Nice countertop solution
I've been using this for about a week after being very resistant to saving food scraps. I like the size - it's perfect for daily use. Our city has us add scraps to our green/landscape bin so composting is fairly straight forward. The countertop bin they provided us was just absolutely terrible so I've been hunting for a decent replacement ever since. This looks really nice in the kitchen, you wouldn't know it was full of food scraps. It's a good size, it's small so it doesn't take up too much space, but roomy and really easy to clean. The lid opens up nicely and is lightweight so it doesn't tip the bin (like the city provided one did...) The metal handle is also a great upgraded feature. It just feels sturdy and well made. It's still winter so the bugs aren't out yet, so I'm not sure how well this will deter pests. I'll update if we end up with a fruit fly problem.

Hope there’s a inner container.
It’s well built. I clean out the content at most every two days, if not everyday. So there’s no issue of fruit flies or odor like some reviews mentioned. The only thing is that I wish there’s an inner removable container that I can take it out so I don’t have to always move the whole thing, and it would be easier to clean also.

Perfect design.
Love this! Looks great on counter and gray color coordinates perfectly. Low profile, not too tall. Carrying handle folds front or back and is comfortable for toting out to compost bin. I use compostible bags which fit nicely over base edges. Removable base edge cover holds bag in place. Easy lift up tab on top cover. Looks neat and clean on counter. Comes with charcoal filter but I have not had to use it. Rinses clean. Love everything about this design. Perfect for my needs.

Clever & compact
Like eeeeeeveryone, I had the giant silver gallon bucket with the double-filter lid...that required me to have one clean hand to lift the lid AND set the lid down on the counter (eww), so I am thrilled to have found this cutie! I can flip the lid up with a knuckle, and don’t have to sit a lid down on anything else. It’s the little things! ???? This IS much smaller than my last one, but I prefer that for two reasons: (1) I’m tossing my compost more often, so it remains “fresher;” and (2) I have enough bag left to properly tie it off before tossing into the green (curbside compost) bin. It also has a low profile on the counter. This thing is also super easy to clean! It does “sweat” a bit. I put a paper towel in the bottom of the bin before putting in a fresh bag. If ever there was an attractive compost bucket, this is it.

Carbon filter in the lid has allowed flies to lay eggs and breed maggots
This countertop garbage bin, like some other models, has a carbon filter in the lid in order for the contents to breathe. The smell seems to attract the stray fly that gets in during the summer months. As a result, eggs were laid in the filter and developed into maggots, which will develop into more flies. Our section of Brooklyn NY does not have bins for this sort of garbage, so emptying the container daily is not an option and it needs to accumulate for a week. Right now confronting writhing maggots is a challenge. It's a trade off: OXO has a garbage bin with a completely closed lid, and we never had any maggots with it (although we didn't try it during the warmer months) but with three quarts capacity it isn't large enough for us for a week. It was because of its limited capacity that we decided to try this model (its capacity is a full gallon, just right for the two of us). In addition to the capacity, I also like the wide opening of this bin, and how its top hides the plastic bag within. Its color matches our countertop perfectly. Right now I have this model's filter soaking in a mix of bleach and water, trying to kill all remaining eggs. The bucket is in the dishwasher. I will see what I can do with respect to baking soda etc to make the odor less attractive to the stray fly... But the patience here is limited.

Looks nice on counter
I like this one, i like the shape, it saves space on the counter...if its curved it would be wasting space on the curved area... it works well... pricy but feels like good quality.

Great compost bin, not too large, fits on counter
After many bins, this is the best. It's small enough to fit on counter, looks nice and is the lid is easy to lift while you are working in the kitchen.

Great little bin, perfect for small space, sleek and tidy!
This is a great organics bin, I've had mine for about two months now and not one complaint. It cleans easy, bags are easy to switch out and there's a spot inside the bin where a new bag can be fastened so it stays put and doesn't move around on you. It comes with a small carbon filter which is very good for not letting any odours escape the unit. The lid fits tight and sturdy, the handle tucks away behind the unit and the whole thing looks neat and tidy on the countertop and is the perfect size for several days of food scraps (for two people at least, we cook a lot at home so we do use it constantly throughout the day). The lid stays up and out of the way nicely when you open it to throw the scraps in without closing on you unexpectedly. Mine is the charcoal color and looks great, and the design makes it easy to tuck out of the way and fit against the wall easily. I'm super happy with it overall!

Expensive but very practical and worth the extra.
I used to use the mushroom boxes to collect bits for the compost but I was having to go and empty them up to three times a day. This is much better. It holds a good amount of vegetable waste and trips to the heap now happen once every other day. I have not used the Joseph Joseph bags, just the 10 litre compost bags from Tesco. Once I'd got the knack of fitting them tidily and gathering the excess to poke through the hole at the back, the cheapo bags work fine. I wanted a rectangular bin as I work on a butchers' trolley and was sweeping all the waste straight into the mushroom boxes with the back of my knife or a sponge. Old habits die hard and a few times I have tried holding the box in the same way, but the top rim that covers the bag edges comes off - with disastrous results as the rest of the box, and its contents, crashes to the floor. I am now sweeping onto a small chopping board and scraping that into the bin. The rectangular shape is good for that. The bin is a good squat shape, no chance of it toppling over. The lid stays up fine but I will not be putting this through the dishwasher just in case I end up with the same lid problems others have had. It's easy enough to wipe out and doesn't seem to get very dirty at all. I have found some condensation in the bin underneath the bag but that is easily wiped with a bit of kitchen roll. I have no complaints about the handle either. It seems fine. The charcoal filter works really. It holds in smells completely, even the obnoxious smell of banana skins stays inside. I did think that once this filter wore out I would cut a chunk of cooker hood filter to use instead but it works so well and seems to be lasting ok so I might splash out on the correct filters. Just for the sake of testing it thoroughly I have removed the filter and put it back. I struggled until I realised that you release the clip underneath and push up so the filter cover pops off the top. I find that I only need to push one clip and do not need to squeeze the two together. All in all, a well designed product that does the job extremely well.

So much nicer than the one our city provided
A few things I prefer about this over the generic one that most cities provide you: - Easy flip lid that doesn't latch. Easy to flip open with various body parts while holding a plate of waste. - The size is a bit smaller, it fits on a countertop better and just looks nicer and more stylish too! - The scent filter and airflow design is nice, no smell so far. - Being a bit smaller than the city provided one means we empty it more frequently, which is nice because things don't get as mushy and smelly. It forces us to have to dump it every couple days or so. Definitely would buy again. Thinking of grabbing a couple more to keep on top of each toilet for tissues.

Sturdy and stylish
We use this to collect food waste before taking it to the compost heap. It’s brilliant - looks good, easy to carry, empty and ckean
