Quality Unit
Very impressed with the quality of this unit, unlike many cheaper versions this one just feels top notch. Nice removable rubber duck antennae DONT GO CHEAP, THIS ONES REALLY NICE Receives signals well and audio is very clear. Lots of features and display color choice. Only two gripes are that, only an old style cigar lighter type charging lead is provided so no convenient home charging lead, plus no dash mounting holder just a soap on a rope type holder. yes understand this is hand held portable unit but this is 2023

good radio but a very poor charger
this is my third and last radio from uniden. the radio itself works well and i like having knobs to turn the volume and the squelch rather than push buttons like on other radio models. the sound through the speaker is a bit distorted as it got wet a few times...would by nice to have a "burp"feature" on it. Now for the charger...what a piece of junk! got my first radio years ago and the plastic clips that hold it to the radio broke in a short time. i had to wrap black electrical tape around it to hold it to the radio in order to get it to charge. this year while trying to attach the charger to the radio i lightly bumped the chargers plug against a wooden table and the end snapped off. now i had a radio i liked but no way to charge it! i wanted another small radio (fits in several of my pfds nicely) so i took a chance and ordered another one like it. i reasoned that if i was careful i would have a new charger and maybe i could get a few years out of my old one yet. well when i received the new one i took everything out of the packaging and clipped the charger to the new radio...immediately one of the clips on the charger broke! i was hoping that maybe after all this time maybe uniden had enough complaints about their charger and made a better one. they did not:( it is a real shame to have a decent radio on the market and then pair it with a cheap charger. guess i'm back to wrapping the charger and radio together with tape in order to keep using it...

Limited range
While it works as Intended, the range is limited. Other brands/models seem to have a better range. Also is a delay talking,. You need to press and hold the button for a second or two before talking otherwise you get cut off

works better than most handhelds
Bought this a few years ago and never had to use it until last week when my impeller quit on me. From the middle of the bay it sent and recieved signal from the tow boat company. The operator asked what type of VHF I was using and was amazed when I said it was a handheld. Apparently handhelds never reach far enough to their station and she was genuinly surprised. not pictured well is a disk-type clip on the back which easily attaches to a mount on my dash. I have left it in the elements for weeks and everytime I come back to the boat it turns right on. If you don't have a cabinet to install a conventional vhf, this handheld is a great option.

Takes the term "submersible" very seriously.
I bought this to replace an older floating model Uniden I bought a few years ago that decided to stop working. I purchased it on 9/21 and took it down to the dock. As I was climbing into my Zodiac, the clip popped off my belt and it went to the bottom, sinking immediately in about 10' of water. The water in Narragansett Bay is opaque that time of the year, so I considered it lost. Fast forward to 11/14 and I am getting some things I left behind at the dock. It was dead low tide. I look down at the now clear water and see the radio. I zip tied a fishing net to a boat hook and was able to reach down and scoop it up. To my amazement, it still had a charge, and more amazingly, it even transmitted and recieved! After letting it dry out a bit, it wouldn't change channels and I considered it toast. After letting it dry our for a week, it fired up and works perfectly. I still havent charged it since 9/21. Will it fail in the future due to this? Who knows, but the fact that it lived in 10' of salt water for almost two months is pretty amazing.

Full Featured VHF Marine Radio
The Uniden MHS75 is waterproof and submersible to 5 ft. as advertised. However they also advertise a floatable design which might lead you to believe the radio floats. It does not! Be sure to attach a short 2 inch section of pool noodle or similar float to the included wrist strap before clipping it to you belt. If it does fall into the water you will be able to retrieve it without diving to the bottom. The radio has great transmitting power, 5 watts or 1 watt switchable, and crystal clear reception. If you are a boater you should not leave the dock without one. The Quad watch feature makes the radio especially useful as you can monitor 4 frequencies at once. The VHF channel you are using, Ch.16 which is mandatory for boats underway, Ch. 9 another frequently used non commercial calling channel, and a weather alert channel so you won't miss a hazardous weather advisory. This leaves you free to pilot your boat safely without having to constantly fool with the radio. I purchased a 110v ac/12v dc adapter from amazon for a little over $2.00 w/500ma output and it fully charges the battery which is shipped uncharged in a little less than 4 hrs. Recharging after each use should be less than 2 hrs. This inexpensive accessory will allow you to charge the radio when you are not aboard your boat, or keep you radio charged if you don't have a 12v outlet on your boat. Fully charged the radio will transmit over 3 hrs. and monitor traffic for a week. The rechargeable battery also holds its charge with the radio turned off for a very long time. I have left this radio sitting unused on my bureau for months during the summer when it is just too hot to take the boat out and the battery indicator has never dropped below full. All of my other rechargeable batteries need an occasional charge to keep them full. Not this one. I am really impressed. This little waterproof handheld VHF marine radio is everything a recreational boater should need to boat safely. Happy Boating.
