Attractive, if a bit small

After looking around the Internet, I thought this looked like the best bread box for the price. Bread boxes don't seem as common as they once did, but we needed one to protect our bread from our cats, who like to jump on the counter when no one is around and nibble on the plastic wrapping around a loaf of bread. The main drawback to this box is that it is rather smaller than I expected. I seem to remember bread boxes fitting two decent loaves of bread, but this one really only fits one -- although you can probably also squeeze in a package of English muffins. Been so long since I have had a bread box that I'm not sure if this is the standard size, but I think not. The box is nice looking, although ours had a couple of small flaws in the finish. The flaws are not terribly noticeable and certainly not enough of a problem to warrant sending it back. But if you are buying this in a store, you may want to take it out of the box and look it over.

Nice addition to my kitchen

My use of this bread box is a bit unconventional, but it completely fits the purpose. Our kitchen gathers a lot of clutter, like cell phones, wallets, keychains, etc. at the end of each day. I use this bread box to capture the clutter and keep the kitchen neat and tidy. It is spacious enough inside to hold all stuff we use, plus, the top is solid and smooth, making a nice tray for holding cell phones while they charge overnight. Since the box is only eight inches high, it fits nicely underneath an electrical plug and fits cozily in the corner of the kitchen counter. The interior was a bit dry, making the rolltop a bit sticky, but I used some kitchen cooking spray to get into the track and rolled it back and forth a few times. Works great! I shined up the wood with a touch of mineral oil and it gives the appearance of a much more expensive piece of cabinetry. I love the honey coloring - it goes great with my maple cabinets. I'm very pleased with the product and it's flexibility of use. Not just for bread!

Very nice item but not as big as I hoped

This bread box is nice and keeps my counter tops neater. It was inexpensive and definitely a good value for the price. It doesn't fit two loaves of bread however. It looks like it might be deep enough and when you put them in it looks okay. However the door needs space to slide behind the bread and it gets caught when you overfill it. Still I am glad I bought it. I can put a loaf of bread in it and maybe another bag of buns and they are concealed and I also have a little shelf on top of the bread box to set things on.

Unbelievably robust

When you receive it, you wonder how flimsy it is. However, that is one of the great advantages of bamboo...light while still being quasi indestructible. My dremel discovered this quickly. The dimensions are extremely accurate. However, my area is slanted...and while I *thought* it would fit, it would only fit after I took the front section of the bottom off. After cutting away that section, it is still so sturdy that, wedged in the area I planned for it, the roller has not complained once. For the price I could not beat it. And, it holds a full size loaf and a half from a bread maker. Most won't even think about one as they are too short.

Excellent, and matches my bamboo bought elsewhere

The only reason I give this only 4 stars rather than 5 is that it really only fits one standard-sized loaf of bread....it would be more functional if it were bigger, could hold some rolls also. But it does what I want it to...gets my boyfriend's icky Wonderbread off the microwave and out of sight. I keep my whole wheat bread in the fridge so it lasts longer, as I don't eat bread as frequently as he does, so having room for 2 loaves is not really an issue...it just would be nice for when I buy him a new one, but he still has a few slices of the old one to eat.

Nice for the Price!

I have currently had this bread box since Sept. 2, 2012. I have not had any of the issues mentioned in other reviews. Mine still opens easily and is very sturdy. The top does have room to hold items, and is pretty sturdy as well. I have a small fruit basket and 2 bottles of wine on mine, and it hold up fine. Though I don't have any children to "bang it around" I do have an adult roommate that is pretty rough with just about everything. She has knocked the hinges off my cabinets several times in the past few years due to slamming, but our breadbox is still holding up fine! I did follow the suggestion from another review and mineral oiled the box when I purchased, and have not had any signs of warping or shrinking. I get compliments all the time.

Good breadbox, great price

I've been look for a breadbox for ages. I found this on Amazon and it was perfect. I like that it has a flat top so I can store salt, pepper, sugar and butter on it to keep clutter to a minimum. The only reason I didn't give it a five rating was the top catches on being rolled back. But it's not a big deal and I think with time will loosen up. I really like this breadbox and now I don't have to deal with refrigerated bread or bread on the counter molding so quickly. I'd buy it again.

functional and attractive

A very handsome unit with a small footprint. The roll top (so far) has worked smoothly. I noted on some reviews that there was concern over the way the roll top was constructed. The one I received has a cloth backing glued to the entire roll top, which should add to its durability. Tall loaves need to stored on their sides. Suggest giving it a quick wipe with a bit of mineral oil to make sure that you don't have any wood shrinkage. It is sturdy enough that you can place other items on top of it.

nice size for small counter space.

The look is great! The size for those who buy one or two loaves or one loaf and one package of buns. Not suitable for a large, bread-consuming family. Okay for a couple or three people who don't eat a whole lot of bread. The rolling part is delicate, so not good for rough usage by teenagers or young kids.

Theres probably a better one available elsewhere

Its a bit sticky trying to move the door up and down - I'm hoping it gets better as I use it more but it requires two hands to open. Overall works great and looks cute in my kitchen

Works great

It's bigger than we expected, holds all sizes of breads we have thrown at it, which is great, because now we can throw a loaf of bread and some buns in there at the same time. Door slides nice and smoothly, and it looks well made.

You can't beat this great price!

At first, I was hesitant when I got this item because it looks like a lot of air escapes through the slits of the sliding door. But it has worked perfectly for my homemade raisin bread! You could easily fit more than one loaf in it. I keep my honey jar inside too. It would fit nicely on the counter-top or in a cupboard. I recommend this and would buy it again!
