the kids love it
I needed a second hand to put it together. It is quite big and sturdy. Lots of play opportunities. It fits perfect with the wooden train set we have. The only thing missing was the bell. they requested a bunch of pictures & then sent the bell.

Good, but not great
Well packaged. Took 30 minutes to put together Christmas Eve. Had my father-in-law hold a few pieces along the way and my wife for about 3 minutes also at one point since they were both available. Could have done it without them but was really handy. So assembly I'd say was fairly easy. Fit of things is not as impressive. Put some spacer under the middle span of the elevated tracks to get them to align better, but still not as good as I had expected. Features are kinda oddly placed. The elevator would get played with more if the design was better, just kinda placed in there where they could get it? The crane was kinda the same. Guess you are just supposed to unload train to little area near the crane. The crane and elevator are not meant to interact. Kinda thought they tie those features together somehow. Got this for my 4 year old (youngest of 5 kids), but the other kids do play with it some. My 10 year old mentioned it would work better if there was a place for the train to turn around on the top layer and he's right. Our first big train set, we have a ton of tracks and trains and some smaller setups even a dedicated table that have gotten good play over the years, as such I was expecting more. Overall would say 3.5 rounding to 4 for their rating system. We snagged it at a low point back in Nov for $130. For the $170 they have it at now I wouldn't be very happy with the fit and functionality.

Very difficult to assemble and wobbly once complete
You will need to be very patient when assembling this item. It requires a lot of angling and matching, and is not especially durable. It looks cool when complete and appears to be a hit with my 4 year old.

doesn't live up to the Hape name
I got this for my child for his birthday. He loves trains and Hape is always a wonderful brand, so I had high hopes for this set. I first noticed upon unpacking the pieces from the box that a few of the boards were double printed. So I could clearly see where the image was printed incorrectly and then reprinted over. For what I paid it really shouldn't be like that. (not to mention places where the paint was peeling fresh out of the box) When assembling it I found some difficulty. It's almost like a 3D puzzle to put together, the pieces go one in the other. So while that seems like it would be simple, once most of it was together the directions will have you turn it over to screw it together on the bottom. So the whole thing fell apart a few times before I finally got all the pieces together. Then there's the top largest level. It has nothing holding it in place. My son (3) will often times put his weight on that level to move around or stand up and the whole thing flips up at him. It's very odd to me that this would be approved when all they needed was to place another screw or two in it. I reread the directions a few times to make sure I didn't miss it, but no, someone in design missed it. The last thing that I would say was a flaw is the crane. Super cute addition to it and probably my son's favorite part, but it's very top heavy and can't handle being pulled on or the whole crane comes down. There's nothing holding the crane in place, which isn't a bad thing (my son likes to move it around), but it needs to be weighted better. Overall a nice gift, good product. Not sure if it was worth the money I spent on it, though. And it definitely isn't up to the Hape name.

Not perfect, but still pretty great
We bought this for our 2 year old grandson. He is entranced with all things with wheels, and any interesting place to play with them. Bottom line, he absolutely loves this set. The details: First off, the things that make this a 4 star instead of a 5. Assembly took some time and was frustrating at moments, but overall it went together fine. It's an issue that the black plastic track portions don't really lock in, they just attach like puzzle pieces as do standard wooden Brio or Thomas train sets. This means they are frequently coming undone when being played with, and the trains cars are derailed. We are considering gluing them on and accepting that we will never take this thing apart again. Also, the crane piece falls off a lot when cars are pushed through it, as well as the waterfall. I think these parts should have a locking mechanism to hold them in place. Lastly, if you give this to a younger child, they will have difficulty turning the wheels on both crane and conveyor belt. We do that for him for now. Both require a bit of force. Now for the good things. This set has occupied and fascinated our little guy for hours. There are enough levels, spaces to park his little cars (which also ride on the train tracks from time to time) nooks and crannies and interesting moving bits, tracks that go in a variety of directions, doors and tunnels and bells that ring to keep your kid amused for some time. He goes back to this set every day, multiple times a day. He uses the trains that come with it, as well as another compatible set I bought him, his Hot Wheels cars, even animal figures for imaginative play in "his mountain". This was definitely a worthwhile purchase despite some design flaws. I wish I could find something similar with say, a jungle theme or a working farm.

Great wooden railway set
This is fantastic, truly something you can play with for hours and hours, it requires some difficult assembly though

Reasonable value, but plastic too fragile
We generally have had a great experience with Hape products - well the ones that are all wooden. This item came with some minor paint damage and a broken plastic coupler. When intended for a 3+, the plastic parts must be strong. On brief inspection, our broken coupler may have been caused at the factory(?) by over tightening a screw to the point of splitting the plastic. Now both points of attachment are broken, and connecting the plastic tracks to the main structure is quite precarious. I hope the review indicating that Hape cannot provide replacement parts is not true. Can you imagine returning a large (assembled) trainset because one plastic coupler was broken? I will try my best with Hape to get parts. Otherwise, I agree with other reviews about the crane - our 3.5 year old got very frustrated - while the magnet picked up the cars, the crane is not attached and falls off very easily - I might glue it . . .

Great quality, much fun
Like all the Hape stuff I've come across, this is solid as a rock. The kids love it and so do most adults.
