Excellent Fryer, Great Price
This is about as basic of a bargain as you're going to find in any category. The features might seem pretty basic but they are obviously the result of years of feedback, simplification, and engineering. Only a couple of things keep it from being perfect (5 stars) for its category. The good: 1. I love the way the top closes and opens. It has an extra strong spring for an auto-open feature. But you have to keep it from flipping open too quickly or the inertia of the lid with almost flip the thing over backwards. It won't really do that but you're likely to over-react because it will make you think it is going to when it happens. In any case, holding your hand over it when pushing the release button solves the problem nicely. 2. Food can be lowered into and lifted out of the oil without having to open the lid. This is an awesome feature that minimizes any oil splatters getting out onto you or your counter tops. Good work, Presto. 3. Nice window. The window on top of the unit is reasonably large and easy to see through. 4. Nice size. It holds just about 1/2 gallon of oil so a 1 gallon bottle will fill it twice. And the design makes it possible to cook most things with that amount. It will cook enough for two moderate eaters or one big single. 5. Handle is easy to grip. Instead of a regular horizontal handle, like a pot or pan has, there is a handle more like a big coffee mug. That is easy to grip and move around in a very stable manner. 6. Temperature control knob has a wide range. Goes from 250-375 over a 270 degree rotation. The less good: 1. Lid flies open too fast. 2. Handle gets almost hot but still able to be handled. 3. No "OFF" position or switch. Unit must be unplugged to shut it off. But safety plug on rear makes that very easy. 4. No handle on oil tank. A little rotating handle like an old water pale would have worked nicely. All in all though, I really like this fryer. Looks like it will be very easy to clean and maintain. It makes good fries, which will be its primary job.

Inconsistent
So far, this my second unit in about a week. The first one worked twice and then… nothing, wouldn’t turn back on. The second time, it only heated the oil too hot, and burned my fries (no, I didn’t leave them for too long!) Plus, the lid didn’t close well - like a video posted already. So far, the second unit has a flaw out of the box, the spring, unlike many reviews is TOO WEAK, and won’t hold the lid open whatsoever. I have to say, the whole thing looks, and is made cheaply. No doubt about that. At least, the old design I see on older reviews, looked nice. Anyway, I switched the lids and, since the latch design is slightly different on both “current” units, this time around, it opens ans close smoothly, and swing open nicely. Will see if it works more than twice this time.

Works like any appliance filled with hot oil!
Have been using this fryer for months. It's great! That said, yes, most everything the one, two, and three-star raters said is true. It get's hot. Yes, it's "cool touch" when compared to the original metal Fry Daddy. If you touched those, you got burned. If you touch this, it's just hot. But what do you expect...it's 375 degrees. It doesn't get hot enough. Yes, it only goes to 375 degree. I'm guessing there's liability issues at play and small appliance manufactures probably don't want to market a home fryer that's over 400 degrees for fear of being sued when someone burns their house down. If you put a truckload of fries in there, you have two choices: fries that are just done, or greasy crispy fries. I think this has to do with dropping too many frozen fries at once dropping the temperature. I opt for plan B, I fry them in smaller batches so I can have them crispy without soaking up too much grease. I think it's safe to say the same is true of every other home fryer. The door is spring loaded. Yes, you will want to release the lid with one hand and ease the lid up with the other. It generates steam. Sure enough, it's hot and when you drop a basket filled with moisture-heavy goodies it's going to produce a lot of steam. Keep you hands away! It holds oil, it gets hot, it cooks stuff. All-in-all a considerable improvement over the old Fry Daddy. (Or putting an open pot of oil on the stove!) I like the basket, the lid, and ability to clean it. I feel much more comfortable loading the basket, putting it in, closing the lid, and then lowering the basket into the oil than I did chucking things into my old Fry Daddy and hoping to not get splashed or scalded. But please, make no mistake, it's a FRYER. I think it's considerably safer than the old Fry Daddy but you still need to be careful.

Few down falls but over all great buy.
I ordered this because my husband and I love wings and French fries. The price was good and we had received a gift card for Christmas so we decided to order it. When it came we where excited to try it. It works great but the spring that opens and closes the lid comes off very easily so you have to be gentle with it. I also noticed if your cooking with it and you hit the button the top flings open very fast and it can splash oil so I always make sure my hand is on the lid before pushing the button to release the lid so I can control how fast it goes up. I was nervous about some reviews about it having a funny smell to it when you first use it and it kinda did at first along with some smoke but after about a minute or so that all stopped and it wasn't even that bad. The window on top that I thought was a nice feature ended up being pointless because it gets so hot the window fogs up and gets covered in oil so you can't really see threw it anyway. However I absolutely LOVE the fact that you can lower and rise the basket without opening the lid making it was safer then some of the other ones because you can let the oil settle and drain off the food before opening the lid. Over all a good buy and I would recommend it to anyone. We been using it for awhile now and we love it.

Not a "Cool Daddy" at all. REVISED
I've used this three times now and I can't say I'm impressed with it. First it is not cool to the touch on the outside, it's more of a "Hot Daddy", and second, the french fires come out soggy, even though I always use the same oil brand and the same french fries brand and they always came out alright with my old deep fryer which had cost half the price of this one. The only thing going for it is that the pot and the lid can be removed for easy cleaning. No, I do not recommend this product. REVISED I have to admit I was wrong about the frying part, I guess I must have had a bad bunch of french fries and that might be the reason they didn't cook properly. I bought another brand of french fries and they came out perfect. But the outside of the fryer is still not 'cool' to the touch so that is the reason I do not give this a 5 star. I do recommend this fryer if you do not object to the fact that it is not 'cool' to the touch.

6 out of 10..WEAK LID
Ok so this deep fryer is generally ok. Gets hot pretty quick. Issues are the hinge on the lid is so weak it's dangerous. Once the unit heats up the lid hinge (plastic) becomes loose and easily falls off. Possibly into the hot oil BAAAAAAD !!!!! You gotta be careful with it. The hinge is pathetic! The hast the tub comes out is good for cleaning. The detachable cord is a bit weak but does work ok. I'd buy it again but the beware the weak lid situation.
