Screwy testing on this Curt 51140 Brake Controller
I hook up this unit, Placed a match book to hold Brake controller slider on, should have power going through the blue wire when slider held on for testing purpose?, Went to back plug to see if it was getting power, and nothing on tester, this was driving me crazy, I went back read all the instructions and it says nothing about it?? all it gave me was what letter's that will display on controller?, to me meant nothing because I'm check to see if my wire job is correct. I wanted to know if I'm getting power to back plug?, not what display will display?. I usually work by myself, like most people do. I went into cab ( 1996 Dodge Van), I placed a tester on blue wire and slid manual slider over to right a second went by and testing light came on, "Halleluiah" then went off after 5 seconds, and CC showed up on Brake Controller display?. I went back to instructions and it says this is part of calibration once trailer is hooked up. I have not bought a trailer yet. I want to make sure the system works first. To me if the power goes out after 5 seconds, what's going to happen if I have a trailer hooked up???? Curt needs more instructions on testing these units. UPDATE Nov 21st 2013, I finely bought a trailer, hooked it up, and as I already knew my wiring job was perfect. The Controller worked GRATE, after much research and speaking to the manufacture for 20 minutes, with them assuring me it would work with Anti-lock Brakes, I adjusted to L1 and CC came on. It indeed work as they explained. However they also agreed sale on these units are weak, and they are right up there with the more expensive controllers but are price low because of weak sales. Its hard to believe B S when you hear it, However I'm like Mikey I tried it and I like it. Well Done Curt. I should give you five stars but like you told me, you agreed they need to disclose in the box, the testing on wire systems better as far as these units, work and are concern. So some poor Joe doesn't tear his wiring job apart because he doesn't see power going to his brake at the rear of his Vehicle. You at Curt need to disclose the Quarks. A Heads Up would be nice?

no mount bracket
Shown with mounting bracket, but when delivered, no bracket. Very disappointed

Not as easy to install as it should be.
Easy to install, yes, but... The tiny little screws that hold the unit to the bracket have - tinier still - little rubber washers that are quite a challenge to get all lined-up so the unit can be screwed to the bracket. Don't even try to do this with the bracket mounted to the vehicle. I recommend mounting the bracket to the vehicle, then removing the bracket, attaching the unit to the bracket, then re-mounting the entire assembly to the vehicle. DO get the wiring adapter harness for you vehicle. Plug and play was a breeze. The wiring harness is quite long and requires zip ties that are supplied with the unit, but they are quite short, and I ended up using longer ones just to make it easier to get together. Lastly, there seems to be a well known issue when first plugging it it, without a trailer attached, that you will get two dashes in the readout and it will not start working. A quick Internet search revealed this known issue, and simply unplugging the unit and then re-plugging it in, with the trailer connected, will reset the unit and it will begin its calibration mode. After that, the thing worked wonderfully. Our trailer is quite heavy so we have had to increase the base setting from the suggested default of 2.0 to 3.0; but there is a ton of room even above that. Trailer brakes kicked in very smoothly and safely. Very happy with how this unit performed. The 5th star only would require a bit easier installation, and maybe some clearer instructions on how to get it into calibration mode.

Easy to install and works great for size.
Small size, everything was just plug-in no splicing. Need to hook to trailer to calibrate. Good value for the cost. Was going to order the one that links to phone. Phone service too sketchy for price.

Best Controller Proportional and easy install in Pre Wired Vehicles buy the pigtail and check review for tools needed .
This is the best deal in Brake Controllers and the type of unit you want proportional not timed . It adjusts itself to up and downhills and proportionally to how hard your braking . The price was heavily discounted when I purchased so it was a no brainer . However the full price is not unreasonable . The only item this does not have is pocket mounting . In other words you have to mount it in with a bracket and screws . However it is only 4 or two to remove . Some have a bracket that mounts to the vehicle and you can just plug in and put the controller in the pocket mount . When you are not using the controller you unplug the back and pull it out storing it inside out of the heat or cold . You mount a pocket bracket on each tow vehicle you have thus needing only one unit for up to several tow vehicles . I will be ok as I primarily have one heavy tow vehicle though all my vehicles are set up to two any trailer I own . This was nice because Curt also makes plug in adapters for controller ready vehicles which my 94 Ford Van is . I just pluged in the pigtail into my wiring harness and then into the back of the controller . I had this installed in 10 minutes all one needs is a drill , a 1/8th inch drill bit and a phillips screw driver or 1/4 inch socket . With a nice new drill bit it took only 20 seconds to drill each screw hole for the mounting bracket . You mount the bracket to the controller then it has the dash or other area mounting holes on the outside of the bracket so you can drill it in place then place and tighten the screws . You just make sure where you are drilling there are no wires or items you could damage . It could not be easier . I am disabled and had it done and working in 15 minutes they do ask you disconnect the negative battery cable while installing . That takes a few minutes and a 3/8 wrench in my case and it is a good time to clean the terminals with a cable end cleaner which should be done yearly before winter . I have found Curt hitches and other products to be truly higher quality then other companies products including Reese and Draw Hitch both big players . I recommend Curt very highly . In my case if a car is prewired and can take the pigtail I mount the controller if it needs to be wired I have the dealer do it and it costs $250 here with the controller included in the cost . God Bless !

Works very well
Works great once adjusted correctly. Needs some adjustment depending on the weight of the load you are hauling. Will need to adjust sensitivity and brake level. All instructions are provided. There is also a video available on Curt website to help with the adjustment.

High Performing Brake Controller
Easy installation on my 2009 Colorado. Controller is easily setup - most of the work is done by the controller electronics. I am using this controller on a 3000 lb, single axle travel trailer and performance thus far has been exceptional. Smooth braking, no jerking and performs well when backing up a hill. It has a readily visible LED screen that shows a wealth of information. A definite buy.

UPDATES - It failed
UPDATED: After 5 trips using it it failed and gave me "A.E" code = Accelerometer Error → Internal error, Replace the unit. I would not trust this device again wile driving with my family. it definitelly breaks my trailer. does the job. Just sometimes I'm hessitant of the amount of power level it sends to the trailer breaks, i.e. while going downhill fairly fast and need to break suddendly it only shows about 2.5 power when the max is 9.0... But it is a good proportional break controller, super easy to install with the apropiate harness for your car

Very simple to use
Use it to pull a double axle camper trailer. Very easy to adjust.
