It's basically a badly made shoe lace that cleans your cassette
I can just imagine a shoe lace manufacturer looking at a bad lot of shoe laces. "They're too short and loose, no-one will buy these. What are we going to do?" (for some reason they have an Italian accent in my head). "I know, we'll sell them to cyclists to clean their cassettes" "You're a genius, Giuseppe, that'sa what we'll do" So that's what they did and this is the best way to clean a cassette without removing it. Seriously, I know they were carefully designed for their purpose. You could probably clean them and reuse them but I'm not sure it's worth it. One of them can clean a cassette especially as I have a bucket of hot soapy water with me because I'm cleaning my bike. Get it wet and soapy and the grime comes right off. Rinse it every few sprockets. One other nice thing is that, unlike a brush, they don't spray greasy water all over the place. You can use them indoors without fouling the floor and walls and other parts of the bike. I totally recommend them.

Easiest option for cleaning cassette
Gear Floss is the quickest and easiest option for cleaning your cassette without taking it off. It's also good for getting dirt and debris out of those small or tight spaces where a brush or rag can't fit!!!

Does the job
Well, it’s meant to clean grime out of your cassette, and it does that well. I have a 10 x 51 Shimano cassette, and the cogs are placed tightly together. The floss and degreaser have the cassette looking and shifting like new after a dusty season of singletrack and gravel. Just don’t expect to reuse the floss on this drivetrain. It shredded, but cleaned very well. Our 11 x 42 cassette didn’t shred the floss has wider spaces between cogs. The floss cleaned it equally well, but didn’t shred in the process. We washed the floss, but it was stained afterward. Not sure we’ll reuse that piece.

Not essential but work nicely.
I needed to pad an order by a few dollars to get free shipping on some other items, so I picked this up even though I was skeptical about it. I mean, seriously, they look like shoelaces and how could they be any better than old shoelaces or thin strips of cloth I can make myself? Well, they DO look like shoelaces but they work much better than shoelaces or strips of cloth. They clean up pretty well, too, so they can be reused quite a number of times before, I assume, they eventually fray and fall apart. I've used them to clean the freewheels and cassettes of my bikes, as well as the pulleys of my derailleurs and just generally get to other small and hard-to-reach spots. Even once they look pretty dirty they do a good job of continuing to remove dirt, and the big clumps can be removed by wiping them through a rag allowing a single piece of "floss" to get most or all of a bike's bits clean. 20 of these will last me at least a year so if the price stays around seven dollars I'll probably buy another pack when the last of my current pack are gone. However, I wouldn't call these things essential as you certainly can make do with shoelaces or cloth strips if you don't have a few dollars to spring on these. On the other hand, if you can't afford 14 bits once a year then you probably don't have a bike worth cleaning, anyway. I do wish they were thicker, or came in a second thicker width. I can see where thicker "floss" might not work in some places, but in some cases being thicker would make cleaning some bike bits easier and more efficient.

Works great
Works great. Cleans front chain ring and rear cogs on cassette. Also cleans gear wheels in rear derailleur. Recommended in the book "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance" which I love. Most repairs and maintenance I do myself, rarely need to take to a bike shop. I do not understand the negative reviews, the gear floss works just great for me. No unraveling of material, stayed together and removed grease and road grime. Only need to use every few weeks or months. May need to use more for a mountain bike in mud, but I'm road only. Will order again.

High Hopes but Not Good
I used regular pipe cleaners before and I will eat back to them. I don’t see how there are people able to use them more than once. The floss gets destroyed by the cogs unless you fiddle them in which takes a long time. Idea is good but not working for me.

A convenient tool
Easily allows flossing between gear wheels.

It’s Just Fun
There is absolutely no need for this at all. But it’s fun and it does work. I’ve used about 4 strands now and they clean the gunk out of your chain and cassette just fine, but they fray and tangle in the teeth constantly. There’s a learning curve for sure, but come on. Bike floss. It’s just fun. If you’re looking for practicality, I would just use a pipe cleaner or a wire brush set. They’re reusable and better for the environment. -Side note: these are a fine substitute for a third hand tool as they fit between the links very well. Just loop the floss through and tie a not to your desired length, and it works very well. When you’re done, just cut it and throw it away

Great product for bike
Easy to use, effective at removing dirt and oil from cassette rings, jockey wheels, etc. on the push bike. Can be used many times effectively before having to bin. A bit expensive for what it is, but as it works very well And saves me a lot of time, frustration and other cleaning products I’m happy overall.

Ideal for cleaning bike cassette
Ideal for cleaning between rear cassette cogs, partivularly when used in conjunction with an effective de-greaser.
