Like Zutto but for 1-12 cups
This dome shower head is a game changer. It has four lines that extend from the center. It looks like a plus sign +. Water comes out at one point along each line. It drips from the inner edge of the four lines if you're on BOLD (as close to the center as you can get), and the outer edge of each line on CLASSIC (resulting in four drip dots along the far edge of each line away from the center). Zojirushi's Zutto coffee machine has drip points in a similar setup (plus one that is dead center), but they can't be adjusted. Some people rave about the flavor of the Zutto - I loved it - but they also complain that the coffee may be "over extracted" because if you make a full pot with max grounds, the grounds have a crater in the middle. I was hopeful this machine might be as flavorful as the Zutto, but adjustable so you can avoid a crater and spread out the shower head if you use more grounds. The machine sort of confirms this. The instructions say "BOLD is recommended for brewing 1-3 cups of coffee" (bold shrinks the shower head drip area to hit the less amount of grounds). My first two brews, each just 12 oz, have been wonderful! Similar flavor to the Zutto in my opinion. I'm very happy. Although I wish there was a drip dead center too. I've used #2 filters so far since it doesn't come with #4, and they fit ok for now. Btw I opened the lid to try to measure temperature (which it says not to do) and I got like 180 to 195 ish, but that might be my thermometer. I wonder if by the time the 200F water hits the dome, then when it drips down it's cooled by a few degrees. I don't subscribe to the 200 degree requirement anyway. I've heard world championship coffee is sometimes brewed at like 170. I think this coffee is good because it's brewed slow and the water hits the beans. I think the cheaper "classic" version of this machine is pretty much a wonderful option and it has the main adjustment for smaller 1-3 cup brews (adjusting the shower head to BOLD) in my opinion. One thing I like about the programmable version is when your coffee is finished, instead of showing the current time, the screen starts at 0 and shows the time elapsed since brewing. Btw time is always military time - I don't think you can change that according to the manual. And the "brew" button has like a braille bump to it and takes a little extra push to register, so I hope that button's reliable.

Makes fabulous coffee
We love our morning coffee and are always searching for a great coffee maker without breaking the bank. The last few years we’ve been buying Cuisinart coffee makers as they make good coffee, are affordable, and look nice. But the carafes break constantly, so we’re done with that brand. We enjoy the quality of a French press brew, but kind of a hassle to make. So, after a lengthy search chose this new Zojirushi design, and it’s fantastic! Super simple without all the bells and whistles. The most important thing is that is makes amazing coffee - it brews at the right temperature! So many coffee makers do not get the water hot enough for the right brew. You can choose the strength of the brew by just toggling a lever, and it’s just a simple on/off switch to operate. The one thing we had to get used to, however, is that the hot plate function doesn’t turn off automatically, we have to remember to turn the maker off when we’re done. But that’s not a big deal. So happy with our new Zojirushi and the incredible coffee it makes!

Wow, just does amazing drip coffee well.
Was sick and tired of digital, programmable, 20 button coffee machines and wanted something super simple that does coffee right. Previous coffee maker was randomly turning on in the middle of the night to boil air, needed to replace that thing asap. Stumbled across the Zojorushi while looking at the usual companies and all of my needs (turns on/off when I want, no other buttons, hits 200F on the temp) gave it a shot. Wow, it just hits the right temperature and think I was living in denial with earlier coffee machines that came with mesh filter baskets ... nothing really compares to the smoothness of good drip coffee through a paper filter, this one takes #4 cone filters but you don't find that out until you are in the manual. If you want to save mother Earth, just compost that coffee and filter! The Zojorushi just does well done coffee all the time.

Great coffee
I have a Zojirushi bread maker and rice cooker which area amazing and so I was pleased to find that the company also made coffee makers. The coffee makers has a shower dome which means that the water is spayed up and onto the coffee grounds. I don’t know if there is a basis for this being better or maybe it is the 200 degree brewing temperature, but the machine does make a great cup of coffee for a drip machine. The Zojirushi EC-ESC120 includes several programs including a cup course (from 1 to 4 cups), an iced coffee program (the brewing occurs at 68 F, more coffee grounds are required and you must make at least 6 cups), a timer and a cleaning mode. The instruction manual includes recommendations for the amount of coffee to use for the different programs. There is also a slider at the top of the machine which goes from Classic (light flavor) to Bold which is recommended if you are only brewing 1 to 3 cups rather than a full pot. As with any coffee maker (drip, plunger, espresso, etc) it takes a bit of experimenting to figure out the ideal amount of coffee grinds, the coffee and size grind and the slider setting to make the cup of coffee that is right for you. I started with the slider on bold and making 2 cups with the recommended weight of coffee to use. That turned out well. I then started playing around with adding more ground coffee and the coffee maker was able to handle that and make stronger brews. The coffee maker does require a paper filter (Number 4 cone) so be sure to get those.
