Solid 4-Stars performance and unbeatable for the price but with some potential for future improvements
>> Update 05/16/2017 I've became a true fan of this rod model, now I have it in 7' and 8' lengths and I was even lucky enough to grab one of the last 7-foot of the previous version of this telescopic Mako rod that used to come in cool "cosmic blue" color. Long story short - the 7' model has gone through a whole fishing season of 2016 without any issues, I've used this rod for trolling in a reservoir from my Meyers canoe w/ trolling motor a lot and also used it for catfishing. I got snugged many times while trolling, but the rod would rather turned the canoe or at the latest reel drag would engage, but no any damage to the rod ever occurred. Heaviest fish I've pulled with this rod was an 11-3/4lbs bluefish. Now, my 2017 fishing season started in NC where I was in time for the chopper bluefish run. It was my first experience to fish for that fish but the rod did the job of pulling the fish and inducing adrenaline into my blood. First chopper got hooked while I was away from my spot assisting another angler on the pier. I was smart enough to toss butt of my rod under a bench and to use circle hooks - a fish took the bait and the rod held it for me while I was running back to the spot. First chopper was lost due to a hook bent and broken (2/0 circle). It did not last too long until a second one took my bait with my upgraded 5/0 circle hook. While battling the fish I swapped with 3-4 anglers while dragging the fish closer to shore and then while holding the line tight I traversed from the pier to the beach and pulled the fish onto the sand - my first chopper came at 9lbs! And my telescopic Mako 8' was ready to do more! One advise to anyone using the rod is to always completely clean the rod before folding/collapsing it back, otherwise any sand/dirt will be trapped inside the rod and it may cause issue when using the rod next time. I had to thoroughly clean-out some trapped sand from the rod after a late night fishing trip when I had to drop it on the sand to run and grab my other rod where a fish hooked. >> Below is my original review. I have used this 7' Mako telescopic rod for about couple months now and I'm very satisfied with this product. Actually, I own two of these in 7' rods and I'm getting another one in 8' length in a couple days. I fish from the bank and often I need to walk/hike a mile or two to my fishing spot through the woods. Also I plan to take these rods with me whenever we travel to the Atlantic shore. This is why I chose an easily portable telescopic rod. I liked this rod especially because it was made for salt water fishing and rated as medium-heavy action. For the record, here is basic info for 7' rod: Model number: 706MHSPT; Section number: 6 sections; Action: Medium-Heavy; Line weight: 12-30lbs; Lure weight: 1-3oz; It comes in a clear plastic tube and with a lockable plastic cap to cover top tip and a few top guides. The cap protects the rod while you are transporting it in your car and while you are carrying it to your fishing spot. The clear tube can be used to transport the rod in your luggage and the tube can actually fit two of these rods. Everything described above is a pure PROS to me. The only CONS it has is the main line guide which is too small and is going to affect your maximum casting distance when used with a spinning reel of size 40 and greater. Update 12/08/15: Lowered rating to 4 stars due to the lead guide that is just too small. If guides were updated on this rod to be true spinning rod guides then the rod would deserve 5 stars.

Finally, a telescopic rod with a backbone!
I travel fairly frequently for work and I always bring a rod to fish afterhours. I seek out spots to hit on foot-streams, rivers, jetties, beaches, culverts, etc. I'm usually casting baits from 1/4-5/8oz. I've tried a handful of telescoping rods for the covenience they offer, but they've all been so light and whippy the they were no fun to cast with, hard to set a hook with, too weak to fight anything with size, and brittle. I gave up on finding a good one for a couple years until I had a trip where I couldn't bring a 2-piece and I re-opened the investigation. I read all the reviews I could find to try and find a telescoping I wouldn't hate, and decided to give this a try. I'm so pleased with it! It casts great, has backbone enough to set the hook and fight fish. Guts enough for fishing sheepshead on piers, bluefish on jetties, wipers in resevoirs, channel cats in the rivers, pike in the culverts at home. Gets small enough that my wife doesn't even realize it's in the car when we leave for a road trip. One more thing I like is that the eyelets are sized on the small side for a spinnining rod. I imagine this design choice is to make it more compact, but it made me think to try it with a bait casting reel-which ended up working great. Now, I bring a spinning reel with lighter line and a baitcaster with heavier line and swap whichever reel better suits the water and lure choice. The rod is in that sweet spot right between where it really serves as a jack-of-all-trades. It's a winner

very portable
This was purchased to replace the numerous chinese telescopic fishing rods previosly owned, all of which broke or snapped with fish on or by simple cast of a 1/4 lure. Although these chinese rods appear to be of good quality, they snap when you least expect it, even if pampered. Now on to the review of this fiberglass telescopic rod... What impresses me about this pole is that it is so similar to the one i had as a kid, one that that i puchased from Thriftee store (when it carried fishing tackle and supplies) in los angeles. That pole, by the way, is how i learned to fish from fresh water lakes to salt water. It lasted for many years and survived the abuse and neglect of a 10 yr old kid til about the time i left for college...rod was lost when it was probably loaned out and never returned. I hope and quite confident this rod will perform the same. Great price for nostalgia aye? Highly recommend and will buy more after this one is field tested. Will post update on findings.

Excellent product and I have lots of fishing rods!
I was pleasantly surprised by this rod. I'll rate it a 5 for a few reasons. It casts well, is durable and very easy to transport. I have used if for beach fishing in Cuba and Mexico, and it does double duty retrieving downed ducks in ponds (very heavy lure and weeds + Duck). I have the 8' version and it has trolled big rapalas well for cuda's and casts up to 3oz weight quite well. Cast and retrieve or hanging baits. The one thing that put it to a 5 is truly how portable it is. Just leave the lure attached and retract and it's easy to carry or pack. I hate walking back to the resort with big fishing rods hanging everywhere. No problems with this. Sections get a little tight after fishing a while however they always loosen up and fold back. It does not truly compete with a good 2pce surf rod by any means and it is thick(er) at the handle as its fiberglass, but it does what is says quite well and is durable. Its in my bag for our trip to Mexico this Nov.

Best Bang For Your $$$
Decided to take a gamble with this rod; I was planning a salmon fishing trip but needed my gear to be as small as possible as I would be packing in and out quite a ways. I looked at a lot of telescoping rods online and decided to pick this one up. Let me tell you, I couldn't have been more pleased. I had about 6 coho salmon on that day, ranging from 8 to 27lb. I landed all of them without any issues from the rod - it never collapsed on itself, or showed any signs of breaking/cracking. The rod has a nice give to it when fish are peeling line and was easy to extend as well as put away at the end of my trip when it was time to hike out. It's so compact that I may consider purchasing a second rod to keep as a backup incase anything does happen to my first one - I'd hate for it to no longer be available! All in all, I couldn't recommend this rod enough. I can't speak for fish weighing over 30+ lbs, but anything up to and including salmon this rod will do you just fine.

Broke it within one season
I was initially impressed with this rod's sturdiness for it being a telescopic option. Bought for use in kayak and light surf fishing. Caught strings of Mackerel from the boat & reeled in a 28" striped bass among others from a beach without apparent issue. Within 20 outings the rod tip snapped off while casting a 1.5oz lure. May buy again as a handy backup for light surf fishing, or as a boat rod where casting is not necessary. The telescoping feature is very useful for some applications. For the price it's not too bad, but I would never consider it to be a go-to rod for regular use.

Price was great, seems to work well
Price was great, seems to work well. Great for travelling, and comes with a small end cover that you can hang up.

Sturdy and very portable for travelling
So far I've traveled with it once. It collapses to a small size which meets most airline regulations and is easy to travel with. The sturdy plastic case with foam at each end protects the rod well. It was great for catching smallmouth bass. I make sure to wipe the rod well before collapsing it to remove any grit or sand which might get it stuck.
