Wood Working on Easy mode.
As a beginner woodworker, I recently purchased the PORTER-CABLE Benchtop Jointer, Variable Speed, 6-Inch, and I have to say that it has been a game-changer for my woodworking projects. If you're just starting out in woodworking, I believe that this jointer is a critical tool to have in your arsenal. The variable speed feature of this jointer is particularly useful for beginners. It allows you to adjust the speed of the cutter head to match the type of wood you are working with, ensuring a smooth and accurate cut every time. The 6-inch size is also perfect for smaller woodworking projects, making it ideal for beginners who are still honing their skills. What I appreciate most about the PORTER-CABLE Benchtop Jointer is its ease of use. It is simple and straightforward to set up and operate, which is essential for beginners who may not have a lot of experience with power tools. The adjustable infeed and outfeed tables also make it easy to achieve precise cuts and smooth surfaces.

Very Good Benchtop Jointer
When I made an interstate move, I elected to sell the Jet stationary jointer that had served me well for many years. I have a lot less shop space now, so I had to go with a benchtop model as a replacement. After doing some research, it seemed that the variable speed of the Porter Cable jointer outweighed the lack of spiral/helical cutters. Some might consider the lack of a cast iron table a disadvantage, but I would rather have the lighter weight of the aluminum table since I'll be moving the tool on and off the bench. Setup was pretty easy. I just have a couple of quibbles with the manual. The unit I received had the cutter guard already installed, but the instructions include installation of the cutterhead guard as a step in setup. No big deal. Also, the manual shows four Phillips screws that have to be loosened to install the dust port. The unit I received had two Phillips and two hex screws. The hex screws were very tight, and the hex key included in the package was a bit small for the screws. I had a key that was a better fit among my tools and was able to loosen the screws, but it required quite a bit of torque. After I got the dust port installed, I was able to attach it to a Festool dust extractor hose with a universal adapter as shown in the photo. Dust collection seems to work pretty well. After squaring up the fence and testing it on scrap, I tried the jointer on a piece of 4/4 six inch wide flat sawn cherry that was pretty cupped. Per the recommendations in the manual, I jointed the edge at the lowest speed, and then one face at the highest. The face came out flat and square after four passes @ 1/64" as shown in the photo. Cutter marks were minimal. Finally, I'd recommend keeping the lower edge of the fence 1/16" or so above the table to decrease noise caused by vibration of the fence against the table.

Weekend Woodworking
The fence is not easy to adjust. Every time you tighten the lock it moves the angle. Table seems sticky. A little heavier than I thought it would be, but still movable for small shops.

I don't know how I ever did woodworking without this.
I'm retired from a career in technology and I took up woodworking as a hobby two or three years ago. I suppose I did what most beginners do - picture frames, planters, bandsaw boxes and lots of shop projects. But I just moved up to making outdoor furniture and without boards that have been squared and surfaced, the project suffers. This jointer has fixed all of that. Solid tool that with very little assembly is set up and ready to go. I find it to be very accurate, easy to use and the speed control allows you to adjust speed of the cutter head for different species of wood. Yes, it's limited to 6" for the width but I seldom use anything wider so it's not an issue for me. Twisted, cupped and bowed boards from the lumber yard are easily made flat and square with just a few passes. It only has two knives so it's not as great as a jointer with a spiral or helical cutting drum but for about $300 it will get you in the game and make an excellent addition to your addictive hobby! Just FYI... I have a neighbor with a planer which is needed to make perfectly squared boards but chances are, you'll be able to correct a lot of issues in your boards using just a jointer and a table saw. I love this tool!

Worked great for 11 months then stopped!
I'm very pleased with PORTER Cable's solution to my broken jointer. It had only a few days left on it's 1 year warranty when I requested a solution to my problem. I explained that I had access to their service center, but it would cost me $50 in gas to make the necessary two round trips to the service center. Within a couple of days they shipped me a new jointer. I'm assuming they'll want the broken jointer sent back to them, but I haven't heard from them yet. This response to my broken jointer problem was amazing and as a result I'm a PORTER CABLE customer for ever! It worked great for 11 months then quit while joining a piece of wood. It just stopped and I checked the breaker, wiggled the switch and shook the jointer, nothing. The closest repair center is an hour away, 6 gallons of gas round trip times two. So I'm out $50 in gas just to fix it and it is within the one year warranty. It worked great until it stopped. So I guess I'll run it over to the service center and spend the 50 bucks.

Accurate when calibrated
Only problem with this jointer is that it only makes true 90 degree joints after quite a bit of tinkering with the fence. If you are able to get the fence set nicely, then it produces quality jointed lumber. I have not tried it on hardwood yet, but it eats up pine and fir with ease. The large dust chute also makes dust capture highly effective. I only use a shop vac and still get a dust-free work surface.

Wish I bought one sooner
Now that I have a jointer I can't believe I went so long without one. What a useful time saving tool and worth every penny. Cuts cleanly and the adjustable speed is nice. If you plan to be jointing boards longer than about five feet you'll definitely need to build an infeed/outfeed extension, but five feet or less I've had success with just the jointer as is.

Nice jointer
I had this jointer a few years back and ended up giving it to one of my sons. Decided to get another one. I like the Porter Cable for the variable speed. The unit arrived on time and I unboxed it to get it set up. My only complaint is that one of the small hex bolts that needed to be removed to install the blade lock was SO tight that it was impossible to remove without ruining it. I had another on hand to replace it, so not that big of a deal. Just a bit frustrating and a wasted a bunch of time messing with it. Set up was straight forward. Instructions are good and easy to follow. Setting up the fence properly took a bit of time, but easy enough to do. A bit of advice…keep the blade cover (basically a piece of cardboard) in place until you’ve finished all adjustments. I ignored the warning and took it off before I was done. I learned first hand just how sharp those blades are.

Great Tool. Great Price. Great Service.
Ordered this from Amazon at the same time as i ordered planer. I have no fear ordering these types of tools from amazon as their delivery is on time, in perfect working order. Love this tool. Out of the box was ready to go and started squaring up some left over 2 by cedar i had from a deck project a few years back. Worked really well for the 30 odd foot boards i pushed through. Would recommend this to the home DIY / woodworker looking to build better projects. I have at least three more projects planned where this will be used.
