These are for small deer.
These do not work well for deer that are corn fed and have big antlers. The directions are terrible. I had to grind the back of the skull cap so that the antlers are almost touching the plaque. There is no way that you could make a circular cut to go around the antlers. I also had to grind down the top of the skull cap to get the cover to go down far enough to touch the plaque. I ended up wasting one of the covers trying to get it to fit but used it for a template for the others. It works better if you take a piece of wire and bend it around the antlers then use the wire as a template to make a u shaped hole to fit around the antlers. The rope trim will cover the u shaped opening. The walnut plaques are nice quality and have a nice finish.

Displays my first archery deer so well! Very happy with the quality.

Just ok
My son actually got antlers sent to him as a present! They were cut a little large and the cloth part of this display wouldn’t fit and my son wanted the fur visible! So we just screwed the antlers to the wood piece

RETINAMAN SAYS first timers read this
Keep in mind that two antlers originating from the skull cap will be assymetric with regard to their X, Y, & Z axes,...AND their circumferences....so do as I say and not as I did, ie get 1 or 2 of those clear deli meat tub containers and use them as practice templates becasue the chance of you free hand cutting the holes nicely the first time is about ZERO. Keep in mind that supplied gold cord is a finishing aesthetic touch but much like the back plates on tub faucets when they come thru fiberglass,...they are mainly to hide the flaws of an imperfectly cut hole. The plaque itself is of sufficient quality and has a decent look. the short fuzz skull cap cover is rubberized vinyl....this makes it tuff which is good, but also a little harder to cut. Lighty mark your cut margins with a pencil ,(not sharpie which can be washed out....almost) and trim with exacto or I used a scapel blade. I would buy this kit again, and I would be less headstrong and use disposible template first to train my eye on making more accurate cuts. From the wall it looks ok, but close inspection shows slight gaps. Plaques has wall hanger included. Keep in mind if your skull cap is large, you should decenter mount point on plaque upward or bottom edges of cap my extend past lateral margins of plaque. I thought I cjould pick flesh off my skull cap and wait for natural decompsure, but this was taking a long time and had a bad order understanably. I consulted youtube for cap boiling instructions which was a big help. This is a well made product and created a good cap mount for my first buck. Use practice template. Evaluate thrice, cut once. Good luck and good hunting

Does the Job
It is simply made; the walnut plaque is c and c machined and it's pretty decent. It has a flat satin finish but if one wanted more gloss, a coat of polyurethane would be easy. The veloured skull cap is not too flimsy but one has to be very careful cutting the two holes for the antlers as you only get one chance. I made a paper pattern that fit exactly on the cap then cut out trial holes on that first. Once I got that right I transferred the pattern to the skull cap and cut with VERY sharp x-acto blade. I had to trim a lot of the bone away to make the cap fit but still leaving enough to hold the two antlers! Drilled two holes into the bone and easily mounted it to the plaque using two drywall screws they provided. You must tape the gold rope in the middle where you will cut; then a hot melt glue gun secured the ropes into place around each horn.

Appearance after it's completed. It was time consuming but, worth the effort.

A very good quality wall mount with a genuine walnut plaque
This do-it-yourself antler wall mount is of pretty good quality overall. I used it to mount a decent set of mule deer antlers that my son bagged this season. It looks great, but it will take LOTS of time and patience to configure it just right. Be prepared to trim, re-trim and re-trim again as necessary the skull bone so it will fits securely and squarely against the plaque. The plastic skull cap will have to be carefully cut for holes to fit the diameter of the main tines at the base where they connect to the skull. Use a sharp razor knife and cut a little at a time then see if it fits the tine. You'll going to have to do this several times to get the perfect fit. Don't rush it or you may cut a too large a hole at which point the gold rope trim won't cover the gaps. However the following are cons: The plastic skull cap only uses two brass capped tacks to secure it in place, one on top and one on the bottom. This leaves the sides of the cap vulnerable to bulging up from the surface of the plaque. Even when you've carefully cut the holes out for diameter the of the main tines the sides may still tends to pop up just a little. I finally secured the sides in place with a dab of super glue gel around the edges. Some people may not mind the slight gap but I'm pretty annul about quality so I took the extra time. It would have been nice if Walnut Hallow would have fabricated the plastic skull cap so several more brass tacks could be used around the entire circumference of the cap, thus keeping it flush against the plaque. The additional brass tacks would also add to the appearance of the mount. One more tip, use a plastic tipped finishing hammer to drive the brass tacks. A steel hammer head could possibly damage the brass finish if you're not extremely careful. Good luck and enjoy your trophy.

Tricky to make it look right
I felt all the materials were well made, just definitely not as easy to do and make it look as nice as the pictures.

Satisfait

Nice wood plaque
Walnut plaque is very nice. The gold cords are a bit big and too flashy for me. Overall this is a good product and not too difficult to mount antlers. Much easier than doing it with foam and leather.
