One of my new favorite Amazon purchases!
We used this for our 1200-mile move from Texas to South Carolina, and it is a great find!!! Definitely listen to all the people who recommend a PVC frame. I'm so glad that we did this. It definitely helped keep things weight balanced, and the bag didn't budge from my car even when we hit bumps. I was a bit nervous about that and concerned about the bag falling off the car (after reading some previous reviews), but my mom was traveling in the vehicle following me, and she said it didn't budge at all and just moved with the car. I don't have a roof rack, but I bought the car clips from the same company (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YS3V88/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), and they worked great. I also purchased a protective mat (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GDBGDWV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to place between the bag and the car, and I didn't have any issues with scratches. I was a little confused about the instructions in terms of the bottom straps, and I'm still not sure I put them on completely right, but I think the main goal there was to keep the bag stable against the car and from bumping along, so it seemed to work. It could also be that the bag was weighted down enough that it really wasn't going to move. For the PVC frame, I had trouble measuring the pieces and could have gone slightly longer, but it still worked well. I didn't want to have to use a wooden bottom and sand the edges, so we cut out a cardboard piece to be the right size and then stabilized that by wrapping it in duct tape. It worked great for a stable floor. I didn't weigh the bag, but I think we may have exceeded the 100 pound recommendation. I'm not recommending you do that -- just saying. We also ended up putting the bag on the car first and then loading it, and that seemed much easier. I stuffed the bag to the brim with a few bags of vacuum sealed clothing (the medium and smaller bags -- not the extra large size.) We also had a couple of big ziploc totes with towels and bedding (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-70162-Flexible-Totes-Jumbo/dp/B003UEMD1M/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1539893571&sr=1-2&keywords=ziploc%2Btote.) We had other random bedding wrapped in moving wrap and at the last minute we added our robot vacuum and charging base. I had a small lock, so I used that to lock the two metal parts of the outside zipper together. I imagine someone could have broken into this if they really wanted to, but I have the feeling it would have been noisy and not quick. We spent 2 nights on the road staying in motels, and we didn't have a problem with security. Of course, we were in relatively small towns too for our overnight stays. We were in Florida a day and a half before Michael hit, and we drove through heavy rains throughout our trip. In the last hour of our drive, even with the wipers on the highest setting, I had to slow down and use my hazards because visibility was so poor. Despite this downpour, when we opened the bag, everything was dry, and I didn't find any water inside the bag. Again, I think the frame helped here because with the bag keeping its rectangular shape, the flap over the zipper was able to stay in place and keep water from going into the bag. When we unloaded the bag, we even had a pool of water on top that i had to scoop off. I was a little skeptical of putting my license in the bag as well, but you can only access the license from the inside, and it fits tightly in place -- especially if you pack things in place like we did. I suppose with a sharp enough blade, someone could cut through the outside to get to your plates, but it wouldn't be a quick job. In terms of gas mileage, it didn't seem to cause any reductions. I also checked the straps at every stop, but the only ones I ever had to adjust were the bottom ones (and again, that's likely because I didn't put them on right. I think if I could find some thin ratchet straps I might use those next time instead. I also like the idea of another ratchet strap underneath the bag -- maybe with a couple more of the clips. I don't know that it was really needed, but it would have been more for my peace of mind. Also, like others have posted, I didn't have an issue with using the bag while driving at high rates of speed. Yes, I drove through Texas with some high speeds, and I never had a problem. For the cost of this compared to other options -- including trailers and hitches or roof bags and racks -- it was definitely well worth the investment. I could easily see myself using this again. It's not the kind of thing I would set up and use for a quick trip -- but definitely for a longer one where I didn't need to get into my trunk and wanted to haul a lot of things. p.s. Amazon, can I get credit for a roadway referral? While stopped in traffic on the interstate in Louisiana, I spotted someone taking a picture of my cargo bag. He wanted to get the brand name to know what to get. He then pulled up next to me, and I told him he could purchase it on Amazon. p.p.s. If you're that Cajun gentleman from the interstate in Louisiana that saw this on the back of my white Kia Sorento, then yes, this is the bag you should get. If you want it to look as beautiful as mine did and be as stable, then definitely make yourself a PVC frame and something to use as a base/flooring -- either the wood people have suggested or cardboard wrapped in duct tape like I did. (For everyone else, sorry, there are no pictures. After our long trip and the longer time spent packing up and unpacking -- not just our two SUV's but a 26' moving trailer too, I just didn't have the time, patience, or energy to take pictures.)

Works but odd
It is like a backpack that lays against the back of the car. The picture looks more structured than this is. It is waterproof. It kept everything dry and stayed secure through high winds, thunderstorms, non paved roads, etc. It limits the ability to get items out of the back. No problem accessing items in the bag. It works.

From Michigan to California, GREAT EXPERIENCE!
We moved from Michigan to California and hit every campground In between. We needed more room in our Kia Soul to house the gear and stuff. This bag was the best! We doubled our space and went over 3000 miles in 6 weeks through storms, deserts, and sunshine. No leaks and no problems. Because I’m a bit of a redneck, I was worried about weight and long mileage using plastic clasps, so I bought two ratchet straps and but it around it but never needed it. Great product and if this one ever breaks I’ll happily buy another.

Frees up room inside my Ford Expedition when camping
When I go camping I usually sleep in the back of my Expedition. I was looking for a solution that would free up some space inside. The usual approach is to put a carrier on the roof but this cuts down on mileage and is also very difficult to access on this tall vehicle. I considered a trailer hitch carrier but it is more expensive and also needs a water tight container to protect the items stored there. Also it is necessary to remove it to use the back hatch. This product allows one to store things outside the vehicle without putting them on the roof and it is water tight. The one downside is that once loaded up with gear it is too heavy to use the back hatch. It must be unloaded first but then the back hatch can swing up with no problem. Getting the straps set to the right length and properly attached to the roof rack is time consuming and requires a ladder. However, once I arrive at the camping spot and unload the bag I plan to unbuckle it and use it next to the vehicle to store things that I don't want inside but need to be kept dry. It would have been nice if the two hanging straps each had 2 buckles so that it would not be necessary to unloop the strap from the roof rack to remove the bag. I have already tested though that I can stand on the bumper and feed the strap through the roof rack when I need to reattach the bag. You can see in the photos that I have adjusted the straps so that the bag rests on the bumper when it is loaded. At this height it is also fairly easy to load and unload the bag. Overall I am happy with the purchase. It seems to be well designed and strong with reinforcements in the right places. I'll be going on a road trip this weekend so if there is any update to my review I'll be sure to post that afterwards.

ugly but useful
the "frame" that comes with it is an h shape that only goes on the very bottom. if you don't put supports or something inside, the thing is just a mess. since i have no SkillZ and can't build myself anything, i put a 189l rubbermaid box into it. (without the lid) the box was already cracked and garbage, so i don't care that it's squished, but it definatly won't be useable after this trip. it's got really squished and cracked. the tote fills maybe halfway up the bag? and fills about 3/4 of the bottom. so it's a really big bag. but you def can't travel around without some sort of support, it'll shift around and fall out or something. i'm going across canada. it was sunny skies and very nice out, and everything inside the backpack got wet. i have no idea why or how. road splashing??? everything inside the suitcases are damp and smell like road and so far we've only had it for 9 hours on the road. 4 more days to go. not a huge deal cause i am generally not a clean person, but you i guess you don't want to carry food or anything inside. i got ratching straps from the get go since i don't trust the included straps alone. good idea, cause the clips aren't the best quality and for sure won't stand up to anything heavy. but we're using the black straps to hold everything steady and the ratchet straps to bear the load. seems ok so far. also i photo copied my licence plate to put into the pouch, instead of taking my real one off. so far, we haven't been stopped by cops. it is really hard to drive with the box on top and the bag in the back due to winds... and i'm going through gasoline like crazy... but it's a fairly comfortable ride inside the car for my great big dogs to sprawl out, so worth it.

Good cargo bag especially for without roof rack .. at least there’s an option
I like having it to keep the inside of my vehicle clutter free when traveling on a camping trip. It worked well however I wish it had more structure , I feel like it’s a sac dangling off the back . I used dog leashes tied to the handles of the bag looped into hooks on the roof for extra hold. I like it , it works for me . It can be a bit of a hassle putting on and off . But works for what I need !

Great until it broke....
Used it on a trip the day after I got it. Was working like a charm until a key buckle broke. Had to pull over on a busy highway and jury rig a fix. Used the fix on the rerun trip. Excellent idea and got lots of comments from fellow travellers. Need to get the buckle replaced so will see how it goes.

Very disappointed with this product
Very disappointed with this product. It has a frame on the bottom but nothing keeping it in the form/shape that you see in the picture so if you don't fill it right full it's like a limp back flopping in the wind..good idea if it had a complete frame to maintain the shape in the picture. 1 hour after I assembled it to be disappointed I gave it to some trucker at a truck stop..He was happy with it..He said it would make a good hockey bag for his son..Lol waist of money????
