You get what you pay for, and in this case though the tool will do the job, you have to be extremely careful when using them. I did break one when I started a little to enthusiastically with the bottoming tap. Once I slowed down and took my time and used lots of thread cutting fluid the job went well.

Quality Control

After this set arrived, I put it away until I had time to use it. When I opened it for the first time, I noticed that the taps were of three different sizes and manufacturers. One of the taps was size 6-32. The other two taps were the correct size, but totally different markings and mfg. What's up with that? And the packaging for this. Is the big box really necessary? These could have easily gone in an envelope. Would return, but the process for this small tool is a real PITA.

5-40 tap set

I was delighted to find this set. Contains all three common and useful profiles, Taper, Plug, and Bottoming designs, making it useful in through and blind holes. So far I've used them on brass which is very easy to tap. They come in a convenient plastic box which separates them to avoid chipping from bumping together. The threads I cut with them were sharp and well formed.

Not as advertized

Product was supposed to be one each of a 1/4-28 tap bottom, plug and taper. 3 taps came and they were all taper. Too late to re-order. Needed the bottom tap today.

Very Good Product, Great Value

Worked exactly as expected. Easy tapping (taps were very sharp and strong), good sharp grooves on the threads, etc. This was the second Champion set I had ordered, and was quite pleased with this one and the last one. Wouldn't try to tap a ga'zillion holes with this set, but for the price they can't be beat.

These taps worked well for me in mild steel

These taps worked well for me in low carbon steel. I used tap lubricant and backed off the tap a quarter turn every half turn to clear the chips and keep from binding the tap.

Nice Set.

Good tool for hard to find thread size. Quality construction. Would buy again. Too bad these sizes cannot be found in sets of Taps, Dies, and proper drill sizes.

not the better HSS type

They are carbon taps (like they are advertised), not the better HSS type. So you need to be a little more gentle with them and be more aware of what you are trying to tap. They work just as good as any of the more expensive brands of carbon taps.
