Works really great as a hot compress - with a couple notes

I have only used this in the microwave, not the freezer, so I can't speak to how well it freezes but this works really great if you need a hot compress and don't want to have to deal with a wet towel. In my opinion this stays warm longer than a towel would. I only have two cautions: (1.) Be careful when microwaving it, as it can expand/pop in the microwave or get really hot. I recommend only microwaving it in short bursts of about 10-15 seconds and keep an eye on it. (2.) The material can "stick" to skin which can be uncomfortable, so I would suggest wrapping it in a thin towel/washcloth after you microwave it. I have not tried this in the freezer before but will update the review if I ever do.

Handy in those sudden Hotel emergencies - and for sudden accidents

I like these, and they have also been very useful for my Mom. Last November, 2015, while staying in a hotel, I had trouble with my ankle, and the top of my foot suddenly became all swollen. I stumbled over this TheraPearl in a Target, and decided to give it a try. I popped it into the hotel room's microwave for a few seconds, and applied. Wow, the heat was so helpful and soothing. The heat doesn't last more than about 20 minutes, max, so I just popped it back into microwave again. Then, just this month, my Mom needed cold on her swollen shoulder area, so I was able to give her one of these, thanks to Amazon for carrying them at least $3 cheaper. This time it was into the freezer. Again, it doesn't hold extreme temperature varients for long, but long enough to get the relief needed for a short time, an escape from the discomfort and pain. But it is the size, which seems just right for shoulder area, and foot, which make them so handy and indispensable in so many situations. Even just getting some body coolness in triple digit heat ! And my Mom and I both feel safe enough using them that we have fallen asleep with them on us, although the reviews that mention leaking are causing me to rethink that. I am going to order another one, from Amazon, because being able to rotate, whether microwave or freezer, is the ideal way to do it. Update : 8 / 20 / 16. Unbelievable. I stubbed my little toe on a box I'm packing and broke it ! I've got to say, so happy I had two of these in the freezer. Yes, ice cubes are great too, but no time to get that set up when you're in agony and screaming. I could just grab this, hobble to bed, and use. My doctor says those outside toes get broke all the time, because they are on the outside, vulnerable, alone, not nice and cozy between other friendly toes. It happened on weekend, and I read about it online, and following online instructions I Buddy Taped it, elevated, and iced with TheraPearl. Man, oh man. I will never be able to go comfortably in my socked feet again. Haunted by the painful memory. :-( ???? ????

Loving this product!!!!!!!

I have CP and noticed that I was experiencing stiffness, swelling, and pressure in my left knee. NSAIDS & topical pain creme help, but not completely, and they are not safe for long term use or in large quantities. My sister-in-law has these in her freezer as she is an avid exerciser and runner, so I tried one on a whim when I was there, and was very pleased with the results. The beads hold the cold in well and conform very well to wherever you want to use them, with or without a strap (which is an option). I haven't tried them in the microwave, but I fully intend to. Already I have noticed a marked improvement, yes, the stiffness is still there and to some degree always will be, but for the first time in two weeks, I haven't felt the godawful pressure which made me feel as if I was going to tear something or pop something out of place. Also, the swelling is gone!!!! It's truly amazing what 20 minute intervals a couple of times a day have done for my overall well being. I bought two, because my mom, who is in her 70s is prone to getting sick and when she runs fevers, she uses Ziplock bags of ice which melt quickly and sometimes leak. When I'm not using them, for myself, she can use them. They are super easy to clean and only take about 4 hours to refreeze. The beads change colors so you know when they are properly cooled or heated. This was a good deal too!!!!! Not at all expensive and thanks to the Amazon coupon I applied, I got them for a great price. Will definately buy again and recommend to other friends and family members.

Part of one's life kit

There has been at least one reusable hot pack in my home for over twenty years, and the TheraPearl pack is the best of all that I have used. I purchased two recently (one, "just in case"), after the pack that I had used for nearly ten years finally wore out. The heat provided by this pack is more uniform than that with other packs that I had previously used, and the pack stays suitably hot or warm for longer than the others. It can take some time to determine how long one needs to keep the pack in the microwave oven, and for how long, to achieve the desired level and duration of heat. Of course, this will vary from one oven to another. Wrapped with a damp washcloth, the pack is great for a hot compress over the eyelids (which needs to be applied for a full ten minutes, at a just-bearable temperature). It has also served well to apply heat to a tired muscle in the back or leg. One situation to avoid is overheating the pack, to the point that it inflates and the plastic stretches. This will eventually lead to thinning and rupture of the pack. With that caveat, highly recommended.

Decent cooling but poor construction

Effective cooling, but not great construction. Big advantage over, say, a bag of peas is three fold: the speed at which it cools down; the length of time it remains cold; and it’s longevity between having to buy new ones. Very good at the first two, not great at the last. I’ve bought two of these in the last 3 years, both developed a small tear at the seam through which the “pearls” leaked. Great for a short term buy, but certainly not a long term investment, and on that basis - is it much better than a bags of peas?

AH ! RELIEF AT LONG LAST

This review is my own private opinion of the TheraPearl Sports Pack, Reusable Hot & Cold Therapy Pack with Gel Beads. Unfortunately I have damaged my neck and only have a 10% movement. My GP gave me Diazepam 2mg tabs to be taken 3 times a day but due to having to take other medication the sided affects are so bad I can't put up with it. I put the gel pad in the microwave for 35 seconds and then wrapped it in a thin towel and put it on my neck OH what a lovely feeling left it there for 10 minutes. the pad certainly helped to ease the pain so repeated it all over again. Whilst it did not release my neck it certainly helped to ease the pain, will keep on doing it this way at least 3 or 4 times a day until I have to see the consultant in the next 2weeks. YES I thoroughly recommend the TheraPearl Sports Pack, Reusable Hot & Cold Therapy Pack with Gel Beads.

Good for pain relief

I already have one of these packs (that is just for putting in the freezer for when you need to put ice on an injury) & decided that I could do with another. This new version is even better than my original because you can put it in the freezer or you can heat it in the microwave to use as a warm/hot pack too. They stay mailable when frozen so that it moulds around your body sharp to gain full contact. Also, it doesn’t become all wet on the outside of it like a bag of frozen peas!

Return window closed

This was a useful product for my broken wrist but after 2 months it has split - little blue balls all over the place.. I have no redress as my return window has closed and there is no direct communication. I shall have to go back to using bags of frozen peas! Thus one star.

Quality is touch and go

Had one of these for a while, decided to get a second one so there's always one ready to go from the freezer. Unfortunately, the new one turned up with a hole in so little pearls started to escape. Replacement arranged with customer services but am a little wary how long they'll both last considering.
