This charger does not have a diode in it. Without a diode, when there is no light shinning on the panel, the battery will back feed and discharge the battery. You have two choices, install a diode in line on the positive lead with the banded end towards the plug end or disconnect the charger once there is no sun. The charger works as advertised and is great to keep up a fully charged battery. If you have a newer vehicle, they have a continuous battery discharge from things such as alarms, clocks and other things. This charger may or may not put out enough amperage to produce more charging power than is removed by the vehicle. On an older vehicle, there are far fewer things that draw current from the battery with the vehicle off, so the charger will work to keep your battery charged. This is not a battery charger, it a maintainer for a fully charged battery, as designed. If you have a newer vehicle, I'd get a 5 watt or 10 watt panel and a charge controller so the higher output from a larger panel will not overcharge the battery. This panel is also great if camping, ect. for the times you are using a battery to power a devise. It will help the battery keep up it's voltage longer. Overall, it's a great deal if you install a diode. The diode costs less than one dollar. Go to Radio Shack and let them know what the diode is for and they will get you the right part, otherwise, disconnect the panel at dusk. Also, don't position the panel so shadows fall on it. It's not as critical with this type of panel as it is with some others.

Excellent, well made. Save me from charging battery every two weeks!

Using this for this first on our gas hog that is rarely used. Mostly the SUV sits in the shade, so i am hoping the windshield area will get enough sun, if not will have to move the panel. Comes with clamps and an adapter for the cigarette lighter. My cigarette lighter is functional so i just used the adapter. But can use the clamps if need be. This is a trickle charger, just made for topping off. I made sure my battery had a full charge then plugged this in. The package also says its moisture resistant, great feature as our stored cars always get some kind of rain or wetness. easy setup. No suction cups for attaching to windshield only some kind of screws. Rather not screw it into my headliner. Found a way to prop it up on top of my sun shades. My only issue is that the packaging inside the main box where the panel sits, is kept together by large staples. i would recommend fully opening and taking apart the packaging. I cut my hands and punctured my thumb several times trying to remove panel. Other issue is that this lower priced model does not come with a gauge to let you know its actively charging. The next model up, has it. I also use the Schumacher battery jump starter/maintainer that runs off electric/plug. Excellent product, used that so many times, well worth the money. WM had some for about $30.00. Has modes for fast charge, jump, and trickle. Perfect for the street parker or constant traveler!

I love that I no longer need to be plugged in anywhere to keep my rv battery charged and maintained! I am a young adult female and it was more than easy to hook up the battery, run it through the openings of my RV and set it in one of my interior windows. It took a few days to charge the dead battery but now it works perfectly again! Thank you for making this invention, it's helped me enjoy my van features more :)

Lasted 2 &1/2 years (1 &1/2 years past the end of the warranty)

I purchased this unit from Amazon in January of 2019 to keep my ridding lawn tractor's battery charged. While my meter said it was still outputting over 20vdc with no load it wouldn't charge my battery anymore (current battery is less than a year old). I replaced this solar panel with the SP-400 and the Schumacher SPC-7A Charge Controller and the battery immediately started charging. The Internet says solar cells should be good for 20-25 years so 2.5 years is a little disappointing. Hopefully the replacement unit will last longer. While it was functioning properly I didn't have to hook a wired charger to my tractor's battery and wait for it to charge up during those times in the winter when grass cutting is at a minimum.

I live in Wyoming where the winters can be brutal, especially when it gets down to - 40 and lower. My 2006 Chevrolet Silverado is left partially out in the open where it mostly gets the full brunt of the cold. I learned early when I move here that to have a battery maintainer in this harsh environment is crucial. For the last 12 years, I depended on my truck for the 32 mile trips to get supplies for my ranch. I have never had battery problems since I connected this battery tender, and the battery is the original equipment that came with the truck. Just in case, I bought an extra maintainer but never had to use it. The bad thing is, and a word of caution, however. The wires are thin and somewhat delicate, so be careful how you move it around as the wires could easily break inside and it would be deemed useless especially in winter. The good thing is it is amorphous, which means this item does not need full sun to be effective, all it needs is a good day if only it is cloudy and overcast, it will still do the job. A hint . . . before you connect the solar maintainer, be sure the battery is in good condition and to give the battery a full charge to be the most dependable as this is NOT a charger, but a voltage maintainer.

works great but don't buy their solar controller

I bought this to charge my generator battery. Panel works well but the solar charger controller is a waste of money. After dealing with Schumacher about it, I bought a different brand. By this time my Amazon warranty ran out, so I'm stuck with it.

This thing has saved me from a lot of frustration. I have it wired to the battery in a truck that was always ending up with a dead battery because it wasn't getting used often enough. Since I installed this I've never had trouble with a discharged battery. I don't have it wired to a switch so have to remember to unplug it before I start the truck and plug it back in when I'm done. That connection is situated right beside the drivers side seat so it isn't a problem to get at.

Great Product, No charge controller!

Doesn’t come with charge controller! Just the panel and some wires. Reccomend longer wires as well.
