i like it
i only got this yesterday and i am already standing on it for about 25 seconds on the higher adjustment. i should maybe mention that im not really injured, but i did pop my knee out of place a few years back and it hasnt been the same since also im 120lbs. there is a popping noise when extended but i have music on and had to try to hear the pops. it doesnt affect the product. some people said they cant unscrew the bottom after using it for a while at the shortest setting and its probably because you accidentally tighten it when you swivel trying to keep your balance but all i had to do was flip it over put my foot on the part that screws up or down and push on it while twisting my foot. i just stood on it and turned. easy peasy. i think people are just being big babies with the complaints but i have only had it for a day so who knows. if youre the type of person to use noise as an excuse to not do your exercise dont buy it. i think its super fun though.

An Outstanding Balance Board!
It's excellent on it's own, but you get the most out of it if you refer to the DVD included in the package. Unlike the prior reviewer, we haven't had a problem with creaking. But then again, we live on the ground floor, use this on carpet, and I haven't tried extending/unscrewing the base yet. It has no problem carrying my weight (260 lbs) and I find it to be challenging, but not too much so at the easiest level. The base support in the middle can be unscrewed to allow for greater difficulty though at this point, I haven't done so and won't until I've mastered the beginning. This was originally purchased to improve my spouse's and my balance, but it can do so much more. Exercises in the DVD show how one can improve flexibility and prevent injury, particularly for runners, with this balance board. It is really solid. The board itself is wood with some anti-sliding footing on top. The base and threading is plastic, but appears to be very well made. I'm usually afraid of standing or sitting on some things as I'm concerned they'll break, but this doesn't worry me at all. I actually can't think of a bad thing to say about it. Someone might say they'd like it to be bigger, but, if you do that, it won't be as effective or totally ineffective with some of the exercises. It's what I had hoped and better due to the DVD. Cheers and Happy New Year (2010)!

Good product
I have a herniated disc at L5/S1. I'm trying to get my core strong without doing crunches and such (PT recommendation). This is one of the methods I'm using. There are pops and creaks that it makes, especially right out of the box. After a while they diminished though. I can't imagine how they'd create an adjustable base like this without that kind of thing. There's a crap load of pressure on that base. If they made the threads tighter it would be more expensive and harder to adjust. It's not going to break, it's just kinda noisy until you develop the balance to keep it from wobbling a lot. If you want to avoid that noise, the non-adjustable version will probably be your thing (I'd probably go with it myself if I bought again, I'll probably never adjust it). Be careful with this thing if you're using it for recovery exercises. It's very easy to overdo it. I did and spent the next couple days hoping I hadn't made it worse again...trying to avoid surgery. Probably not that great for someone injured that isn't already confident in their balance--after several years of MA I am pretty decent at it.

Overall I like it
I like that this is wood and not plastic, so it feels less cheap. Unfortunately, I also use mine to stretch my calves while standing, and found that after a week I had separated the textured black step pad from the board completely (from all my weight sliding in only 1 direction). I had to re-glue it with gorilla glue, so it is an easy fix, but not sure why they wouldn't begin with a stronger adhesive in the first place since it is meant for standing on. The bottom dome is plastic, and I haven't figured out how to adjust it (just haven't care enough to try), and it sometimes makes a creaking sound which I dislike. I just haven't been able to find the original old-school wooden ones anywhere! Overall it serves its purpose just fine.

If It Pops Real Loud Do This
I love it, but it needed 10 cents worth of love to get there. The big black plastic screw is just a little too loose in the fitting on the bottom of the board - this means the threads actually slip and make irritating popping sounds. Simple fix: unscrew the black plastic screw, layer up 4-6 pieces of plastic wrap larger than the the screw hole, screw the black plastic screw back in. The plastic wrap will keep the threads from slipping and no more bad popping. I ordered a couple of these boards because the first one I tried made really bad popping noises. All the boards had the same issues - it's a design flaw. That said, the height adjustment is nice and for 40 bucks + 10 cents worth of plastic wrap, it works great.

Quality materials, poor design
It was a great idea to make a balance board with adjustable height, and this feature is great. The board is made from quality plywood with a durable urethane finish and self-adhesive grippy material where your feet go. I used this board for a couple of weeks but decided to return it because there was a very loud popping noise that would occur while using it that was happening within the adjustable height screw threads. The concept of the adjustable height mechanism is fine but there needs to be a jam nut on the screw to keep it tight and prevent the popping noise. This is not just annoying - it is very annoying and very loud - to the point that I didn't want to use it any more because of the noise. I fixed the problem by making a big washer out of a scrap piece of 3/4" plywood and tightening the screw onto the washer, but with the washer in there the height was too high for my skill level.

creaks like crazy when you use it. Not sure how to make it not so noisy
