature in the new popper is poorly designed; it is fussy and difficult to use. 3) The On/Off switch is an unnecessary complication. Additional comments: • The reshaped lid, which allows the popper unit to be stored in the lid, is no improvement over the original design; I wouldn't store the popper in the lid for fear of damage. It is smaller in diameter and taller; not a spherical section like the old one. • The new popper unit seems to start popping slower, and finish slower and more gradually than the original unit, even with the same brand of kernels (Orville Redenbacher’s Original) and same type of oil (olive oil) that I have used for years with my original Stir Crazy. In conclusion, while this new version of the Stir Crazy works well enough, if the lid for my old one had not been broken I would not have bothered to buy this new one. I guess that I can only hope that this one also lasts 30+ years – if it does it will probably outlive me!

Works fine, PITA to clean!
Why I bought this: Here in Arizona we have Harkins theaters. They have great popcorn, so much so that during the pandemic when they were closed, they were selling gigantic bags of it curbside. Cars were lined up around the entire parking with folks trying to get their fix. This is the corn I was trying to duplicate. I had success in only 2 attempts. Since it's hard to find the exact amounts of stuff to use in this machine, I'll pass this along to you. First, you need butter flavored Coconut Oil (the yellow stuff), and butter flavored salt (Flavacol). I bought them both together. Type this in the Amazon search bar B09XVMP7BF and you'll go right to it. There are only two of us here so I'm only making a batch that fills the bowl by 3/4. We like it salty so 2 tsp of Flavacol is pushing the upper limit. You may want to start with 1 if you are intolerant to salt. I think 1.5 would be about right for most people. Here's what to do: Place about 3 TBSP of coconut oil in the machine, then add 1.5 - 2 tsp of Flavacol and 1/3 cup of ORVILES original kernels. REMOVE THE COVER FROM THE BOWL and place the bowl on the machine. LAY A PAPER TOWEL ON TOP, otherwise oil will splatter out the top. Turn it on and wait. You'll here some grinding as the kernels scrape along. This is normal. When the kernels pop at 2-3 apart at the end, turn it off. PLACE THE COVER BACK ON THE BOWL, grab the handles and turn the whole thing over. DONE! Now for the suckie part: some oil will splatters and drips down the insides of the bowl. Problem is it ends up in plastic handles, then when you invert the unit the oil well drip on your countertop. Again paper towels are useful here. The bowl itself is hard to clean because you can't fill it up with soapy water because of all the holes in the bottom. Best to fill a sink up and wash or use the dishwasher top rack. Next is the cooker. Remove the nut holding the spinner and remove both. Wipe all the crap out of the cooker with paper towels paying attention to the handles and the seam that goes around the entire machine. You're going to need a few towels. It's a good machine otherwise. Good luck and happy popping. PRO TIP: heat the oil before adding the kernels and the Flavacon. You want it to start popping a soon as possible so as not to have a layer of sludge in the bottom of the machine.

DONT BUY
Terrible design. I had the old red one it was great. This one sucks. The bar doesnt reach all kernels, stinks of chemicals, tons of unpopped kernels, messy, avoid

Good Popcorn
Had an older popcorn maker (different brand) that was still working but showing its age. Decided to try this one. First time using it I found many kernels did not pop. Pops slower than my old machine because the second time I left it on much longer hoping I was not burning the popcorn. To my surprise it worked very well with only about 6 kernels left. I have used three times now and it seems to be working well. What I do like about this popcorn maker over my old one is how you can put the lid under the unit for storage and how the stir tray stays clean after use (no oil residue).

Glad I Took the Chance
It makes great popcorn and leaves no kernel unpopped! I do not prefer the melted butter feature as I like to put it on top . My only concern is the plastic is a little thin so I am very careful not to crack it. Otherwise it is great and glad I saved the money over the other unit I was looking at.

Beware of this manufacturer!
This was my third West Bend popper. They don't last long. Started having problems as it would cool down and not pop all the kernels. This was after a couple of months or so. Past the return window. So I contacted West Bend customer service for warranty. So hard to get an answer back, hardly replied to my emails.... it went on and on. I finally gave up. It's been over a month and nothing from them. I'll never buy their products again. Got the Hamilton Beach machine. Wow! It's great..... recommend that highly.
