Squeeze Play...
Boy, from these reviews, people are very passionate about their lemon squeezers. This is my second Amco Enameled Aluminum Lemon Squeezer (or Lemon Thingy as it is called by those of us whose memories have been addled by time, fate and circumstance). My first Lemon Thingy was pilfered by a friend in retaliation for the theft of a potato peeler, so obviously it is a very good juicer or I would have tried a new one, but why tempt fate? This is a darn good lemon squeezer and I will defend it against all nay-sayers. It's easy to use, the juice comes squooshing out quite nicely, and I have suffered no lemon-related injuries as a result of using the apparatus. One reviewer complained that the lemon thingy was not dishwasher safe. It never occured to me that a lemon squeezer required such thorough cleansing. I just rinse mine under cold water and throw it back in the drawer. Certainly my housekeeping skills would make Martha Stewart take the gaspipe, but who scrubs the lemon juicer? Another reviewer rather ominously foresees the day when the pin holding the two sides together will break. Well, yeah, eventually. But maybe we'll all be dead by then, look at the bright side. Another saves her lemon squoosher for lemons and has a separate (green) one devoted especially to limes. Lord I admire that kind of organization. I'm always surprised that I remembered to get lemons or limes in the first place, let alone have segregated squeezing apparati for them. And of course, I am, admittedly, a wildcard when it comes to citrus. If I were to find an orange small enough, I'd squoosh it in the lemon thingy too. Without hesitation. Yeah, I'm like that. Don't mess with me. No telling what will happen.

Great -- when used correctly!
All these detailed reviews were very helpful in my decision to get this juicer, as I had a good idea of what to expect. This would be a five-star review if not for the enamel that many others have mentioned. Brand-new, it was already worn away in a few very tiny spots. I just plan to wash it thoroughly by hand every time. I'm juicing Meyer lemons, which have a much thinner skin than traditional lemons. As such, on a reamer the lemon tends to just squish all over the place. This squeezer solves the problem entirely. I got the orange sized one because Meyer lemons can also grow bigger than most lemons. However, on my first test I was using small-to-medium-sized lemons. I got a complete squeeze out of each lemon half, and a full cup of juice from the five smallish lemons. At first I was hand-squeezing the remaining rind, but all I got was seeds and an insignificant few more drops of juice. The rinds did not split and there was little to no splatter or other mess. I definitely agree, as others have said, that people having problems using this aren't using it correctly. The card that comes with it shows a little diagram of how to put the citrus half inside. It does intuitively feel like the half should be cut side up, but alas no. If you place the half cut side down, you should get as good of a result as I did. A minor point: I do like my citrus juice with more pulp, but I don't know if that's an issue with the squeezer or the lemon. I bought this for $9 and it's more than worth it, especially since I'm disabled and don't have much energy to do this stuff. If you have arthritis or other problems with squeezing your hand, you might not be able to achieve the last few centimeters, but it is otherwise good for reducing the effort needed to make delicious juice and lemonade!

Save money and buy a stainless steel version
This aluminum lemon squeezer broke on my second use. I gave my beloved stainless steel lemon squeezer purchased two years ago at Sur La Table to my mother so I thought I try a cheaper one from Amazon. This Amco product was highly reviewed and popular so I gave it a chance. What a disappointment. First, the squeezer is light due to being made of aluminum but not in a good away. It felt like a toy vs a handy cooking tool you can count on for years. But I tried to reserve judgment in the face of my girlfriend immediately criticizing my choice. Second, the yellow "paint" was horrible. Unlike the one I bought from Sur La Table, the paint was uneven and you could even see the base color coming through even when it was new! I was very disappointed but I figured just use the damn thing. What am I going to do, go through the trouble to return a $10 item? No, I thought. But I was left with no choice when it broke on my second use. I didn't even squeeze that hard. I couldn't believe it. So my advice to all of my fellow Amazon loving, regular lemon squeezers: 1. Don't wast money on any cheap aluminum squeezers, whether it's Amco or another manufacturer. I don't think aluminum or anything that has plastic components are fit for squeezing mechanisms. Spend extra few bucks on a stainless steel kind from a reputable manufacturer. Otherwise, you will end up spending more time pissed off and possibly writing a review to help others not buy a "lemon." Not worth all of the grief for a $10 purchase. 2. Most lemon squeezers are too small to handle large lemons, e.g. the kind you get from Costco. I would purchase a stainless steel orange squeezer. They are normally too small to handle large oranges but perfect for large lemons. This is my first review after so many years of relying on other reviewers on Amazon. Someone pointed out that the best way to thank others for their reviews is to write reviews that could be helpful to others. So here is my first effort in paying it forward. PS: I am going to post a picture of my broken squeezer. Figure pictures are worth a thousand words. PPS: Amazon was fantastic with my request to return. They just refunded my money without me having to return it. I love Amazon! Tony

Product is just as shown. I have not used it yet (it's actually a gift), but I am slightly concerned about whether there's enough enamel around the holes that the juice would flow through.

Not as efficient as the lemon and lime squeezers
When compared to the same brand oflemon squeezer andlime squeezer this may seem slightly disappointing and not quite as efficient a tool. It's a little harder to squeeze as although the cup is bigger, the handles are the same length as for the lemon and lime squeezers. Also, as one reviewer noted, it does not appear to fully compress the orange when the handles are closed; it may work better with bigger oranges than I have been using, but given my experience of trying small oranges in the lemon squeezer, some juice would probably squirt out of the sides with big oranges. Certainly it does not extract every last drop, but definitely the majority. Other reviewers may well be noticing that a considerable amount of the flesh remains in the squeezed half. This does not necessarily mean that the juice is not being extracted. With other juicers such as thePhilips Citrus Press , which I also own, although the skin may be stripped relatively clean of flesh, a large amount of the flesh will end up over the juicer itself and some as "chewy bits" in the juice. The juice extracted by this tool is quite "clean" in that respect which may partly account for a lower volume. I didn't concur with those reviews stating that only half of the juice is obtained. I estimated that hand squeezing afterwards probably only gave another 10-15% extra at most on top of what was extracted by the tool. But to be sure I performed an experiment, cutting two oranges in half, juicing one half from each (to average out any differences in yield between the two fruit) with this squeezer, and one half from each with my Philips. The latter machine yielded 90ml of fairly cloudy juice with bits. This hand tool gave 60ml of clearer juice; putting the spent halves on the Philips yielded a further 20ml of cloudy juice. So it gives about two-thirds as much as the machine, but you have to take into account the different pulp content of the resultant juice. If I want to juice a large number of oranges for juice for drinking, I would get out my Philips, entailing getting it out of the back of the cupboard, finding worktop space to plonk it, unravelling cable, plugging in, squeezing, having to dispense of a large amount of wet pulp and pips which get all over your hands and dribble juice everywhere when you take the rotating squeezer part out to remove the jug, having to wash off all the remaining pulp, dry thoroughly, wrap up cable, return to the back of the cupboard. However if I want to squeeze just a half or one orange for cooking or for cocktails (where clearer juice is often desirable) I would rather use this - squeeze, dispense orange half in one piece, wipe clean, done.

An amazingly effective piece of kit
I concur with the other reviews. This is an amazingly effective piece of kit. Cut a lime in half, place the cut side down in the cup, squeeze the handles and Bob's your uncle. Effortless juice extraction, and the skin, flesh and pips can be removed in one piece for discarding. No mess all over your hands, no mopping up of fleshy bits and seeds, and consequently so easy to clean afterwards. I would suggest though that there is no real need to get this particular squeezer, but to get thesame brand of lemon squeezer instead. I wondered if the relative size and curvature of the cup might make this smaller squeezer more efficient with the smaller fruit. I performed an experiment, cutting two limes in half and using one half of each (to average out any difference in yield between the two fruit) with this squeezer and one half of each with the lemon squeezer. The amount given by the lemon squeezer was in fact slightly more that yielded by this squeezer. So within experimental error the lemon squeezer is certainly not any worse at squeezing limes. The other advantage of using the lemon squeezer with the limes is that there is less chance of juice squirting out of the sides of the cup, as occasionally happens. So with hindsight I would probably have only bought the lemon squeezer rather than both. Having said that, if you are squeezing a number of both limes and lemons on the same occasion, for example when making a number of cocktails, it's nice to have both. Note that there is also anorange squeezer of the same make .

Effortless juice extraction, and the skin, flesh and pips can be removed in one piece for discarding. No mess all over your hands, no mopping up of fleshy bits and seeds, and consequently so easy to clean afterwards. This works with limes too - there is possibly no real need to get both this andthe same brand of lime squeezer unless the relative size were to make the specific lime squeezer more efficient with limes (at the time of writing I have one of the latter on order too so have not yet been able to make comparison). I was surprised by how much juice this device, with one simple squeeze, forced out of a fairly desiccated old lime which had been hanging around in the fruit basket for some while. Previously it would have been a major undertaking to get half that amount out. The cup is just big enough to get smaller orange halves into too, though there is a tendency for a bit of juice to spray out of the sides. It doesn't seem to be quite so efficient with oranges in the amount of juice extracted. It's notable that some reviewers ofthe same brand of orange squeezer say that that product is not very efficient, though for me it's not nearly so bad as those reviews imply. Given how effective this lemon squeezer is with lemons and limes, it may be a property of the oranges themselves rather than the equipment per se. You'll wonder how you ever survived without this.
