Fun gift
This was a hit with my preschooler. Great way to introduce earth science!

Nice set of pieces and educational, but box and magnifying glass break easily
I gifted this and within one week, the box, holding the rocks, already got a crack in it from just falling off a short dresser. It left a hole in one of he squares, but we bought a larger storage box that's more durable to make up for it

Perfect for Homeschoolers and for Fun
I homeschool my fourth grader, and we've been studying rocks and minerals during science. We were discussing streak, lustre, hardness (and all that fun stuff), and my kid was bored. To death. I decided to get him a small rock and mineral kit to help bring all these terms to life because it seems most ten year old boys would be somewhat interested in rocks (or maybe not, thanks to Fort Nite). It came with fifteen varieties and a nice, durable plastic container to keep them organized. Some of the minerals like the quartz were rolled and polished, and I knew that going in because I asked on here before buying. I would've preferred them in their natural state so we could do more streak tests, but I couldn't find anything like that. So we were able to do streak and hardness tests on several of the samples, and he thought that was interesting. He also enjoyed using the magnifying glass to look at them closer. The little booklet had good info and was very handy. Did my seem alive and impassioned about rocks after this? Well, no. But it did bring things to life for him, and we will use them each year when we revisit rocks, minerals, plate tectonics, and such. I recently witnessed my college son studying the same terms in his required core science class, so it isn't a bad thing to know. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. If using for school, maybe make your own chart where you can record observations.

Really good
The negative reviews almost made me not getting this. The kid is 5 and it's into precious stones 'cause of minecraft (go figured it), he loved it. Item is just as described

Cute Beginner’s Set
My five year old is obsessed with rocks. This was a cute little first set for her to explore. However, the rocks are tiny and they don’t necessarily look like the photos in the booklet provided so they were a little difficult for a young kid to identify. I would not give this as a gift, but it is perfect for a young little scientist or in an addition to a classroom or homeschooling parent.

Confusing specimens
My older daughter and I are rock hounds and my little one has been jealous. We got her this little starter kit for her 4th birthday. It’s a good kit for the price. I mostly got it for the box to keep them from getting lost. My problem is with the specimens. Some of the rocks do not match what is in the booklet, specifically the blue quartz, rough aventurine, polished aventurine, and fluorite. Since this is an educational kit I think that’s pretty important. I get that there are natural variations, but in this case it should probably be pretty easy to identify which is which, and to be honest it took me a few minutes to figure out. My four year old doesn’t care, but I’ll probably replace a few of them to be more like the pics so she can easily identify them.

Awesome start for a little collector
My almost 3 year old loves collecting random rocks and my crystals just call to her. I found this to be a really cool way to introduce her to some basic gems and crystals and add some flare to her already pretty vast rock collection.

Stones don’t match what’s in the guide.
This is a cute set but we seem to be missing some? We used the guide to learn about each one as we added them to the case it came with, which is great to have. We easily identified the Pyrite and Desert Rose. We think we identified the quartz but it’s not the same shape as listed in the guide. We didn’t receive anything that looks like the Tiger’s Eye. There’s one reddish brown stone that doesn’t look like Tigers Eye or Red Jasper so not sure what it is. There’s a stone that might be Fluorite but it looks nothing like the pictures in the guide. Hematite is there along with Rose Quartz and Snowflake Obsidian. The guide lists Aventurine and we have what appears to be two variations of the green Aventurine. The set contains the Green Zebra Jasper but like I said above, the reddish brown stone doesn’t look like the Red Jasper in the guide so we don’t have the Red Jasper. We have the Calcite and Pumice. Then there’s a smooth blue stone that’s not listed in the guide and a rough light green stone that’s not listed in the guide. We thought that each stone would be listed in the guide but that’s not the case. The pictures in the listing and on the box clearly show 15 different stones but the guide only lists 12 stones. We received 15 stones but not sure what a few of them are since they don’t match up to the guide. It’s a cute starter set but we wish they were all listed so we could learn about them all!
