Perfect as deterrent for cleaning crew theft
Very solid for the price. Easy to use. Holds several check books extra wallets and cash. My only complaint (so far, I just installed) was the mounting bolts that in came with. The 2 5/16 hex head bolts were 1 inch long. The safe bottom is only about an 1/8 of an inch and the drawer bottom was just a bit thicker than that. The problems with included hardware are: first they are too long so will either stick out through the bottom or into the safe; and secondly someone with bad intentions could put a wrench on the hex head and remove. I went to my local hardware store and bought 1/2 inch long carriage bolts to replace. The rounded heads of the carriage bolts go up through the bottom of the drawer and the nut barely sticks out inside the safe and can only be removed if the safe is open. Much safer than what was included.

Great value
I was skeptical at first but after receiving the safe the quality was more than I expected.

Nice security box for the price
This drawer safe, like all similar safes, is really more of a security box than a real safe. That can also be said for safes many times more expensive, though. A burglar could take the whole safe and open it later. It includes bolts for fastening to the drawer bottom, but in most cases the entire drawer could be taken, so I probably won't even use those. For what it is, it seems sturdy and serves its purpose. It's also very easy to use. I bought it because a family member has the slightly larger model and is pleased with it. The lock has been updated so that it's more difficult to pick and the batteries seem secure. It's easy to reset the number code and the master code, which is a second number code for opening the safe. Set your code by pressing the reset button beside the batteries and enter three to eight numerals, then the # key. To reset the master or second code, press 0 twice, then the reset button, then the other code you want and the # key. It might come with a preset master code so be sure to enter two new codes of your own. To initially open the safe, remove the keyhole cover, insert one of the keys, and turn the key and the knob toward each other. Then open and insert the batteries and set both your number codes. Test before closing the safe. Directions are included. It can then be opened with either of your number codes or with the two keys in case the batteries die or you forget your codes. This fits in my nightstand drawer but is too tall to fit in my kitchen drawers. The height is about 4-5/8". The inside is large enough to hold two compact pistols, jewelry, small tablet, or similar items. The depth is reduced by the thickness of the locking mechanism on the inside of the lid, though, so thick items won't fit. This should be enough security to keep out young kids, friends of friends, or any visitors with sticky fingers or who are overly nosy. it probably won't protect things from a burglary when you're not home. The larger models will bolt to the floor or wall framing and would be a more secure, but this one conveniently fits in a drawer. I had a similar one that cost over twice as much but I like this one better so far.

Sufficient but flawed.
The AmazonBasics security safe deserves a 3.5 to 3.75 star rating, but of course partial stars cannot be awarded; normally I'd round up, but in this case, 3 stars is appropriate. Here's why. First, the pros. - It's heavy and the walls are very thick. - The number pad is easy to use, and each number depress emits a clearly audible beep. - The bolts are thick and provide a satisfying "thunk" when unlocking/locking the safe. - The key hole for bypassing the numeric keypad is "hidden" by a removable plastic plate, which is more aesthetic than anything. Now the cons. - The housing for the keypad, lock disengage, and batteries are all on the underbelly of the lid, which is exceptionally thick. Coupled with the fact that the lid is inset into the exterior of the safe, this significantly reduces the total space available inside the safe. Basically: an 8in x 4.5in area in the middle of the safe will only provide about 1in of depth inside the safe, as the lid housing is around 2in thick. There's areas on the edges of the safe where taller items can fit, but they can't be very large overall. - The safe lid is, overall, pretty heavy, and has no pneumatic mechanism or anything similar to aid in neither the opening nor closure of the door. The handle is rather small and easily slips out of the fingers, which can result in the lid dropping back down onto the safe. Which leads us to the next issue: - The battery door is a flimsy plastic slide-on door that easily pops off if the safe top closes too hard. This has often resulted in the door popping off and the batteries all falling out after closure of the safe, without knowing it happened. This of course the requires a hunting down of the backup keys to reopen the safe and reseat the batteries. If one needed to access the safe quickly, this could be a very problematic hinderance. - The lid dropping down can also be a bit of a hazard. Be sure your fingers are clear of the safe. keep in mind too that, fully open, the lid sits at maybe 92 degrees from the safe itself -- a breeze or slight vibration can send the lid careening back down at full velocity. - The latch to bolt/unbolt the safe has no auto-bolt mechanism at all. It's a quarter-turn device which must be locked back once the safe is closed. It's less of an issue with repeated use and build-up of muscle memory, but the amount of times I've closed the door to the safe and forgotten to latch it back is a non-zero number. (I have another safe in another room which has both pneumatic arms to open the door and auto-locks when the door is closed, so maybe this won't be an issue for some other users.) - Speaking of the bolts, they are only on the left side of the safe -- meaning that, theoretically, one might be able to pry the safe open from the other side (although the lid being inset into the safe makes it slightly more difficult.) - Because the lid is hinged on the top, because it's so heavy, because there are no pneumatic arms to help with opening the door, this safe is really only suited for horizontal placement. Yes it's a "drawer safe" -- just make sure that's your use case, and there weren't any plans to mount it vertically. - While it's a bit over 11in in length, its width is under 8in -- keep that in mind if storing 8.5x11 documents without bending them was an objective. All in all, I find the safe to be "meh." I've worked around some of its limitations and overall it'll do for the use-case I need it for. That being said, were I to purchase another "personal safe" again, it would not be this one.

Secure, compact, easy to use.
This safe is well priced, secure and programming is quite easy if you read the instructions. If I had a quibble it would be that the silver knob/handle could be a little larger to make it easier to get hold of. It does what it is supposed to do and I am pleased. I think I will get another to secure other items.

FITS IN MY DRAWER PERFECTLY
VERY SECURE WHERE IT IS BUT IF ANYONE WAS SERIOUS ENOUGH THETY COULD EASILY JUST TRASH THE DRAWER AND MAKE OFF WITH THE SAFE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2021 - The safe still does what it is supposed to do but only too well. So some unknown reason the mechanism began ticking and the electronic keys failed to work. Unfortunately I temporarily left the key inside the safe so there was no way to attempt to open it with a key. This is where you realise just how good this piece of kit really is if you were the thief - the drawer had to be removed and then dismantled without causing damage - then all the 3M double sided tape had to be prised from drawer base, resulting in the drawer base layer having to be replaced but at last the safe was removed. The thief would then need an angle grinder to cut away the metal back but fortunately for me the knocking about stopped the ticking and I was able to open the safe and retrieve the contents. Having lost all confidence in the product and a replacement being out of stock the kind and helpful Amazon lady offered me a full refund in lieu of the locksmiths fees and damage to the drawer. I then searched all the internet for a couple of hours only to discover there is so similar sized / priced item available anywhere. So, I am quite prepared to re-order the safe from Amazon when it comes back in stock and to be prepared to use the safe just with the key in the event the same thing happens again - that way I will have a perfectly serviceable and secure safe albeit having to use it with a key if the electronics pack up. Many people have commented upon the batteries falling out - mine didn't despite all the banging and crashing - simply because I had taped the cover in place having previously recognised the batteries were likely to fall out of the lid because of the design. A design oversight easily remedied by the user. Overall not happy with the events but generally happy knowing what a thief would have to do offering some piece of mind.
