Simple Install - need to think about our watering plan
The irrigation controller is very simple to install. Rachio will also recycle your old controller. Post installation - you download an app and establish a WiFi connection, super easy. You are then promoted to populate sprinkler zone data and ultimately, decide on a watering plan/style. Identifying and naming sprinkler zones is easy. Using radio buttons you tell app what type of vegetation is there, if it’s flat/sloped/a hill, type of sprinkler head or drip line and lastly soil type. I wasn’t sure about the soil type, but checked it out. Don’t worry, you can always go back and reconfigure a zone’s data if need be. The only part of all of this that you really need to think about is the next part = establishing a watering plan/type. There are three types of ways to water: fixed schedule, controlled by you; a flexible schedule looked at once a month with watering adjusted by the system; or a daily flexible schedule that the system looks at every every day. It’s a little bit of a trust me here. I’m going to try the monthly flexible schedule and see how it works. As established, the watering times and pattern suggested by the system look about right… The proof will be in the actual results! You have the ability to adjust watering times under the flexible if you feel like it. I’ll come back after a few months of using the Rachio 3 system and provide an update.

Excellent product, but not for everyone
I debated for a long time before purchasing this product due to the mix of very strong reviews — both positive and negative. After using this unit for about 2 weeks, and experiencing a lot of weather in the North TX area, I’m writing to speak to both sides and offer my observations in hopes that it will help others who find themselves in the same dilemma that I did. First, let me say that this is an awesome product. Having worked in technology, and specifically software engineering and product development for 15-20 years, I truly appreciate the simplicity of the product. The entire setup process — from opening the box to having water running in our yard — lasted maybe 10-15 minutes max, and it was only that high because I spent about 5 minutes creating a label on our label maker to “mark” the zones on the outside of the unit. Some might call this overkill… my wife calls it particular… but nevertheless. Everything from the design, to engineering, to the magnetic cover, the software in the app (we use iOS)… it was simple and the experience was like opening an Apple product and having it “just work”. Second, let me speak to the setup options, since I think this is where most folks that write negative reviews get hung up. There are basically two paths to choose from, and there doesn’t really seem to be a middle ground. One path is to basically set it up as a “dumb controller” — meaning, think of what your parents probably had 20-30 years ago in their garage. You set a schedule, it is fixed, and it basically runs on certain days and times that you set. If this is your preference, then save your money and buy a different controller. There are way cheaper options on the market, and this product is going to be overkill for a schedule that simple. The other option, which is why I suspect most of you are probably interested or reading this in the first place, is what this system is really designed to do. You can set it up as a “smart controller” — meaning, you set a base schedule, along with some data points specific to your location, and these are fed into an algorithm, along with real-time weather information from your area, and it basically adjusts “on demand”. For example, if it rained more than a certain amount (you can set the threshold), or if rain is even expected in your area in the next 24 hours, it will skip a cycle. Or if it detects winds (again, you can set a threshold), it might adjust the time. Same thing for temperature below freezing, soil moisture, etc. There are a lot of options and you can customize which ones per zone… for example, one of our zones is a dedicated drip hose, so the wind alert doesn’t really matter but the soil moisture does. The neat thing is you can set multiple “schedules” and target different settings for each. The only thing to be aware of, is one of the settings is “time of day”… so if you have multiple schedules for the same day, and they are both set to “finish before sunrise”, for example, you might run into weird situations. We get around this by alternating days (or you can set a “fixed” time of day for one). Just a heads up for anyone running more complex schedules across zones. The “smart controller” setup (as I call it) is a little more work up front, and if you do it wrong, I can totally see how it will mess up your yard. However, it’s not all that difficult, and once it’s setup as intended, it’s totally worth the money. Based on our water usage, and the unpredictability of weather in the North TX area, I think this unit will pay for itself in a matter of a couple months. In the past 14 days alone, it has already saved us from running 4 different cycles for who knows how many hundreds of gallons each time. Again, this means that you actually have to do some work up front to make sure it is setup correctly. It does require a little bit of knowledge of your soil type and the ability not to over-estimate slopes. For example, just because your yard is graded (to get water away from your house) does not mean that the slope is “extreme”. All of the factors go into the algorithm… so if you get it wrong, that is not Rachio’s fault, even though it sounds like that is where most of the negative reviews stem from. It’s just like anything else with data… garbage in = garbage out. If you put good data in, then the results can be remarkable. The only downside, if there was one, is I could not get this to work with our existing rain sensor or HomeKit. The rain sensor threw false positives, and once I figured that out (thanks to Rachio alerting us "why" the system did not run), I just unplugged it and it's one less thing to have to worry about. For HomeKit, with a background in software engineering, I’ve looked into this technically and this appears to be an issue with Apple’s integration rather than Rachio. Practically, all this means is I cannot say “Hey Siri, turn on our sprinklers for 10 minutes". Would that be impressive to show off? Absolutely. But with the intelligence already built into Rachio's software, there’s a good chance I’ll never need to do anything manually ever again. In summary… this is an excellent product, but it is not for everyone. I do wish there was a review like this a few weeks back so I did not have to spend time second guessing myself before we purchased this product. All in all, this is a solid product, and I would highly recommend it… as long as you have some time to set it up correctly. I hope this helps! Justin

This sprinkler control box delivers.
This sprinkler control box is easy to install and use. Each of the different features and screens are laid out very simply cleanly and intuitively, and all responded like a charm. Very easy to use. Above all, I absolutely love the fact that everything is on my devices. Who wants to go into the garage every time they want to adjust the sprinklers, and how the heck are you supposed to check whether each of the sprinkler valves are working if you have to keep running back into the garage? The one drawback is that the installation pamphlet (and online videos) are both misleading and oversimplified. Much more specific detail should be included about which feature the tabs other than the valves are about. The Hunter sprinkler control box, has like five more wires. I’m not sure what they do, since the Rachio seems to take care of everything like a charm. But the point is, it was difficult to figure out why I didn’t have to install these five different wires on the Rachio. I would still recommend Rachio over the confusing clunky Hunter and other manual control boxes that aren’t even smart.

Easy and Excellent Upgrade
I only wish I purchased this sooner because it is a dramatic upgrade from the old standard RainBird controller. Installation was a breeze, took maybe 15 minutes, most of which was removing the old controller. The app intuitively guides you step-by step through configuration of the system including setting up each of your zones for specific location, sprinkler head, soil, and terrain conditions. Setting your schedule is also very quick and simple. The only hiccup I experienced was when trying to set the start time for a schedule it would take my input but then add 3 hours, I tried changing the time a few times but kept having the same issue. I’m not sure if it was simply a display glitch and didn’t bother testing it because I decided to use the option to start/stop based on sunrise/sunset in my area instead of the specific time. Being able to make changes from my phone as opposed to tinkering around in the garage is so much more convenient.

Easy to use
Delivery took a week since it is coming from California. Setup I had trouble to add my unit on to Rachio server. Rachio Service was quick, responsive and friendly. After installation is done, schedule setup is easy. Weather Intelligence Plus does not work well in my area (Mississauga, Ontario) as the weather forecast by the stations in Rachio database is mostly from the American network of Weather Underground and it is not accurate. I had to move around (trial and errors) with different stations in order to get a close reading of rain forecast and rainfall level as this will determine whether the unit will skip a scheduled water time.

Couldnt have been easier
Installation was simple, and the app did all the rest, connecting to wifi wasnt an issue but controller is in the same room as router. It was so simple i didnt bother with directions, just mount on wall, wire up, download the app and scan the barcode and you are pretty much done. App looks intuitive, it uses local weather stations to predict the incoming rain and avoids watering those days, app interface very simple and easy to use, manually watering separate zones is a breeze. Im very happy with the purchase, it was a bit pricey compared to other controllers but i wouldnt change my decision, the app made it all worth it for me,

Wish I bought it earlier
Installed it last Spring and have been religiously using it for a season. It’s was extremely easy to set up, and has been working reliably the whole time. The one I had before had a fixed program so sometimes it’d straight up be watering my lawn during a 30mm+ rain shower. With Rachio I notice how it bumps the schedule if it sees a lot of rain in the forecast. I also noticed how the grass started looking a tad healthier than when I had a fixed static irrigation program. So this device is basically a “set it and forget it”. It saves me both time and money. No more need to remember to switch off the irrigation before a rainy day. And the ability to turn it on with your phone has been a bliss, particularly when adjusting the sprinklers or blowing out the lines for winter. Awesome all around! Update (one year later): My controller got bricked after a firmware update. Luckily Rachio promptly sent me a replacement in the mail, no questions asked. New unit worked like a charm and all settings automatically transferred over. Impeccable customer service!! Would not hesitate to recommend.

Did not work. Would not connect to Rachio app
After wasting 2 hours and going through multiple ways for connecting to WiFi and Rachio app, the device would not let me connect to Rachio app and allow me to add the device. Big mistake. Amazon was offering discount on a previously owned product. It seems the previous owner must have returned a defective product and I am not sure if Amazon tried to ensure the proper functionality before offering the product for a discount. I’d rather buy a controller that has a web app and avoid using the “smart” apps.

Great Controller at Fair Price - highly recommended
1. Shipping is fast - arrived earlier than expected, well packed! 2. Installation is a swift for my 3-zone Rain Bird sprinkler system, there is no compatibility issues or whatsoever. Took a photo of the old unit's airing, took the old unit off, and put the Rachio 3 on the wall and replace the wires; power it up, download the app on my android phone and follow the on screen instructions, after a minute or two, the Controller is connected to my WIFI and I stated setting up my zones. easy like that. 3. so far so good, I am receiving notifications on watering cycles, skipping based on the weather intelligence, etc. I actually changed internet provider after the installation, my modem was reinitialized by the provider and my Rachio 3 controller reconnected itself automatically without any human interactions. for short, I am loving it and I will highly recommend this controller to anyone who needs one.
