Great potential, if you learn some "tricks" to use it
When I first opened this gift for my nephew (to inspect for quality before I gave it to him), I couldn't see ANYTHING. However, my partner, who is a medical doctor, then helped me learn how to use it, and I can see everything beautifully now. This product has a lot of great potential, but to utilize it you will need to practice a few "ticks." I have some tips for users and tips for AmScope. Tips for Users (please read all the tips before attempting a view): 1) In order to see the prepared slides, you must begin on the *lowest* magnification, find the sample, focus the view, and then graduate to the next highest setting, repeating the find/focus process (but do not attempt this until you've read all the "tips"). You will not be able to find most samples if you start on a higher setting. 2) Do not press on, hold, or touch the viewing column (the neck of the microscope that you peer into) while focusing or viewing a slide. If you do, it will bump the lens away from what you are trying to see and you won't be able to maintain focus. The only part of the microscope you should touch is the actual focus knob. This may be tough for kids, but it's a good skill to learn. 3) If you see part of the slide, but want a fuller view, move the slide in the **opposite** direction than what it looks like you should (that is, if it looks like the slide needs to go down, move it up; same for Left vs. Right). The instruction manual doesn't mention this, but it's a very important, elementary fact that will drive you batty if you don't know it. 4) You are going to see, what appears to be, light grey, transparent dots and circles when you peer into the lens, and when you view the slides. That is OK. All microscopes have these blemishes to some extent. You will not get rid of them. However, this ***should NOT impair your ability to view and focus on each slide*** so that you see their cells, bright colors, and sharp detail. When the microscope is properly focused, these grey blotches do not block or inhibit an excellent view of the specimen (when properly focused, you don't really even notice them). But, if you are not able to focus, almost all you will see is these grey blotches. You **can** clean the lenses with alcohol to remove some external dust or grime, but no matter what there will **always** be some debris (it's a microscope: it blows everything up, including dust and water marks). So, before assuming it's a problem with the lens, make sure you get a good focus (following the steps below) and see if your view is actually blocked. It shouldn't be. My husband works with industrial grade microscopes and he says all of them have this effect, to some extent. 5) My Corn root slide is hopeless. With a lot of work, my husband was able to get a view of it, but it was barely visible even then; so, don't try that one first (you'll assume the microscope doesn't work). Try the darkest specimen and then once you have the knack of it, move to the more transparent ones. They are all BEAUTIFUL once you can get a good focus (except the corn root). Tips for AmScope: 1) Ditch the corn root sample and replace it with something larger. It is almost impossible to see. 2) Improve your instruction manual to include directions about how to focus, beginning from the lowest setting, and informing folks not to touch the viewing column. 3) Include three images in your instruction manual of what they should see with no specimen (including the grey blotches), what an unfocused specimen could look like, and what a sharp, focused image should look like. These can be grey scale, and would provide some guidance. (PS: I'm a technical writer, so let me know if you need someone to improve your instruction manuals). So, here are my version of written instructions for viewing a sample slide: 1. Place your slide under the viewer. 2. Do not touch any part of the microscope other than the focus knob while viewing your specimen. 3. Begin on the lowest magnification (300x). Adjust the slide until you see at least a shadow of the specimen in the viewer, and then slowly turn the focus knob until you can clearly see the specimen (you should be able to see some definition between cells). 4. If you see the specimen in part of your viewing circle, but want to see more, move the slide in the *opposite* direction than it appears that you should (eg: if it looks like you should move it down, move it up). 5. Once you have a clear view, you can increase your magnification to 600X. 6. Note: when you turn the lens to the next setting, your view of the specimen will change (as the lens will be lined up slightly differently). You can shift the slide again, or you can gain focus, and then move the slide. Remember not to bump or lean on the viewing column, as it will cause you to loose focus. Hope this helps.

It's is not for the picky, prissy, scientist.
Cons: -the items that come with it are almost like kids pretend grocery toys, very flimsy -the case is no better than a cardboard box made of very thin plastic..very thin.. but it's about the scope -the zoom in/out knob moves the lens a little when using so you have to hold it -the lite is so Brite and you can't point it at the object..you have to obscure it a little -its a little tricky and might not be for someone that wants lab quality for $30...nor should it be. So idk if that's a con or pro Pros: - It works. With realism and patience. -the zooms work good. - the microscope is pretty good quality.. totally $30 worth. And perfect for what I wanted... -good price to have a microscope on hand in case you wanna get your science on. (Bought this for myself FYI) All in all.. I'm keeping it.. when I was in school the microscopes were amazing.. easy.. heavy.. and had a lot of cool stuff... But in the end the image is the same and that's what I wanted for a much much much lower price. Oh and when zooming in and out.. just put ur finger on the main part that moves up and down to keep it steady so u can keep ur position on the specimen (wanted to use that word) ...oh and the first pic is my blood... Hahaha.. creepy but I had to..

although a solid built scope, the optics are not of great quality
although a solid built scope, the optics are not of great quality, needs better lenses and less non needed secondary items, faux "safe" scapel, etc... I bought to start my 6 year old with and she shortly found it irritating as I did, to resolve a good focus with the optics. I am a biologist and know of what I speak. Do Not recommend.

Cheap
This was definitely not on sale. The price I paid was even to much. I thought it would be interesting for my grandchildren to use. But it wasn’t. Seeing things moving around would have definitely made it worth it.

Great for young children
I purchased this for my mother, because she loves to look at nature. She requested this for mother's day, so after some deliberation on price, I gave in and purchased the AMSCope-Kids Beginning Microscope. Honestly, I am not overly pleased with this purchase (and I am not hard to please). The microscope is a little flimsy and a lot of the supplies seem a little on the cheap side. However, the product was made for a child and I think it would be a nice beginning set. I would not recommend this for anyone over the age of 11. The case is a nice touch. I would imagine for a kid, the case would make them feel much more of an "official" scientist. The kit includes everything a young scientist would need to have a little fun. I had one just like this when I was younger and it absolutely amazed me. The microscope itself is pretty easy to use once you figure out how to adjust the knobs. There is definitely a learning curve to this scope, but give yourself some time and you will figure it out. The zoom is perfect for what it was purchased for (looking at leaves, insects, etc)

Great piece of equipment
Great piece of equipment, particularly considering the price. The quality seems quite reasonable -- just do not expect too much and you won't be disappointed. I have tried all modes and as far as I can see everything is in focus and well-lit. Note, that field of view very small for high magnification levels, so it is definitely a struggle to move the viewing glass until you finally can see a specimen. However, this is not related to microscope's quality -- just the laws of physics. Overall, I definitely recommend this microscope for beginners and as a present for young (from age 7) children.

Very good quality for the price.
Seem to be well made and quite robust for the price. Tried out briefly and was quite impressed with the quality for what to me was a relatively petit microscope. Bought two, one for my Grandson and one for a friends son, so only tried one of them briefly. I've used various microscopes over the years and these seem like quite good imitations of the professional ones of years ago with added bonus of LED lighting. The plastic slide holders looked a bit fragile but should last with a little care.

Too flimsy for a student. Basically a toy
This is not an impressive microscope. The moving parts are not sturdy, and it can be difficult to see unless you are in a room properly lit but natural sunlight. It is just ok for a introduction, but I have personally experienced better microscopes for children. It is for a six year old so it will serve as a toy more than something he can use to make good investigation of the microscopic world.

Worth every penny.
Brilliant microscope! I had reservations due to the price, but to be honest, it was bought for my son who turned 7 and it's great. It can zoom in so well and is easy to focus. Obviously it is a delicate piece of apparatus but with a little care you can get some excellent results. I'd definitely recommend.

Good piece of equipment
Bought for our 7 year old's birthday. He is an intelligent lad, and his dad told me today it appears to be a good piece of equipment, having used it the once so far to view some insect slides I also purchased. They are looking forward to looking at things from the garden once the weather improves. Pleased with the quality.
