Book ends

These are old fashioned, but boy do they work. The slide right under those heavy books and stay put. Just like I remember. I am using one on my cookbook collection and the other on the warranty/instruction booklets for all the stuff we have. Each have a cabinet board on one side so I only needed two. Best money I have spent in quite a long time. Couldn't be happier. They are black painted metal. There is a soft, non-skid bottoms that covers the entire bottom, not just the pokey part. Very secure support for heavy books.

OK for bookends that don't need to be beautiful for supporting notebooks and taller books

To be fair I'm comparing these to identical-in-shape and finish bookends I bought 20 years ago and which are good examples of what this type of bookend should be like. The clear difference is that these new ones are in every way inferior to the old ones. They are OK, but not great, hence the 3-star rating. I tried to buy something close to what I had but I don't think it's possible anymore. Quality office products are becoming harder to find at any price. In another 20 years will I look back and find these new ones are better than what's then available? I hope not, but that seems to be the trend. Stiffness is reduced due to 20% thinner steel (0.04" vs. the older ones at 0.05"), and more shallow stiffener ridges. Are they stiff enough? I guess, but are a lot more springy than the old ones with the same notebooks pressing against them. They haven't permanently bend past 90 degrees yet despite their easy tendency to bend in use but I suspect they will at some point, the biggest problem with these I see. Finish isn't as nice. The old ones have a very uniform luster finish that is also durable. The new ones come with scratches in the paint, and incomplete and rough paint in places. Not a uniform finish. Does it matter for books on the shelf? Usually not... these are typically utilitarian and unseen. Since they're black and largely covered by books the defects aren't obvious from a distance. The padding is a foamy rubber, which is grippy but which isn't fully glued/attached at the edges and tends to catch and roll up. Will it last? I don't know, seems vulnerable to coming off if slid around a lot. Bottom line, they seem expensive for what they are, yet are mediocre in most respects. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything better in this size and shape.

Great for light weight books.

These are great for lightweight books, but that's not why I bought them. I originally bought them to stop my resource books from sliding down which are around 430ish pages and knocking things off my shelf on my computer desk. When I went to use them the metal was actually bending so I had to put one in the middle and one on the end, but even still the one on the end is bending a bit. It would be really helpful to add how much weight these can actually support.

Size, weight, design were all fine. My only complaint is that the material under the bookends that is meant to protect the shelf from being scratched by the bookend is very thin and not well adhered to the metal. Glue repaired it, but its hard to say how well the repair will hold up, particularly because the fabric is so thin and porous.
