Great Light!
Purchased 5.5 years ago. Running it for safety purposes (high viz) on road-bike I ride for cardio during daylight hours on street and bike-trails. Lotta miles. Battery still holding a good charge for at least 6-hours riding with light on strobe. Zero issues. Cover to charging port standing up to wear&tear. Can't ask for more.

Cygolite Metro 500 USB Bicycle Headlight
I recently started bicycling into work and found that as the sun was rising later in the morning that I was going to need a light if I was to get into work safetly. After browsing around on the internet, I heard tons of awesome reviews about theCygolite Metro 420 Lumen USB Rechargeable Bicycle Headlight, Black, One Size and was about to order one up. Amazon then suggested that I move up to the latest model for just a couple more dollars so that's what I did. When I got the light originally, it had it written on the box that the light comes discharged and that it requires at least 5 hours of charging before you should use it. I put it on the included charging cable (plugged into my computer to charge it slowly) and within 30 minutes it showed that it was fully charged. There is one single button on the light that is illuminated when the light is on. The button also blinks when charging and stays illuminated when fully charged. This light has several different modes for pretty much all situations: low, medium, high, DayLightning(tm), SteadyPulse(tm), and walking mode. I use SteadyPulse(tm) most of the time as it keeps the light on high and flashes every second or so to make yourself more visible to oncoming cars. I found that the DayLightning(tm) mode was bright enough to give myself a headache when I tried using it. It does increase the output of the light to 600 lumens when it pulses so that could be a reason why I got a headache. The other mode that I find myself using a lot is the walking mode which is just a normal light that is comparable to a flashlight that you would pick up at the store. Very useful for when you are camping and biking and you would like to only carry one flashlight. While the description says that it has side ports for increased visibility from the sides, I really only provides enough light that would be visible if it was pitch black outside for you to be able to see it easily (you'll notice the beam of light from the front long before you notice the side ports). In terms of battery life, my ride into work is about 30 minutes so I have never run out of battery. Looking at the Cygolite website, it gives the following information for battery life: Med (350 lm): 2:15 hrs High (500 lm): 1:30 hrs Low (80 lm): 10 hrs SteadyPulse(tm): 3 hrs DayLightning(tm): 6 hrs Walking: 30 hrs Pros: 1) Modes- Lots of different modes for just about any situation that you need. 2) Bright- The headlight does an awesome job at illuminating your path. 3) Battery life- It seems to be very good. I still have yet to run out of battery so I will report back when I find out how much life you get out of each charge. 4) Compact size- It is a fairly small light so it helps keep the clutter down on your handbars which is something that I really like. 5) Solid construction- It feels very well built and solid. I haven't crashed or ridden in the rain yet so I can't judge it on those aspects but it does feel very well built. Cons 1) Battery level indicator- Would be nice to have a battery level indicator. It only has one light that shows if the light is being charged or if it is fully charged. 2) No wall charger- It would be nice for it to have a wall charger since you need to plug this into USB. There aren't really any recommendations as to what kind of charger to use (0.25 amps, 1 amp, etc.) so I have just been plugging it into my computer to trickle charge it to prevent damage from occuring to the battery. Overall Impression I would highly recommend this light to anyone who is getting into bicycling and wants a high performance light for a very good price. There are several modes for pretty much any riding situation that you might be in whether you are on a busy road, a mountain bike trail, or a secluded road. There are some things that would be nice to have on this light such as a battery level indicator but that is asking for quite a bit considering that this light already has lots of features and is an awesome deal already.

Great light, Modifications I'm considering.
So far, this has been a great light, its mid brightness is more then adequate to navigate paths at full speed in the middle of the night with no other light sources (street, house, etc.), its top brightness is almost too bright, and luckily the steadypulse is mid bright lasting for 3hrs and plenty of time for a 40mile night ride. I wish there were more steadypulse settings then just the one, and some of the others are kind of cumbersome when you are only trying to switch from steadypulse to a lower steady. One of the things I noticed is that its mid bright steadypulse was too bright for other oncoming riders kind of blinding them, just like a car on a unlit road with your brights, but for me to switch to a lower brightness was nearly impossible to cycle through all the modes in time before they passed you before you now needed it back up bright to medium to see adequately again yourself. After a few times of playing that game I finally ended up slapping my light to shine on the right of the path until I passed them and realigned it when they were by me. Probably not the ideal situation as I am sure it will wear out the mount pivot and start flopping around wherever it wants eventually. It needs a momentary switch (preferably external thumb toggle) I can hit to dim it until I hit the switch again to bring it back up to mid brightness just like a car. It could use a rainproof bottle battery connection for rides that are going to last more then the 3hrs it says the mid level has, although I haven't had it run out of juice on me yet. I have noticed that, while charging, the light will allow you to turn it on which is great as a lot of other lights won't allow use while charging...I think I can rig an external bottle battery pack and silicon seal a pigtail into the charging port to lead to a self made rainproof connection if I find myself needing that much juice. Or...just buy a second one of these lights and switch them out when one dies. Something I don't know and need to test is whether the light, when it is charging, and the light on, if there is an internal isolation that only allows an -on state- or -charging state- vs a simultaneous -on- and -charging- state because that would matter a whole lot and make the point of the bottle battery moot if it was the former. I am contemplating making an external thumb switch and soldering it parallel into the lights existing switch as the switch is resistant to accidental bump while in your bag or whatnot which is great, but when mounted on your handlebars the switch is a little bit forward of the mounts apex so that when you are finger fumbling the switch while riding and pressing, it tends to push the light downward eventually that might have been avoided if the switched had been placed a little further back either on or behind the apex. All things considered, this is so far for me (4mo) and by other reviews a great light for only $40 and its shortcomings are potentially very easily overcome as described above, in fact, thats kind of key with this light, that it is constructed in a way that you can take it apart and modify it easily vs other lights that are one and done factory glue sealed, and again, that charging while in use (if it works like I think) is a biggie that many other lights don't have. When I saw its cousin the cygolite dart 210 at REI, the staff who are a bunch of outdoor bike nuts typical of the Portland area couldn't stop talking about how great it was, and they are pretty honest folks, the only problem is that at the time they wanted some $38 or so for 210 lumens when amazon offered the metro 700 lumens for about the same price kind of a no brainer.

Bright, but needs design tweaks
The mounting bracket is a pain to attach to larger diameter bars and is easily removed by a potential thief. Also, the charging port is not a micro-USB like most. Means you have to keep their cable (which is a foot too short) to charge the light.

Cygolite Metro 600

Perfect!
Very bright strobe for daylight commute. Night mode is a continuous light with strobe which is perfect to get noticed and still see in front of you. I used to have a 75 lumens light and in daylight it was not enough. Cars didn't notice me in my Montreal downtown commute. Now they do, I noticed the difference. I had to add a rubber ring from my previous lamp to it for the fit to be solid enough. I could have used a rubber band.
