Does what I need it to do
Works well for taking samples of wine from my gallon jugs in the fridge. Thumb is big enough to get a good seal so there's no spillage. If I were trying to sample from larger containers this would be inadequate due to the shorter length.

Gets the job done
Works much better than the two-piece type with a lot less waste.

A little too short for convenient use with a carboy.
It takes 3-4 dips to get enough liquid to put into a cylinder for specific gravity measurement. The design is fine, and I like that it's all glass. It just needs to be about 16" to 18" long instead of 12". You've got headroom at the top of the carboy, then you can't put the thing all the way in anyway, because you have to hold on to it and seal the top with your thumb. Net effect is that only 3 or 4" actually goes below the liquid. I have a longer one, but it's plastic. I prefer this one to the other because it's glass and I can sanitize with heat. The plastic ones get ruined even by just pouring boiling water in them. I had one that got all messed up just soaking in a bucket of hot tap water. So, I do use this, and I prefer it to the other. I just wish it was longer.

Great Thief, Easy to Use
Love the thief, it isn't too big for 1 gallon bottles which I use for long term, bulk storage and need to taste test while remaining sanitary. It takes about 3 full grabs to fill up my graduated cylinder for my hydrometer, and one for a good taste. One thing to note, is when you plunge it into the liquid, because the tip is so small it takes about 4-5 seconds to fill up the tube with liquid. The small tip helps with drips, but does make the filling take a few seconds longer, but I don't see this as a design flaw in any way.

Easy to use and clean
Super easy to use and clean. It's smaller, which I love, but keep that in mind if you have a larger test jar for measuring w/your hydrometer. This is amazing for picking up small amounts to taste or to fill a narrow beaker. As long as you're covering the top well (which is incredibly easy since it's small) there's zero leaking.

It Smashed in the Case
Just a sad story. I dropped mine wile getting it out of the box I store wine tools. It did work well with in the 12 inch reach. luckily I have a plastic backup. This occurred in front of a friend I was going to draw a small taste. The plastic replacement is a bottle filler with the rubber tip. It worked great, only my pride got hurt. I think the glass is to thin. It did break wile still in it's padded tube. Just lean toward plastic and sanitize between uses. I cannot recommend using this wine thief when there are plastic unites closely priced.

Not bad
12 inches is not super generous, but plenty for a medium-sized barrel or carboy, to reach the center of the liquid. Four stars instead of five, since the thief leaked from the tip no matter how hard i pressed my thumb on the top. On the other hand, just touching the tip to the inside of the testing cylinder allows the drops remaining to completely evacuate the thief, reducing chances of cross-contamination. As a bonus, sanitizing a 12" wine thief is much easier than with a 14" thief. Definitely not sorry I bought this.

Keeps theft sanitary
I steal, have stole, felonious amounts of wine with this. I could not fathom even thinking of thieving wine without it. I enjoy the fact that it is glass. Glass is easily cleansed of fingerprints, and sanitized. As long as you render the craft of wine, and wine thievery the respect it deserves, and handle this tool gently, it will not break. One complaint, it is not as large as one would like for use with glass car-boys of any size, 3 gallons or larger. I would most strongly suggest a longer thief in that application.
