Great expansion
I don’t own a lot of expansions for my board games but I am glad I bought this one. The power up cards give a great feature to this game and really up the replay ability.

Love what it adds, sadly it is not enough
I like this game, I really do. Kaiju monsters and super creatures are awesome, the core idea of battling it out to be ruler of Tokyo and the strongest monster left standing is appealing and calls to me thematically. The game just doesn't deliver everything I need, for me it just plays too fast and many parts of the game just never come into play. Moving on to what this expansion adds though, it does a good job of delivering some fun additions. The Pandakai character looks good and the true important part of the expansion, the power-ups, deliver a nice twist to add to your games. Each of your battling monsters now have their own special powers to use during the game. These power-ups I think almost completely replace the often unused energy cards from the base game. So is this a good thing or bad thing? I always felt the base game and the energy cards just never worked out, it's one of my complaints with the game itself. So for this expansion to come up with an easier way to use "powers" is great, the expansion checks off the box for fulfilling that need. Here is where once again it fails to deliver for me. The powers, as fun as they are, just won't get used very much. You'll maybe get the chance to use one or two of them. Yes, you could certainly change the way you play and push your luck with your die rolls to constantly try to trigger your powers, while you're doing that though someone else will likely just cap out on victory points and end everything. I know King of Tokyo is supposed to be a fast game, so I cannot fault it or the expansion for delivering on that. Personally, I cannot get past how much content and mechanics are available in this game but never get used. The powers are so fun and offer up so many neat combinations, but the game as a whole plays too fast for you to really enjoy them. If you are unlike me and love King of Tokyo for what it is, get this expansion. If you're reading this review you almost certainly do already like the base game so you will add some great content for the price. Have fun ruling over Tokyo! Go Cyber Kitty!

How to fit expansion into original game box
Discard both of the black placement inserts. The air bubble pouches I had were able to fit the character boards and playing cards. Use the groove to attach the black character stands to each other. I recommend finding or creating alternative game rules after you’ve tried playing with the original rules. The cards are what makes this game, but players don’t get enough Energy Cubes to buy them. An example of one of my alternate rules to discourage camping for Victory Points- energy cubes are like XP, you can’t get energy without at least one resolved Claw and you can’t win the game with the 20 Victory Points unless you are in Tokyo City. The game board is useless, might as well play with two drink coasters. Another example of my alternative game rule- Monster have to attack into Tokyo Bay to get to attack into Tokyo City, both positions have different advantages. The monster in Tokyo Bay gains energy faster, but can’t heal at all. The monster in Tokyo City can only heal when attacking Tokyo City via Victory Points, it also can only attack the city OR attack Tokyo Bay Monster. It also permanently loses the ability to evolve. I added alternate die roll results that lets Monsters outside the Bay and City evolve from the expansion must faster than original rules. This is to get player customization going faster. These are only a few examples of the rules I created, it’s meant to add more strategy through more card usage while keeping the game quick to learn and play.

A good addition, though it won't fit in the original game's insert.
Power ups seem pretty powerful. King of Tokyo has never lasted very long for us. We usually have five players, and the damage that goes around is just hard to keep up with. However, grabbing health and power ups for free can help. We've never gone through many of the energy cards, because the game doesn't last long enough to afford to buy many cards. Getting the power ups with the health needed anyway, gives the game a little more variety. Choosing one of two cards reduces the random factor a little. I could not combine any of the four boxes I have for King of Tokyo. The inserts have no extra room for the characters. I could put the power up cards from Halloween and Cthulhu into this box, however, but not the rest.

The expansion that I was waiting for
I was eager to buy it when I noticed it that it was going to be released. I have King of Tokyo first edition, and I didn't had a chance to buy the first edition expansion. I am happy that this expansion included the evolution cards for the exclusive monsters of both editions: Kraken and Cyber Bunny of the first edition and Space Penguin and Cyber Kitty for the second. So any version of the base game that you may play you will have an extra of 2 sets of the old version and the discarded 7th monster evo cards. My idea/suggestion to play is to mix all 72 cards in a bunch and whenever a player rolls 3 hearts, he/she can take the top 2 of the 72 evo cards and pick one and discard the other.

Text book case of how to do an expansion right
This is a great example of an add-on that adds lots of depth, fun and personality to the game, without adding much at all in terms of complexity. You now have a series of power-ups - special powers unique to each monster that work a lot like upgrades. If you roll 3 hearts, you get one. It's that simple. But at the same time, it adds a lot of strategery to the game, and suddenly the monsters now play different from each other. TL;DR - if you like playing King of Tokyo, you'll love playing it with this expansion.

A fun new addition to an already great game.
The original game is already fun for my whole family, but it can get stale after a while, as the characters have no real personality by themselves. This addition allows you to put strategy into your character selection. Do you want a character with a bunch of bells and whistles, a character that is focused on offense, a character with lots of opportunities to heal, all this and more is available now with this expansion. Now you can choose the characters for more than just their good looks.
