We bought these for a Cub Scout activity. I don't know if they'd stand up to daily wear and tear, but they survived a day of use with boys aged 5-11 and will be something we can save to use again in the future. We bought a Silva compass to compare. You can clearly tell the Silva is superior build quality but for an item that will very likely get damaged or lost due to small, rambunctious hands - these worked great. Compass quality was good, just as accurate in our use as the Silva. Mainly it was the build quality that prevents me from giving 5 stars. It's clearly targeted at people who need a bunch of affordable compasses. We ordered 5, they all worked great and were in pristine physical condition on receipt. I would not hesitate to suggest these to people who have a need similar to what I had.

Boy scouts
I bought 5 of these for an orienteering course for Boy Scouts. They all worked great, all read same directions from map to compass and compass to map. All boys found their way and learned how to navigate by map and compass. Would I buy this for life and death in the field? Probably not. But as a teaching tool they did excellent. I also used my U.S. Army issued compass as back up and it read the same as these so...

they would probably be great, but seem a little large to me
Is it just me, or do all the Ultimate Survival things seem a little large. I bought this and the mirror and while they are both functional, they are really too big for my needs backpacking. I am keeping them, but if you are an ultra light backpacker, look elsewhere. If you don't mind a bigger item, then they are find. Not heavy really, just bigger than many of the same items by other manufacturers. On the flip side if you are a big guy, they would probably be great!

Ideal for all school age children and adults
This compass was ideal for teaching our grandchildren how to navigate. We did several activities inside and outside that involved using the compass rose. They practiced orienting themselves and finding objects using the compass. It is easy to read and sturdy.

this will work fine for the purpose I bought it for
A solid compass for map reading or general use. Has most of the features that any other basic compass has: glow indicators, beveled case, magnifying glass, several scales marked on baseplate... While the needle doesn't seem to move as smoothly or settle as quickly as the more expensive name brands, this will work fine for the purpose I bought it for.

Great compass that does the job!!
This compass was perfect for us to use at girls camp. The markings are clear and the face moves easily which makes it a breeze to figure out the components. The cord that came with it was simple to attach so you could wear it around your neck. We needed to buy several for our campers so the price was right. We needed 12 and for some reason they came from two different sellers, but both packages arrived within a few days of each other. They arrived fairly quick and were wrapped well. If you need a simple, but accurate compass, then I would recommend this product.

Pros: Price, adjustable housing, basic functionality Cons: Needle occasionally comes off of the jeweled bearing upon which it sits, lacks adjustments for declination, no sight/mirror. This truly is a basic compass. If that's all you need, this is a fair product to get. However, my needle would fall off the jeweled bearing (aka the metal piece in the center of the needle where the needle sits). This would cause the needle to stay stationary and not point to magnetic north. It caused some confusion the first time it did it but a firm smack on the compass and it fell into place. Still, a bit frustrating. Additionally, while the compass will get you the functionality you need, it does not set for declination (adjusting for the difference between magnetic and true north) or have the convenience of a sight. I found myself wanting for both, particularly the former, and regretting not upgrading.

Great Compass
The compass works great. (The needles point in the correct direction.) This is built just like the compass my father bought me when I started scouting. It's great to be able to overlay it on a map for navigation and with the magnifying area, my tired eyes catch a break when reading small-print on the map. I've taught a lot of orienteering over the years and these were for my two brand-new scout sons so I can teach them to navigate without a GPS.

Útil y a buen precio.
The media could not be loaded.

It definitely points north
I bought a lot of these for a family reunion activity. They worked exactly like I expect compasses to work. They pointed north and had a fairly easy base to allow younger kids to establish direction without too much fuss. If I were to have any complaint, it would be that I found the needles very sensitive to any kind of interference. Walking by a metal shed would throw off the needle and you had to be careful to make sure it was pointing in the right direction before taking measurements. I expect this to some degree in all compasses, but found it quite pronounced here. For the price this was an excellent purchase and we plan on using them quite a bit into the foreseeable future.

Useless; makes a better coaster
This compass is actually just a fancy circle. Does it point north? Not at all. But fear not my friends for we have positive insight to this non returnable item. Did you get a compass dud? Turn it into a coaster your friends will talk about for campfires to come. Want to accessorize your cottage with rustic charm? Add a broken compass to your knick Knacks. Want to prank your local pirate? Tell them it points to their biggest desires. Tired of your jerk sibling stealing all the marshmallows? Yes, the useless compass can also work as a rock in stoning your jerk sibling to death. Way to go Cain. Just don't buy this compass.

the handle doesnt move fluidly, for a quick get me out of here situation, it may do the trick, however not a quality compass. I am not even sure if I get the same direction within 5/6 degrees everytime. (over a couple k not an issue, but for a full day this would likely create a lot of extra mileage) I guess with a GPS as a backup to correct from time to time it would not be an issue, but in a survival situation, I'd rather get something more expensive but more precise. Overall ok for what I plan to do with it (day hikes in the ADK)
