Almost Squirrel Proof
the wire portion above the decorative band is too tall allowing squirrels to insert heads to chew plastic seed tube. I can work with this, adding hardware cloth to that part to keep the fuzzy tailed rats out.

Great specialty feeder for lesser goldfinches
This is the only feeder I've found that will allow the lesser goldfinches to access sunflower chips without the larger house finches taking over. There have been a couple of house finches that have squeezed through but most like to access leftovers around the edges. The consumption of sunflower chips has been reduced by 75% which helped pay for a 2nd feeder. This feeder is VERY DIFFICULT to clean so you need a 2nd feeder to put in place while you scrub the 1st one with soap & water and leave it to dry for a few days.

Nice looking
This is a very nice looking feeder. However, truly, I found the outer cage diameter too small (holes to get into the seed) . I gave it plenty of time. I ended up clipping some of the outer cage to make bigger holes. Yes, it welcomes the squirrels, but, I use Safflower seeds. After easily opening some areas with clipping shears, I have birds! Maybe this defeats the whole purpose of this feeder though!

Nice bird feeder. Photo is deceiving.
I am writing this but I have not set it up and put it out yet. I just wanted you to know the picture is deceiving. Check out the dimensions. I didn't! It's much taller and more narrow than the photo. That said I'm hoping I will like it. Will add to review later. Well the feeder does just fine, looks great. I like it much better being more tall and narrow than the photo. Can't say the big birds don't try to get seed, but they haven't had much luck. It's a nice feeder. The top is a little hard to get back on, but not a game changer for me. I'll keep it!! Update: 11/20/20: great feeder. When filling up the feeder with seed, be sure the metal rod stays in the center. If it doesn't, move the rod to the center of the seed before screwing the lid on. This eliminates any problem with the lid fitting.

Small Bird Hang-out, Feeding Station, and Safe Zone
I love this bird feeder and plan on getting 2 more. Top openings 1x2”, bottom openings 1x1” Took 3 days for my little birds to find the way in (top). First one, others followed. Before long 5 little birds were playing inside, feasting, and taunting the larger birds. Next day, they couldn’t remember how to get into the cage. Hit and miss with the little ones going back in. Flying into and down isn’t normal bird behavior. I decided to modify the cage for easier access. At the bottom, I created 1x2” doors by removing the bar between two squares (blunt/sand the sharp edges, where cut!!). I placed several mixing them up on different rows. Hint: Don’t make a door in front of feeding port or you will get larger birds. This feeder has become the small bird hang-out, feeding station, and safe zone. Most of the grackles, starlings, and doves have moved on to greener pastures, ignoring the other open feeders. My cardinals, bluejays, mockingbirds, towhees stayed. I regularly see finches, chickadees, wrens, gnatcatchers, titmouse. So far, no sparrows in the feeder, but I do have a couple of small variety that should fit. Hoping juncos and buntings come back. Hope this provides you the info you need about this feeder.

Fantastic small-bird bird feeder
Have six of these now. Wanted feeder for smaller birds, finches, chickadees, etc. Started with 2, had to get used to unscrewing top and screwing back on, then bought 2 more. Bigger birds have to hang on outside the feeder and eat from the bottom tray. Finches, etc can get inside to eat. When the big birds tip the feeder with their weight the only seed that's lost is what they were able to access on the tray. Seems like it took the little guys a few days to decide they could trust the feeder but now it's the bird food court. So many birds all the time. Love these!!

Great Potential but so Flawed
I will say one positive thing first- this has the best squirrel proof lock on the top, I wish all feeders would use such a sturdy design to prevent squirrels from chewing their way into the feeder! Now, about the problems- I waited and observed this feeder a long time before reluctantly deciding I wasted my money. It has several fatal flaws. I am an experienced bird feeder with about 20 feeders so I know of what I speak. The caged openings for the small birds to go through to get to the seed are WAY too small, even my tiniest gold finches can’t and won’t enter this caged feeder. Also the bronze scrollwork around the feeder while ornate covers up the 2 upper perches so even if birds could enter the feeder you wouldn’t be able to see them and they would panic when turning around to leave because the scroll work blocks their exit. Finally, the floor or base of the feeder should be open. By having a solid base for the seeds to land on, the seeds get wet and rot at the bottom of the feeder with no way to escape. Alas, the plastic tube also just spontaneously cracked near the bottom even though nothing happened to it. This feeder is more for decoration than for birds. It’s a shame, if Heath made the grids ( caged openings) larger and made the base open grids also and made the whole thing larger without the scrollwork but kept the excellent squirrel lock at the top I would buy 10 of these! But as it is now it’s unfortunately useless.

Keeps big birds out
This is a great little feeder, to allow smaller birds to feed, while keeping large birds like black birds, starlings, off. Large male english sparrows have a hard time getting to this one too. Finches, titmouses, and other small birds love this. Takes awhile for them to figure out how to get in though.

It is squirrel proof...once modified!
Bought it for my black-capped chickadees after my last feeder was destroyed by the local squirrel army. They quickly went to work on this one and brought it down within a week by simply spinning it so much, the top cover came off. Don't get me wrong; I think the screwed top cover is a great idea...if the squirrels don't spend their whole day spinning the feeder. Then came version 2.0, my upgrade with a trusty coat hanger to bypass the top cover screw, and some mesh for the top holes which where bigger. And VOILÀ, the perfect bird feeder impervious to squirrels. There was one chipmunk that was able to go through the regular holes but he eventually gave up...or got too fat. It does the job now. Happy with purchase.

small birds wouldn't go in
Beautiful feeder, but the small birds wouldn't go in. Returned it and bought a different caged feeder which they love. i think the "squares" on the cage on this one are just too small.
