Check Appliances and Insulation, Amuse Your Cats, and Hunt for Ghosts
We absolutely love Extech's mini infrared thermometer. You can check temps close up or at a distance, using the built-in laser pointer to target the area you want to examine. The thermometer itself seems rugged and versatile. (I've already dropped it several times without any problems.) We have a large nearly-new toaster oven that has been problematic from the beginning because it doesn't heat evenly. Neither of us could ever quite figure out the best places to place food - from frozen lasagne to cupcakes - to get it to bake evenly. We used this thermometer to pinpoint the areas with the most heat and we haven't burned a single cookie since. We've also used it over pots of water on the stove to estimate how long it will be before the water boils, and to check a torn spot on our refrigerator gasket to see if it needed replacement or could wait. We are doing some remodeling and have used the infrared thermometer to figure out where our air leaks are - it worked like a champ. We also used it to check our water heater's pilot light after a windstorm - it gets blown out some of the time. We checked it with this device (instead of lying flat on the patio cement) and it told us the pilot was alive and warm so that we could take showers without fear of getting caught with shampoo in our hair and no hot water. And - it's instant playtime for our cats. They love chasing the red light. (But be cautious - like all lasers, this shouldn't point at a pet's eyes - it could damage them. I wouldn't let the kiddies play with it either, for the same reason.) Finally, you can hunt down cold (or hot) spots and find out if there's a normal source by following the temperature to the source. We had a hot spot off and on in our bedroom that just seemed to float around under the window and we were able to use this thermometer to finally figure out that it was something in the wiring of an air conditioner. I also took the thermometer to a private residence that is considered "haunted" by the homeowner. It has several "cold spots" that happen regularly. When the homeowner called to tell me she had a large one active in one of the bedrooms, I grabbed the thermometer and headed over. The thermometer quickly found the cold spot - but there was nothing to follow. It just hung there in mid-air, a blob without any apparent source. I don't know if that makes the house haunted, but it was decidedly odd and remains unexplained. I then checked two other areas where she complains of cold spots and found insulation leaks. This sturdy thermometer is well built and very accurate. Whether you use it to detect insulation leaks, appliance problems, automotive work, or anything else, it's an excellent choice. Four stars because it uses a non-standard battery, and when it comes time to replace it, I'll be annoyed about that.

A dependable, consistent thermometer - slightly more complex than this project-doing homeowner needed.
Over all I am very happy with the utility and design of this thermometer. I initially used it in my basement, where the former owner put up about half of the amount of drywall board that the area needs and covered the other half over with a mix of board and really awful wood (?) paneling. With this thermometer I can tell before stripping down the wall covering whether or not the area is insulated. I have an older thermometer as well and I found this one to be a little sturdier and more consistent. I also did use this a few times for a meat thermometer. It's plenty accurate for that (I used the attachment) but you really don't need something this complex to read meat temps. The only reason I'm deducting a star is because there a) isn't a way to clip the attachment onto the actual instrument and so I fear we will eventually lose it and b) I would really prefer if the controls were a bit more intuitive. You definitely have to read the manual to figure out how to use this, even on a basic level.

Laser beams are always good
Always wanted one of these. Seems well-made and accurate, actually attractive and is comfortable to operate. Like others, I used it to check out air leaks and I also used it to check my truck's heater vents as a mouse plugged it up after it was blended in the heater motor. Don't worry animal lovers, it was inadvertent and it pays me back every day with everlasting stench. My brother used it to verify some temperature issues on a race car. It will not act as an anti-aircraft gun against flying insects, but is fun to check out how steady your hands are. The cat does not chase the light around, but it also shares its food side by side with birds which have learned not to fear it. It is their pet. I had to take off a star because the separate surface contact sensor and wire are going to end up in a drawer, forgotten along with many other attachments for other things. Should be able to stow this stuff in the handle.

Must have in toolbox
Every home owner should have one of these things. They're incredibly useful to quickly and efficiently check temperatures. It read accurately and I was able to use this to see when my fridge/ac stopped working to troubleshoot my problems

Excellent Thermometer
Great item. I have another that I have used for a long time and this one stacks up against it degree by degree. I used it to check the temperature around my vents and the extech thermometer was as accurate as the InfraRed Thermometer I tested it against. I got a steady reading. I then went to go and cook something. I dont have a decent way to measure the temperature on my stove and Idont like burning things to I use my thermometer often. The Extech worked fine for this as well. I measured my freezer just to be a completist and the temperature was fine in there as well. I was able to measure temperatures from about 20 degrees Fahrenheit to about 500 degrees Fahrenheit accurately on the Extech and was happy with how it works. It has easy to use buttons and I just really like the machine. I would have no issues getting this for myself or a friend if they needed specific temperatures.
