Update 3/21/17: The seller has changed the image to show the full mount and improved the item description. You can now easily tell that this will install through your boat (or whatever mounting surface). I am upgrading to a 4 star rating. Original Review 8/26/15: The picture does NOT accurately show the mount. This does NOT mount on the surface. There is a large cylinder that comes out the bottom of the mount. This requires drilling a ~1.25" hole (in addition to the 4 mounting rivet holes). There is not a lot of lip on the outside of this to make a seal, only about 1/4". See attached image. I am not comfortable installing this on my sit-on-top kayak. This will inevitably leak to the *interior* of my boat. Also, the item description says: "Scotty's Flush mount baitcaster/spinning rod holder provides an adjustable surface-mounted cradle...." Which implies this is a surface mount.... Nowhere does is say or show that you will have to drill a large hole in your boat. Other than that... this looks like a great mount, If you want to cut a large hole in your boat.. Thus why I am still giving 3 stars. Please fix the item image and description. I will be returning this for one that actually mounts on the surface. Thank goodness for same-day shipping, or I would not get to have a rod holder on this weekend's fishing trip. (need 1 day to install and glue to dry) M

Very easy to install and operate

Very easy to install and operate. One thing to note is you will have to drill a fairly large hole (~1.25") to install. If you don't want to do that, they have other options that are not flush mount so you only need to drill the 4 small mounting holes. It does NOT include the screws/bolts/rivets to secure. When mounting, make sure you look at the base and take note of the "inboard" arrow and point it towards the middle of the boat/kayak/etc, this is because of the way you rotate the rod holder. The rod holder is removable so if you don't mount the base correctly, the top piece will fall out during operation. In order to change the direction of the rod holder you simply pull up on it, rotate, and drop back down. You can also adjust the angle by unscrewing the knob on the right hand side and then tightening back up on the desired angle. One last thing to note, I actually looked at some of the other rod holder mount options at a brick and mortar store to get an idea of the quality of build. The Scotty brand was hands down the most sturdy feeling and I actually ended up picking this particular model because it was the smallest. Some other mounts are 2 to 3 times the size of this one, so if you want to keep your rod mount more compact, this is your best bet.

Excellent Quality but One Major Design Flaw

Bought 3 and mounted them on my Kayak. I also bought the extenders to give it more height. Pros: 1. Sturdy. It's very well made and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't last a lifetime. 2. Adjustable. I like that I can set it to any angle and that I can rotate it. 3. Portable. I like that I can just take the holder out of the base when I load and unload the kayak from my car. Cons: 1. My baitcasting reels did not fit well at all (took off one star - and that's being generous!) - see the picture. I never use the rubber strap to secure the rod but there was no way I could've used it with my rod sticking out like that. The rod never fell out but it would rock back and forth a bit. There was no way I was going to continue to use it like this. The Fix: I used a table router with a straight bit to carve out one of the sides. With a little bit of sanding, now it fits perfectly. (See the picture). It took me 10 minutes each. The material is strong so it doesn't compromise the structure one bit.

Great Holder, do your research... ignore the bad reviews!

This is a great rod holder! All of the negative reviews are for the mysterious "not what was pictured" comments. Folks, this is a flush mount... it sits flush with your kayak (you can't see the shaft when it's mounted which is probably why it's not pictured). It just so happens that you will need to drill a little 1 3/8" hole for the shaft of the mount to go into (big deal :P). Is this a bad thing? No! This allows you to purchase any other Scotty product and utilize the same mount... want a rocket launcher? great, uses the same mount.... want an extender? great throw it on this mount... you get the jist. To attach I just used 3/16" pop-rivets, you can find these at many marine/water sport websites BUT, they are way overpriced! I got a box of 250 rivets for 15.99 at Speedway Motors so... about $0.07/rivet. The kayak sites will charge you about $0.50/rivet... no thanks! Overall, very satisfied with this product. Will probably end up getting another one, or two...

Helped me save some money on a couple of fishing kayak conversions

I used these as parts for conversions of two Hydros kayaks into fishing models and they fit and seal as well as the ones installed on the fishing model. They are actually better quality than what comes standard on the Hydros fishing model kayak. I did have to purchase and use the Scotty extensions to get them to the proper height. To finish the project both were fitted with two flush mount rear rod holders. With just a little work and a few dollars in parts I was able to convert two standard model Hydros kayaks to the same (better) specifications as their fishing models at about half the total cost as the Hydros fishing models. The only difference when complete is the color of the kayaks and I personally like the blue color better anyway. These are rod holders at a very affordable price.

Fishing made easy!!

Another great product from Scotty!!! Really durable, super easy to use, and you can fit all kinds of different rods in there! As you see I mounted mine with the track adapter to the side of my kayak. Great for easy grab and go and for trolling! The only small issue is that in order to change the angle, you have to back off the nut very far because of the locking teeth! I’ve seen some applications where people use slip discs for easier movement! Maybe that could be an up sell for people who view or purchase this item!

Good quality

I mounted the rod holders on a rail platform and they look great and are easy to use. The ability to be able to rotate as well as adjust the vertical angle (rod tip height) are great features that provides you with the flexibility to accommodate more rods. They appear to be make very well and durable.

Great Canadian made quality product. But there are other things to consider. In my situation, I would have benefited from a surface mount rather than a flush mount. It may interfere with my foot rest. Also, my Ripple Kayak has a large cockpit so I also ordered an extension arm because of the long reach from a sitting position to the holder. One more thing to consider, the flush and surface mounts are available with locks as some people here have lost their rod holders when capsizing. Good luck

Scotty quality as always

This product is one I have used for years and works very well. This time I used it in the ice shack where I have already two others on the seats next to the holes in the floor.
