Great pole for the price!

I bought this rod for a icefishing trip on Lake of the Woods. It worked great fir walleyes. I will definitely be buying another one!

New Slip Bobber Rod for Minnesota Walleyes

This is the first ice fishing rod I've ever purchased from the internet, but with covid weirdness going on and my local sporting goods stores woefully understocked, I rolled the dice...and won. I realize everyone has their own tastes and ice fisher people are an odd lot to begin with, but to give you some help with a clearer idea of what you're looking at, here's my two cents. When I fish for walleyes through the ice, I use one rod rigged with a slip bobber while jigging in a second hole with my flasher and a slightly lighter rod. This HMG bobber rod will be rigged with a #8 Gamakatsu Octopus hook, a small red bead for color, a 14 inch leader of 8 pound Berkley Vanish, a Northland Tackle swivel, and a balsawood Thill bobber with a rubber stop weighted in a manner that will allow a 2.5 to 3.5 inch fathead chub or shiner minnow pull it down a couple inches. I use much nicer reels in open water season, but I've grown accustomed to Shimano r1000s in winter because of their size, reliability, and rear drag. The reel is spooled with 6 pound Berkley Cold Weather line...NOT micro ice. Also, the 8 pound leader is for enhanced abrasion resistance and fewer re-ties. This rod is not "noodle-y" and has a fairly stiff backbone with a relatively sensitive, flexible tip. It's well-balanced. As far as final fit and finish is concerned, it evoked a spontaneous an "ahhhhhh..." from me when I pulled from the box. It's a really NICE fishing rod. I've been fishing for walleyes in the 1 to 5 pound range through the ice in northern MN for 40 years, and this absolutely checks my boxes for a slip bobber / live bait rod. I wouldn't use it to deliberately target big lake trout or northern pike, but I believe this unit could handle the incidental larger fish just fine with proper diligence. I feel that it could also be adapted to angling for larger perch and crappies due to the excellent sensitivity. I hope this was helpful - good luck, and watch that ice.

Nice little rod but

It is a good looking and seems like it will be ok . The trouble I have is the reels I use. I use Diawa gold Mini Might spinning reels ....fantastic little ice reels that I have been using for 50 yrs that have silk smooth drags. The reels are to small for the seat.

Fenwick quality through and through.

Fenwick HMG rods are very good quality and this one is no exception. The length of this rod is perfect for ice fishing and detects the slightest nibbles. Although I’ve only caught trout in the one to two pound range, this rod brings them through the ice with no issues. I’m hopefully going to see how it works on larger fish next trip out. ????????

Medium heavy action is perfect

I have several freshwater Fenwick rods and this was my first time buying a Fenwick ice rod and nothing to say other than quality! Fenwick makes awesome rods that have never let me down. It is very comfortable with the cork handle. If you want a quality ice rod at a good price point definitely recommend Fenwick.

Impressive rod for the money.

Well worth the spend. I ordered the 25” light action. Rated for 2-6 lb. test. Was concerned about that since it wasn’t specified in the specs or description. Can’t wait to get this out on the ice by far better quality than any other near this price.

Well Made

Excellent rod...bought two. A bit on the stiff for small brook trout but excellent for larger rainbow and Kokanee. I use an old fly reel with this rod. The base of the reels are a bit thick for the rod but works. Will look at buying a spinning reel to go with these rods.

Sensitive and quality

Cant go wrong with a Fenwick rod. the graphite is light and sensitive. I found that the handle did not fully tighten on the foot of my small ULTRA light reel . I just went up to a light weight reel and all is good. All my rods are HMG GRAPHITE. love them.!
