Easiest to clean pet fountain for sure
This is one almost-perfect pet fountain! To compare, I currently have aCat It Fresh and Clear Small Drinking Fountain - Cat It 50053 and aPetmate Deluxe Fresh Flow Pet Fountain Medium, White as well as a contraption using an in-tank aquarium filter and a ceramic casserole dish. All are currently being used by cats. I got the Big Max for our dog and a dog we started fostering. This fountain is basically two ceramic pieces, the bowl and the riser where the fountain emanates. A triangular plastic case with suction feet houses the similarly shaped filter and a pump, both hidden from view under the riser. Aesthetically this item does not look like it's for your pets but rather like an elegant desktop fountain. It's very quiet, with just faint bubbling noises. There are so few parts it's a breeze to clean compared to my Petmate Fresh Flow with all its pieces and sharp nooks and crannies. You'll still want a little brush to clean out the pump though, of course. I have a few bones to pick. First, I wish they offered it in white ceramic; that way stray lint and dog spit wouldn't show up as much. Second, I do end up having to clean it every other day because dog spit seems to persistently collect under the riser and float on the surface of the water, which is unattractive. So, in my situation the small filter may not be adequate. One thing I've done with the other fountains is to use additional homemade filters to keep the water extra clean. I use aquarium filtering material and sew it up into little pillows stuffed with activated charcoal. These pillows go into the water holding tanks and I find I can actually go 2-4 weeks without having to clean the fountains out. UPDATE (3 weeks later): I made the filter pillow and found it didn't work well hidden underneath the riser. I took out the Pioneer filter to try to increase the water throughput. IMHO, the filter is too small and the pump is undersized for the amount of water the fountain holds. The filter pillow now just floats around in the bowl and keeps the water clean enough for about a week. I'm considering rigging the unit with a slightly larger pump and not using the the plastic case (which could eventually harbor bacteria). UPDATE (4 months later): I swapped out the underpowered pump for a slightly higher powered version to get more water moving. This also meant I was able to lose the plastic housing for the pump and filter. I cut a small length of PVC tubing to go from the pump to the riser opening. Finally, I put a small ceramic egg cup over the riser hole so the water doesn't spurt out in a big fountain. With the increased GPM of the new pump, the bowl had to be shimmed in the back so the water flows to the front. The filter pillow I use can be hidden underneath the riser. The bowl still requires cleaning every 1-2 weeks, and it is still very much a pain to get the pump lined up with the riser hole. I may take a look at the Glacier Point water bowls - they are ugly but probably work well and also chill the water; I also saw Petmate has a new UV light watering dish that seems promising.

Has HUGE FLAW. Requires a lot of maintenance.
The "pioneer ceramic drinking fountain big max" has its uses on certain occasions but overall it is impractical. I have had the fountain for over a month. Don't get me wrong. The fountain is beautiful, relatively quiet, and so far I haven't had any mechanical issues. Just make sure the water doesn't go down too low because the pump needs to be working only when it is pumping water. If it is on and no water is being flowed into or out of the motor pump, it will likely die quickly. The MAIN critical FLAW of the drinking fountain is the following: clean up. I have to clean the fountain everyday, which considering I have to soak the motor in hydrogen peroxide since I can't get into the crevices, makes this a huge hassle. I have a Shi Tzu and a cat. They both drink from the water fountain. The cat is a relatively clean drinker. However my Shi Tzu puts her hair and mouth into the water after eating something. So the bowl instantly becomes dirty and filled with food particles and hair. The filter is not going to clean the water or keep it clean. It does relatively nothing after my shi tzu drinks from the fountain. The truth is I would be stupid and negligent if I didn't clean the bowl at least everyday. If you simply rinse with water and don't soak the motor parts in h peroxide or soap, you will likely develop a yellow slimy film. It will be difficult to clean around the crevices and impossible to clean the slime in the motor unit itself as opposed to the white plastic cover. The bowl is huge.Takes a long time to fill it. And is heavy when it is filled. This is not good for elderly people since I am in college and male and find the bowl heavy and clumsy. I have to be super careful not to spill the water from the bowl and also make sure not to drop it cause it seems to get slippery when wet. Regardless of whether you have a cat or dog, you have to clean this everyday which is a hassle. Bacteria builds up quickly and daily. With a normal bowl, it is smaller and easier to clean and fill with water. The amount of water saved compared to the big fountain may make a difference to some people. For example, the big ceramic holds a lot of water compared to a normal small bowl. When I clean the big fountain bowl I toss out all the dirty water in it and it's a lot. With the smaller normal bowl I had, the amount of water thrown away is way less and thus the amount of water needed to fill it up is less as well. *** The fountain has motorized parts which require cleaning and being dipped into a cleaner for 20 minutes. Must clean everyday. This is impractical and takes too much time/energy. If you clean every week or god forbid every two weeks, you are inoculating you precious pet with bacteria and pathogens. Don't be foolish! The best way to use the drinking foundation is on "special occasions" like on those days when you will not be home all day and therefore won't be there to fill and clean the water bowl. When you are home, I would recommend turning off the fountain and using the normal water bowl. *** I don't regret buying the fountain. However, if I knew what I now know, I would not have bothered buying the fountain.

Lousy design!
Same size pump for 3 different size of bowls?!! I purchased and returned this product 3 times now. QA sounds like an unknown / unnecessary and costly process to this manufacture. Therefore, before using it, fully investigate the condition and look for any small or BIG crack / track / scratch in or outside of both bowls. Even one little tiny crack can and will hurt your pet -- that includes the "invisible to human's eyes" scratches. Just noticed there is also no word of lead-free anywhere on the box or manual or even vendor's web site. So, unless the vendor makes an official comment here or update the product description, I do NOT recommend buying or using it anymore.

I love how big it is
I love how big it is, it's also quite heavy so pretty hard to knock over. One of my 3 dogs started to drink from it before it was even plugged in! Happy to report that they now use the fountain instead of drinking from the toilet :) the only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is the fact that it isn't tall enough. We're gonna have to built a step to raise it from the ground as 2 of my dogs are elderly and have issues reaching so low. ETA: I've had this for 2 years now, the dogs still love it. The pump gave out within the first 5 months, since they are so expensive on amazon, i bought a cheap knock off on a chinese website, it's been running ever since. Found out recently that replacement parts (pump, plastic case for the pump..) are way cheaper if you order directly from the pioneer pet website.

If my dog is happy, I'm happy
Although it took me a couple of minutes to figure out how to place the component together, once we figured it out it works great. I also ordered the separate brush kit for cleaning the dog slime and some extra filters. My pooch started drinking out of the garden fountain we purchased this summer and as soon as we stored it for winter she got fussy about drinking water to the point where the only got liquid she was getting was the water that we added to her food. She also ate a lot of snow but that was it. We thought we would give this a try- porcelain is nice- more hygienic although the pump components are plastic so we are careful to clean as much as we can. And she likes it! Yay! She prefers the pump on full- there is a tiny switch on the pump I didn't notice at first that controls the flow. I imagine the porcelain part is dishwasher safe for the odd extra cleanse. Pump is very quiet but be careful to keep the water topped up as the pump sits level with the basin so a low level will overwork the pump and cause noise and overheating. Also, because it is porcelain and fairly heavy, be careful when picking it up to clean as the dog slime will make that little sucker slippery. It is a very classy dish overall and looks very nice in our kitchen- glad we picked this one for our fussy furry friend

Great First Fountain, Cats Love It
This is the first pet fountain we've tried and we love it! We're a multi-cat household so we got this larger version in hopes it would keep up with all of them. It's a beautiful design. Easily tucked away and matches existing decor in our home. The ceramic is heavy so the bowl isn't easily moved which is a plus and it's easy to clean. Cleaning out the filter is also quite simple. It's quiet, but it almost seems like the motor is insufficient to pump the water at times. Like mentioned in other reviews the water slowly flows/gurgles in the top part and you can barely tell if it's on. We've recently had issues with the motor not being able to push the water from the bottom up into the top "fountain" part, and thus causing a slow leak by the water dripping along the interior of the upper portion of the dish to the floor. Not a big issue if you have the fountain on a waterproof mat or tile floor, but something to be aware of all the same. However we've had ours for over a year and this is the first issue we've had. We're currently looking to purchase another fountain since this one is such a hit with the cats (prefer over regular bowl now) and we'd like them to have one on each floor. We will likely buy the teardrop version from the same company as it seems to be the same fountain we love minus the potential for the leaks. A wonderful product!
