Fun Yard Game
When it came time to replace our old croquet set, I with the well known Franklin brand. The wood is a bit thin, pretty light weight. The mallets are tall enough for adults to use without being bent halfway over (and much cheaper than buying the longer mallets). We had no issues with splinters, all of the parts are sanded smooth. The balls are lightweight resin, they are not clay. They do show some signs of wear after being smashed around the yard, which is to be expect. Once the mallet heads are put on, do not expect to remove them for storage. The threads will strip out, but they all fit together just fine. We keep the mallets assembled and stored standing, they don't take up that much space. We use the handy bag to store the other pieces of the set. A wide age range of kids have played with the set a few times with no damage yet. Could they be sturdier, sure, but having priced multiple sets, the quality seems on par for the price point. So I feel it was a good purchase and it made for some fun leisure time in the yard.

Good product ...poor assembly instructions
Quality product but assembly instructions are presented poorly with no picture showing the final product. Had to redo assembly a few times to get it right as the graphics in instructions are not clear enough to understand what needs to be done when. After assembly completed, often a mallet and some balls will fall out of the carrier when moving it due to design defects.

Family fun
This is a great set, lots of fun, sturdy and easy to use. The only downfall is that one you've put the set together the mallets cannot fit into the storage bag unless you take them apart again.

carrying case is too small
The set itself is satisfactory -- a little rough in spots and a little difficult to screw the heads on. However, the main problem is that once the mallets are assembled, the set will not fit into the carrying case. I will keep them and try to find a larger bag to store them in. It is unfortunate since a few inches extra on the length of the bag would have prevented this problem.

Great Game - not so great product.
I am going to review this for the product not the game itself. (we are having an EXTREMELY fun time using this for the game as a family and I think everyone should own a croquet set) Now this product - first - as everyone seems to be saying - the first time I swung at a ball - the white pieces were flying. We still play with the wood - but you know this is chipping up the balls. I grew up with a set that had rubber ends and was rather sad to see our $30 new toy (which to me as a single mother is not cheap) looking like it had been used and abused for years. I take pride in the things we own and this is not a happy situation. If I had not been playing the game with my kids - I am sure someone would have gotten a lecture on treating the toys with respect. Never would I have assumed it could break with the lightest of hits. Now the bag - it comes with a case. That's nice. But what would be really nice is if everything fit into the bag while assembled. If you put the ends on the mallets they no longer fit into the case. I do not want my kids assembling them and taking them apart each time. That would be a nightmare and strip the wood in no time. So we leave one end unzipped and they stick out the top like a golf bag. We are having a GREAT time playing this. At least 2-4 times a day each day this week! It is spring and this is a perfect game to get us outside together and we have something to do in our suburban smaller sized yard. However... this product is not great. I really wanted it to be.

mallets great, balls not so much!
After using this set at least 3 times a week so far this summer (about 48 games, maybe more), I declare without a doubt these are some of the most solid, well-made mallets you will find. And the length of the handle is perfect for adults and teenagers. My parents bought a cheaper set and their too short mallets starting breaking within 7 uses of the croquet set (the balls are well-made though). The mallets in this set I am reviewing are made of hardwood, not pine. ONE BIG CON: Last week, two of the balls starting developing cracks in them, and one of them was mine...I smacked it really hard and the whole ball exploded into a hundred clay pieces (inside balls are hard packed clay material). The other ball is distorted and looks like an egg...probably ready to crack any minute. 4 of the balls are still fine at this point, but lots of dents in them. Finding decently priced replacement croquet balls is not easy I discovered, so we are using the balls from my parents' set (since they can't use the mallets, it's a good arrangement).

Great Fun and Good Quality
This was a great family gift and is a favorite of our kids during warmer months. We usually bring this along on family campouts, as well. The set includes: Six wood mallets with a chestnut (dark wood) finish Six matching colored balls to match Two 18” colorful wooden stakes Nine steel wickets A carry bag The bag makes it easy to store and transport, but admittedly, it is the weakest link of the package. The balls, mallets, stakes, and wickets have all withstood lots of abuse and show little sign of wear. I purchased the Intermediate Set, but the classic set comes with larger mallets, longer stakes, and bent wooden wickets. I'm average height and our youngest player is 6 year old and the mallets are comfortable for both of us and everyone in between. I don't think you can go wrong with this set.

We shall see how durable
Had to add stiffening gussets. Cart is rickety. Screw pre drills were too big for screws supplied. Had to use bigger screws. Good thing I’m a wood worker BUT the design and SOLID wickets are great!

Not as advertised and not as high quality as expected.
I like the wickets. They are solid and not the cheap wire jobbies that come with inexpensive sets. That said, I am very unhappy overall: 1) The mallet and mallet shaft hardware is not brass as advertised. It is pot metal or steel with a cheap antique brass finish. Less expensive sets come with solid brass hardware similar to that on good two-piece pool cues. 2) The finish on the mallets and shafts is not fine or beautiful (as advertised) at all. The ends of the mallets are rough cut, unsanded, have a thin finish overall and they all came with many imperfections, dings and even white marks on them. Select hardwood was not used and knot holes are unfilled and overall the finish is poor. I am speaking from the perspective of a furniture restorer and finisher. 3) One of the reasons I upgraded from another set was to get the caddie bag with wheels but the wheel assembly is made of plastic and so thin and unstable that it flexes and will most assuredly break with regular use. 4) While Franklin includes many nylon bags to package and protect the balls, wickets, shafts and mallets separately within the caddy bag, I had to play around with them to figure out how to get it all to mount in the bag securely as no packing instructions are included. I also found that unless you find the exact order in which to pack the contents, it unbalances the bag, the wheel assembly flexes due to its cheapness and the bag falls over. This damages the nylon bag and will lead to abrasion which in turn will lead to tears in the caddy bag. I will be returning the set. I am willing to pay more to get a better set but frankly, you can get better sets for less, just without the wheeled caddy bag.

Bad Quality
Very bad quality do not buy. Broke while playing the first round itself. Expected a better product especially since it was from Franklin.

Great set for Family / Recreational Game
This review is for Franklin Sports Classic Set: Franklin Sports makes 4 croquet sets: Intermediate, Advanced, Classic and Expert. There is Vintage version which was not available on Amazon while purchasing this set in Canada. Initially I purchased Intermediate set and was disappointed with quality and was returned. Advanced and Classic sets pretty much look similar and I couldn't figure out differences on Internet research. I purchased Classic and Expert set and happy with both of them in initial look and feel. ( I haven't played any game since its still winter here). Compared to Intermediate set, The classic set comes with larger mallets (9"x2"), longer shafts (29.5"), longer wickets (24") and bent wire wickets. Wood quality is far better than Intermediate set. I don't think you can go wrong with "Classic"set. If you want to significantly step up your game in terms of quality and user experience, consider much expensive " Expert" set. Refer to my review on that set. I purchased Classic set as back up in case if we have 4-5 families playing and adults can play with Expert set and kids can play with lighter Classic set. In summary, my recommendation is skip Intermediate Set. Get Classic or Advanced set for family/recreational play. If you wish to spend more, get Expert set.

This is the first negative review I have ever written on ANY of my many online purchases. It is a TERRIBLE set. I had an $80 set that I bought that lasted the summer but then started to wear and break as my family used it every day so I decided to spend the money and get a "good set" to last as my family really took a liking to the game. Although the set looks like the quality is good, and most of it is, the handle connections to the metal threads on the mallet handle are terrible!! 3 of them broke right out of the handles the first day and not from any sort of abuse at all! My daughter's broke first and then 2 more after the first day of use. I can say the rest of the set was very high quality but the mallets are garbage, which is the most important part of the set!! Very disappointed to say the least. I was very excited to use these and broke them out at a family function and it was quite embarrassing.
