Nifty little device that could do with a few upgrades.

I bought this thermometer/humidity monitor to help calm my nerves and give me a better night's sleep. It has been unbearably cold (polar vortex) this January in Chicago and I have been frantic to keep my 4 month old warm in his pack 'n play in our bedroom. Unfortunately, the only location for his crib is near a very cold window. I was constantly worrying that he was too cold in our room and got up to check on him several times during the night. Finally broke down and purchased the Vicks Health Check Monitor for the built in thermometer. Works great and the humidity monitor was an added bonus! This is a very basic unit at a reasonable price. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because it could really use a clock and a backlight feature for nighttime monitoring. Additionally, it's a little wobbly and tips over easily.

Exellent, no complaints - Accurate, handy, worked straight out of the box.

Okay, Here it is, i know sometimes you get dodgy merchandise - that happens once in a while. But if you get the majority of review pretty positive and a few that bad - its a good bet to say that its generally a good product. Thankfully for me I've had a good experience. Its not going to solve all your problems but its handy, small, is accurate - tells the moisture level and also the temp very accurate - I know as i compare it with my thermostat. It takes a few minutes to adjust if you move it but that is just natural. it worked straight out of the box, and I'm guessing will probably not have to replace the batter for a good few years easy. You know straight of the bat when you get a good product and I'm guessing this thing will last for many years to come. Vicks is a good brand. That's why I went with them, since i was a child I use to use their vicks rub when I got a cold or sore muscle or to relieve sinus and cold congestion. So it was just a natural choice and I"m glad i went with it. its a good product, and if you like something that works, is easy and accurate that will last a long time, you will like this one too.

Accurate

I purchased this because it was suggested by the Vicks humidifier I recently purchased for my bedroom. While reading the instructions of the humidifier, it said to keep the humidity of the room between 40-60%, so I needed humidity monitor. I set this monitor near my bed and it appears to be accurate. The closer I set this monitor to the humidifier, the higher % it reads and further away, the lower % it reads. The monitor uses a AAA battery but the monitor comes with a AAA already installed and requires the a plastic tab to be removed for it to work. The battery is easy to replace via a plastic door at the bottom. The temperature can be changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius by a small rubber push button on the back of the monitor. The monitor is made to stand up by itself on a flat surface and does not have a wall mount option. The overall quality build of this item feels cheap so I would not recommend dropping it. Overall, the item works well and is simple and easy to use.

Your mileage may vary...

I was suspicious of this monitor for RH because it read so much higher than three other devices I own. I have a brand new Frigidaire dehumidifier with an electronic display, an Accurite 00613A1 that I bought recently at the same time when I bought the Vicks (to compare against and because the Accurite had a magnet mount on the back), and a 10-15 year old Bionaire unit. All had temperatures within a point of each other. The Bionaire and Frigidaire seemed to be closest to each other on relative humidity readings. But the Accurite was 3-4 percentage points higher than the Bionaire and the Vicks was 9-10 points higher than the Bionaire. I did the salt-based RH test where you put a good quantity of plain dampened salt in a bowl inside a gallon baggie for 8 hours or so with the monitors inside next to the bowl. I did this with the Vicks and Bionaire only (the other units are at another location now) and the Vicks was dead-on as it is supposed to be at 75%. The Bionaire was low at 67%. There may be a difference in accuracy at the different humidity ranges or temperatures but this test led me to believe the Vicks has the most dependable readings.

It doesn't work and it's not returnable

The Vicks humidity monitor did not work from the time I received it. It was stuck at 15%, as some other reviewers have reported. The temperature reading was correct, but that's not what I bought it for. When I went to return it to Amazon, I was informed that the item was not returnable or refundable! On my first call, an automated agent said it could be returned using a link it texted me, but there was no return available through that link. Eventually, I reached an Amazon agent who refunded my purchase price. It's incredible that Amazon sells a brand-name item that can't be returned, replaced, or refunded (except with extraordinary effort and persistence). I took the refund. I would not buy this item again or recommend it, and as a result I have a negative impression of both Vicks and Amazon.

Great mold monitors!

We bought 4 of these to monitor a long term problem with mold around our floor registers that required duct cleaning, replacement, repair and resizing. Their readouts are not identical, when together, but cover a span of about 5 percent, which is ok with us. We have a 2900 sq ft rancher, 3BR, 4BR, a heat pump and three propane heat sources as backup for power losses. We've had the monitors for 2 months as we transition through spring. We dispersed these widely and moved them about, finding humidity varies about 10% from highest to lowest areas. Highest was in a bedroom most distant from a bathroom and kitchen, with two floor registers! Most of the time the humidity was close to 60% and was best kept about 55% or lower with HVAC set for 1 Cycle Per Hour (default on our Honeywell thermostadt was 3 CPH). The monitors have been a great buy and are helping us deal with humidity issues. We hope we'll now be able to stop mold growth during the humid summer and monitor moisture in the house on a regular basis. Anyone with mold issues should have several of these.
