Things to watch out for... not advised by CampChef
So, the unit came packaged well and looked great. After taking it out of the box, it was as I expected. Quality looked good. However, couple of things that were not pleasing... 1. Installation: When the bottom brackets are installed, on the left side, the protrude past the edge of the SK. This is by design. In my case, when I installed the unit, I noticed the protruded a tad too far so the SK was not on level with smoker. I spoke to CS support, sent pics and they could not apparenty see anything wrong with the install. Duh! Long story short, I had to slightly mod. the bottom bracket so it could move a tiny bit to the right. Some may not worry about this, but for me, it was important to get it right. CS should resolve this issue. BTW, CS provides 'levelling screws' but in my case, it would have tipped the SK in the wrong direction :). Oh, thing to watch. The edges are sharp. Wear gloves when installing (dont recall reading this in the manual?) 2. Propane gas hose/tube: It is too short when the tank is installed on the hook provided. In my case, it pulled the tank off center and kinked the hose. This is a biggie IMHO. To make things worse, they provide a right angle regulator - why I would not know given the angle it needs to screw on to the bottle? I spoke with support and they said they had no options when I asked to provide me with a longer hose and/or one with a straight through regulator. It was non-answer as CampChef provides longer hoses with other grills. Ok, so, I will need to buy a longer hose as this is a SAFETY issue. Again, surprised CS does not provide a hose that is a few inches longer? They SHOULD fix this matter. 3. Instruction manual is pretty basic: Does not say anything about prepping the SK. I ran mine for about 20 mins to burn off any oils etc. However, it generated a LOT of soot. In fact, it put soot on my stake and I had to remove the outer layer from the stake (best part) as I did not want to eat soot! Later, I discovered, there is an adjustment behind the control knob to adjust the air mixture (a disc behind the control knob and the front panel). This turns the flame from a yellow flame to a blue/clear flame, which is needed so there is no soot build up. As a result I had to fully clean the SK and grill box. Why does CampChef not say this clearly in the manual?? 4. Oh, one more thing... Not CampChef related per se but if you had cover before you installed the SK, chances are it will no longer fit. My cover did not or was pretty tight. So much so, one of the sharp edges on the CS, put a rip in it. So, I have to buy a new cover. Based on reviews, CampChef's own cover does not seem to fit over the SK/Grill?? I purchased the Patio King cover - feed back is mixed on the size. Let's see? BTW, it is expensive at $75. UPDATE: Having used it, I can say this is a blast. The heat it puts out is huge and fantastic. Thus, bumping up my rating. I also have to say, following these issues, I got some GOOD support from CampChef.

Searing and cooking
Since you can't sear meats or get a crispy coating on meats, the sear box is the answer. It is also a nice to use as a cooking surface when taking the sear box off and just use the burner. Also, the burner is cast iron so it should never wear out.

Fantastic accessory to my Camp Chef Grill. Way better than the original Sear Box

Great for searing
Easily installed to my 24 in Wood Wind pellet stove, replacing the sear box that came with it. I like the temp gauge, making it easier to cook steaks without flareups. It really gets hot and will turn anything to ash.

Good purchase
Overall this was a good purchase. Burner works great for frying with a cast iron Dutch oven. Does a great job searing steaks on the cast iron grates which is the main reason I got this. Gets up to heat fast. However, it does flare up pretty good. I have not tried burgers on it yet and am apprehensive about doing so due to how easily it flares up even when trying to cook at a lower temperature. All in all, I would definitely buy this again due to how well it works for the main reason I purchased it and that’s searing steaks after starting out on the smoker side.

This sucker gets HOT!
I added this to my Woodwind 24 so that I can reverse sear steaks. I usually use a charcoal chimney that's red hot, and I was doubtful that this would go as good a job. Boy, was I wrong! I turned this up to medium heat, and after 10 minutes, I checked the temperature with an IR thermometer. It was close to 900 degrees! (Don't put this next to your house. Really!) I can get a sear on a steak with this that's unbelievable. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a steak with a nice sear.

Not impressed with the stainless steel finish.
The media could not be loaded. The Camp Chef sidekick works great, but for the price...I expected a higher quality finish on the grill box cover and handle. The stainless steel on the handle is rough to the touch and all the edges seem like they were grinded but not polished properly, if at all. This isn't a cheap grill and I expect more for the money I paid.

A camp chef must buy
This side unit is why I switched from a traeger to a camp chef. Don’t want wood flavour than bang. Propane side bbq, pizza? Bang! There’s a pizza oven attachment. Love breakfast? They got you brother, the side griddle is perfect. Best of all they all fit on the 14 inch stove system too. I definitely do not own shares in camp chef but why pay more for less when you can get more for less. I’d buy that for a dollar
