Solid unit have patience

Let’s get dislikes out of the way: Garmin gets and F- at applications good Lord takes 4 apps on my Mac just to update and add free maps and plot routes plus two on my cell phone. There’s very little workflow on why and which to use for what. The default non-paid topo maps are not set to have map details set to “more” or “most” which are buried deeeeeeeeeeep in map settings. This single default setting I think causes massive poor feedback by Garmin first time owners. Loading free maps is a nightmare at best, using base camp if a pain in the penis best case. Base camp crashed on me 3 times to add a future hiking route about 7mi long. It’s just… bad. UI of the unit itself really needs a complete overhaul this company need a more Apple like approach, take a look at their source code APIs it’s terrible and you can tell that they are hardware folks trying to do good hardware with crappy softy on top. The good is also very prevalent, laser accuracy with multi band. People don’t seem to realize multi band gets you on avg 6’ of accuracy (that’s the width of ur arms stretched out) from L1 and L5 bands that have accuracy validation. Routing once done works great. Free maps are pretty awesome once you spend a lot of time figuring them out. Text notifications from ur mobile device is pretty sweet. Compass and multi axis sensors get u very good elevation precision. I have major piece of mind once I took 4-6hrs to install and google searches to figure it all out. I’d challenge Garmin to get better senior level software developers and get their act together with multi apps to handle one device. Once that comes about with better and small tech, I’d be very excited to see what happens!

The most accurate Garmin GPSr

If you don't care about a large screen and navigation, this is the GPSr for you. Perfect for scientific fieldwork and exploration, which is why I got it. My previous GPSr's were a GPSMap76, which burnt up in a housefire, and then an eTrex as a very cheap replacement. This is far, far superior to either. Regular accuracy is <2m, and incredibly, it came with a detailed road map of Jamaica, where I live and use it - even includes the most obscure, unnamed, minor roads and lanes. All the controls are with buttons, which makes it much easier to use in the bush than a touch-screen (you can do it with one hand). You can, of course, add your own custom maps (a tip on that - don't use the Google Earth method, just open the kml in a text editor and do the georeferencing manually). I'm very pleased with it. Clunky handheld GPS

Bought this thinking it would help up my accuracy for mapping. This particular model doesn't have a solid compass. It takes a while for your position to update to show which direction you are facing. It takes atleast 20-30 steps in one direction to really tell which way your going. My cellphone is highly more accurate than this unit so I can definitely say this was a huge waste of money. I brought this out to Colorado and yellowstone and my phone still had better accuracy and was faster and was much easier to use. Maybe buy a better unit with a better compass and updates position faster? These things aren't cheap. Can't believe I paid $300 for this. I put custom maps on the unit. This process was a little hard to do since you have to watch a few YouTube videos on how to do so. Don't buy maps from garmin, it's huge scam when you can get open street maps on this unit for free. You can also put kmzs on here from caltopo with is helpful. Better yet, just buy a premium subscription from caltopo for $30 bucks and your phone will be much better than this GPS.

Not as Advertised

Be aware that the screenshots you are seeing on Amazon and on the Garmin page DO NOT match those of the product in hand. The satellite page and maps page show a user interface that is crisp and well layed out. You will see something quite different in hand. Thinking it was my device, I updated all software and then called Garmin who then confirmed what you see on the device is different than what is advertised. Not good. That might not matter to you, but is important to know before you buy. Software (updated) is also buggy - could not get deleted waypoints to stop displaying on the map unless I reboot the device (among other problems).

Great GPS

I'm very pleased with the quality and function of this GPS. I purchased the Garden TOPO 2009 NE US Map microsSD card so I'd get as close as the USGS topo map as possible, and it seems fine. My only slight problem was figuring out how to use Base Camp which I downloaded to work with tracks on my computer.

SUPER FAST, SUPER ACCURATE!!!

i HAVE A GPSMAP 64SX, AND THE 65S IS HANDS DOWN FASTER, AND MORE ACCURATE! LATEST 3.7 SOFTWARE SOLVES SOME OF THE ISSUES, NO CUSTOM MAP ISSUES HERE. I AM ALWAYS 1.8 METER ACCURACY (6 FOOT) VS 9-15 FEET ON THE 64SX.

Robusto e confiável

Excelente qualidade de sínal. Manuseio simples. Não consegui baixar arquivos gpx via Bluetooth, mas foi fácil via usb. Como todo gps, exige aprendizado. Se não tiver experiência com manuseio, chance de se perder é razoável.
