The Perfect Waist Pack for Cycling and Hiking with a Daytime Backpack
What a wonderful design! I've been using this sweet little pack for months, on day hikes and bike rides. It's obvious that it was built by those who hit the trails -- pockets where they need to be, substantial material, strong zippers AND zipper pulls of exactly the right length and material. I also own the larger brother of this small pack, and use it when I need more room, but this small pack is THE choice for cycling and also pairs with a small backpack perfectly for day hikes. I keep wallet and phone and anything else I need quickly in the waist pack, just pulling it around in front to grab what I need -- without the hassle of taking off a backpack to reach an item. Bravo Mountainsmith!

A nice pack that could use some improvement
This waist pack is very well made, very comfortable to wear, and I love the color choices. I like the yellow interior as it makes articles easy to find. I was of two minds on the main pocket -- it has one small flat interior zippered pocket but no other organizing partitions. For my purpose (cross-country skiing), I came to like it this way. With no partitions I could fit in more gear, especially my big mittens if I need to shed them, yet I could also rest assured that my keys and credit cards were easy to access and wouldn't accidentally fall out. I crammed in as much as I could to demonstrate capacity. I agree with other posters who point out that the main pocket is difficult to fully open with one or more water bottles in place, even if it's not crammed full. Any of my three water bottle test cases fit in the holder. The largest is 10" tall x 3" wide and holds 22 oz. The disposable bottle also holds 22 oz and the thermos holds 12oz. There's no security cord for the water bottles, a negative for me. (I lost one once in the snow after a fall.) As I was interested in carrying only one water bottle, I did not test it with two. To use as a shoulder bag, the hip belt tucks away behind a padded panel, and a padded shoulder strap is included. - Main zippered compartment: 7.5x7.5x3.5" (heavy mittens + midweight gloves + fleece neck gaiter + knit headband + sunglasses + Pixel 4a cell phone + trail map). Inner flat zippered pocket 5.75x4.5" (keys & cards) - Kangaroo pouch: 5x5.75x~1.5" (thick knit cap). Don't put anything small in here that you'll hate losing, or anything too large that could pop out. There's a key clip for waterproof keys. I put snacks in the 2nd water bottle holder and tightened down the strap to hold them in. The Amazon description calls it a 5L bag, but I calculated only 3.6L. (The product tag doesn't say.) It weighs 10 oz + 1 oz shoulder strap.

Perfect daily cycling bag.
The Drift has been a near-perfect daily cycling bag for me. It fits my 1.5 liter hydration bladder and everything I need for short trips, but isn't so ridiculously bulky that it looks like I'm wearing tactical gear. The quality and craftsmanship are as fantastic and the sage color is really lovely. Customer service from the Outland USA vendor was also top notch. The cons: weirdly, the sage color water stains. I was able to scrub it out, but plain water left marks when it dried. The Drift is also not as well balanced as the full-size Mountainsmith Tour, which I use for longer excursions- the Drift only has one set of side adjustment straps at the top of the bag, whereas the Tour has a set at top and bottom. This does fatigue my back if I'm walking around with a full/heavy pack, but it does just fine for cycling trips. The shoulder strap could also be a little thicker and more comfortable, but again, okay for cycling. Overall, I'm a big fan of all my Mountainsmith bags.

Great Pack - Water bottle holders could use help
The pack is well made. The interior of it is yellow for good visibility. It has one main compartment with a small zipper pocket inside that is able to carry small items. It has plenty of room to carry simple first aid, bandana, bug spray, concealed carry gun if desired, chap stick, lighter, paracord, emergency blanket, compass, whistle and more. The waist straps are comfortable with the max size being probably about a 40-42" waist. The Front synch strap pocket is good, but the straps also go past the water bottle pockets so if you loosen to get your water bottle out the front pocket is loose. Overall not bad. The biggest issue is the shape of the water bottle pockets. The bottom of the pocket is sloped to the side of the bag and does not have a flat bottom for the water bottle to rest. If you have a tall water bottle it will not sit on the bottom of the pocket nicely and may have a tendency to fall out. A regular plastic water bottle is fine, but if you have an insulated water bottle just be careful. Like the pack overall.

Great for shorter outings.
My wife calls it my “man purse”. For me it’s the perfect pack to walk the dogs or take a few hour hike on the nearby Appalachian Trail. Can fit a smaller handgun, some first aid essentials, phone, wallet and small water bottle. Would benefit from some external clip points or Molle webbing for attaching things, but other than that, it’s a well built lumbar pack. I do, however, find it more comfortable to wear closer to the front or hip side than in the small of back due to the waist strap digging in when loaded.
