Not Quite a Toy, Not Quite a Medical Device
Learning Resources Stethoscope / B00004WKU2 When my heart starting skipping beats unexpectedly due, apparently, to chronic stress, I decided I needed a stethoscope on hand for quick assessments of my heart beat during my palpitation periods. Amazon is my standby in these emergencies and, among the expensive "med student" options, there was this Learning Resources toy. The results, in my opinion, are mixed. First, this is not the most sensitive of stethoscopes. The heart beat is softer than more expensive stethoscopes, probably to lessen potential damage to a child's eardrums if the stethoscope is mishandled. (Seriously, that would be a huge concern of mine before handing this toy over to a child. Hearing loss is permanent and should not be flirted with.) The stethoscope realistically picks up every errant movement or flutter of clothing, so the user must hold very, very still in order to get a decent read on the already soft-sounding heart rate. Second, as others have noted, the hearing pieces on this stethoscope HURT. I can't leave the stethoscope in my ears for more than a minute or so. The hearing pieces are fairly big (I'd estimate larger than a small child's ear could comfortably accommodate, but I can't say with certainty), very hard, and press inwards strongly, and at an uncomfortable angle. Attempts to "stretch" the metal out a bit have failed so far. Bottom line, though, is that this stethoscope does work for what I purchased it for, even if it doesn't work as well or as painlessly as I'd like. I can monitor my heart during periods of bad heart activity, although I dislike that the stethoscope is too painful to use for frequent "spot checks". I can't imagine that this would be a particularly sturdy toy - if I have to keep the chewy rubber away from inquisitive cats, I'd have to think that small teeth could so just as much, if not more, damage. Although I suppose the majority of children don't chew on their toys past age 5, a younger brother or sister could wreak a goodly amount of havoc on this toy. ~ Ana Mardoll

yes i got this for me...
yes i am an adult. so it's a weensy bit tight on me (surprised right. lol) but i didn't have the money on hand for the nearly $100 one that's out there and there are a few things i Needed something like this for. (won't bore you with details other than to say i have older cats and also some issues of my own i want to keep on top of) for what i paid, i got better than i honestly expected from a "kid's toy". sure it's not professional grade but i can hear what i need to pretty easy. i was able to tell one of my "girls" needed to go to the vet for a watery sound in her left lung with no trouble. (by the way, thank you to the seller for that... she's my oldest cat and it may have just saved her life!) now i will not tell you that this should be used Instead of a doctor visit or even a "real" stethoscope. but it's a good and useful product and works. not perfectly, but pretty good for what you pay. so yes, i say get this for your little ones. not only is it the perfect gift for your doctors/nurses-to-be but it will help make actual visits less scary for them as well having had some personal hands on experience with some of the tools they'll encounter.

This is a REAL stethascope - great for play, and even for bringing with you to the dr. office!
We received a doctors dress up set as a gift - the set came with a plastic and very fake looking stethoscope that required batteries to operate the electronic heart beat sound. I don't know about you - but I hate toys that make electronic noises... especially when your body is making a heartbeat sound all day long :) This is a "real" stethoscope... you have to listen very carefully and position it just right to hear. That doesn't in any way detract from the play value of this toy for our two kids. The fact that it looks and feels just like their pediatrician makes it very exciting! This has been a very durable toy for us and I highly recommend it. We have also brought this to the doctors office with us, and the children use it on their dolls while the doctor checks their heart. It was a great calming force and distractor for us.

Perfect Stethoscope for My Little Doctor Enthusiast
I was unhappy with all the cheap doctor sets out there, and my 3 year old son was unimpressed by them. I have a lot of health issues, and have been hospitalized multiple times, so playing doctor is one of the ways my son deals with his anxieties and fears about it all. Its really given him a sense of empowerment to understand what hospitals are for and what doctors really do. So this Christmas I decided to make him a QUALITY doctor set, something that would help him learn and expand as opposed to a bunch of plastic dodads that would just take up space in the play area. This stethoscope was the absolute icing on the cake for his set. He use to pretend to listen to peoples heart with the pretend plastic one that came with his doctor costume, but now he can ACTUALLY listen to heartbeats thanks to this. He listens to EVERYONE that will let him (especially enjoys listening to mama's belly since baby brother is in there and due very soon.) Its worth every cent.

Great Stethoscope with Real Heartbeat
This is an excellent stethoscope. I saw other reviewers talking about how the ear pieces hurt and were uncomfortable, but myself and my 4-year-old did not have this problem at all. I've also seen other stethoscopes that say they play a prerecorded heartbeat when you put it up to anything, even inanimate objects like a table, but I tested this one and got nothing from things that weren't alive, and actually heard my son and I's real heartbeats. The stethoscope is well made, but sadly my 4-year-old has been on a destructive streak lately, and he damaged it beyond repair so we had to get rid of it. Still, this is not due to bad product design. When my son gets older and learns to respect his toys instead of destroying things, I may consider getting him another one. For now though, I won't reward his bad behavior.

Functioning stethoscope for little doctors!
My friends one year old spent most of the last 2 weeks in the hospital. Frequently being poked and prodded by nurses and doctors made him very unhappy, but he liked the stethoscopes so I bought him this one. I love the fact you can actually hear heartbeats with it!

My daughter loves this! Great value for money, well made as hard to break (she’s 3 and destructive!). You can actually hear your heart beat etc through it too!

The DR will see you now
Okay, so it's not a medically accurate product lets just get this obvious fact out of the way first off. It is a toy!! However, I brought this for my four-year-old as a Xmas gift as she loves to play Dr and her face was a picture when she realised she can (albeit a little faintly) hear the heartbeat of everyone who needed her 'care' .. Personally I think it's a fantastic little toy which works well enough to satisfy a small child. If you're looking for something to diagnose your heart condition then do keep on shopping. If you're looking for a cute toy that will work well enough and not blow off the child's ear drums when they decide to sing into it then this is perfect, it works and does the job to satisfy the imagination.,

Good product for the price
It’s great as a fun thing to use with my kids. The part that goes into your ear isn’t very soft so they can hurt a little when wearing them.

Good stethoscope
Bought this for my granddaughter, and she loves it. Thinks she is a doctor and it is great that you can hear a persons heart beat, would recommend
