Best way to play but pieces messed up
I like the set a lot but one or two of my pieces have a big black mark on it.

great for teaching my kid playing chess but not for playing chess
the game looks really good and in that aspect they neiled it, BUT once every material is so colorful I can not see intuitivly which one is mine. the game is great to make your child interested in chess and learning it but not more than that, for trully playing chess I need black and white peaces or other distictive colors.

Yessssss!
My kids & I (two boys, 9 & 12) have been teaching ourselves chess as a family. We LOVE this set & have come to really love the game. The Mario theme is super cute & the pieces come labeled so you know who is who. I highly recommend this if you have kids into chess.

Great for Nintendo character lovers!
Very cute and durable, but very confusing during a game trying to remember what each character is supposed to designate. Trying to remember which one is supposed to be bishop, knight, etc. was tricky.

Great product, great quality
The colors are vibrant, it is as pictured. Great for our 6 year old who can be a little rough with chess pieces. Having fun characters also helps encourage being gentle so it can last longer. Shipped on time

Beautiful, well constructed set
I bought this several years ago (2010 actually, according to Amazon!) so I feel I can speak to the quality of the product at this point. It's held up very well, with no pieces breaking or fading. Assuming you aren't giving this to a young child to drool, stab and otherwise abuse I don't see why it wouldn't last forever (and even then it still might, there are just no promises). The board feels like a standard chess board, not exceptionally strong (so if you have a kid who enjoys throwing things you might do well to have it laminated). The board (quartered) and all pieces come in a metal box (pictured). My only minor complaint is that the pieces are housed in cheap black plastic that feels a little flimsy (though that's hardly a huge deal if you're careful). The pieces themselves are well painted, with obvious attention paid to the small details (i.e., Bowser's spikes). The colors are vibrant (as any Mario themed item should be!). The set could easily be a display piece (my husband collects Mario products so that's what we've done with it). Mario and Bowser are the king pieces on their respective teams, while Luigi and Bowser Jr. serve as the queens (no, I don't understand why either). Overall I'd highly recommend this to any Mario fan who might want to learn how to play chess. Or perhaps someone extra competitive who wants to stab their opponent in the eye with their king piece (Bowser is certainly capable of this).

Overall a nice quality chess set.
This version comes in a tin box which is nice and strong and has a good closure (I'm not worried about it spontaneously popping open when stored on it's side, or moving it around like I am with some of the poorer cardboard game boxes). There is a window in the tin box which is cool when it's all packaged as it originally comes however the actual plastic inserts that hold all of the pieces in the box are too cumbersome to bother trying to get all the pieces back into them after you've played (and difficult to take out too, relatively) so I chucked the inserts and just used 4 sandwich bags to store the pieces together for MUCH easier set up and clean up, which of course makes that window on the box useless immediately. The pieces/figures are of a high quality, dense and with good weight and overall nice detail. The painting on some of them is a little suspect but overall I feel like the quality of the pieces is more than good enough. It's a little confusing that on one side the Queen is Luigi instead of Peach, and it takes a little bit to remember what each character represents Chess wide however the base of each piece has the Chess piece name in relief on it so you can always refer to that when playing until you've got it down. The board itself is a typical printed cardboard "board game board" and really isn't anything special. I felt like it could have been made to be thicker and stronger considering the cost of the set and this is the main reason for my subtracting a star. I do feel like it's a little pricey in the end for what it is, however, I don't think you'll find a nicer quality mario themed chess set out there if you're buying for a mario fan.

Does Exactly What It Says On The Tin!
I was looking for a practical, presentable and affordable chess set that would appeal to both myself and kids, namely my niece and nephew. I do play chess a lot, but I'm also a Super Mario fan. I bought this chess set for personal and casual use but with my niece and nephew in mind since they've recently taken an interest in chess. My existing chess set is not really suitable for kids though as it's too large, heavy and expensive. Thankfully, this Super Mario-themed chess set is free of such inconveniences, and because it features iconic characters as opposed to generic shapes for pieces, it holds my niece and nephew's interest much longer than a classic chess set ever could. The tin box that holds the chess board and pieces is a real delight for collectors such as myself, and the inclusion of a "window" in which you can see the main characters is a nice touch. I do have one minor complaint though: The pieces themselves are packed in two flimsy, yet bizarrely stubborn plastic containers and both containers include hollows in which the pieces sit rather snugly--in fact, too snugly... Supposedly those hollows are designed to keep the pieces from coming loose while the chess set is displayed upright in the tin box; however, they fit so tightly that removing or replacing them feels like something of an endurance test. I mean, when it comes to unpacking a (seemingly) portable chess set, I don't expect to spend several minutes (yes, literally minutes) removing pieces from two finicky containers in order to set them up on a board. At least they are somewhat easier to replace, but not by much and overall I'm left with the feeling that this chess set is less travel-friendly than it looks. It's kind of annoying that just to transport the thing to some place or legitimately display it inside the tin box I have to initially get into a scrap with the packaging. To be honest, it's such a hassle that when it comes to short-distance travelling, I'd rather simply ditch those plastic containers, put the pieces directly in the tin box and hold it flat during the journey. The pieces themselves though do feel very solid and are quite tough. Unlike the typical quality of wooden pieces from cheaper chess sets, these pieces have some weight and don't threaten to topple over if you so much as look at them thanks to their wide bases. On the collector enthusiast side of things, the pieces are pleasingly faithful to the characters they represent too. I critically examined each piece in detail and was pleased to see that even the most intricate of character details had been faithfully reproduced such as earrings, broaches, spikes, eyelashes and fingers. The chess board is perhaps the only weak link in an otherwise well designed product. It is of a decent size and rigid enough; but being made of card rather than wood, I do worry that it might get micro-dented by heavily dragged pieces--not that it has yet. Still, as a precaution, I'd feel inclined to urge young kids to not drag pieces but rather, lift and drop them on the board (as one should anyway) since I want this chess set to look good for display too. TL;DR Pros: > Authentically accurate and durable pieces > Box design and presentation > Great for display out of the box Cons: > Cardboard material for chess board raises minor concerns of long term durability > Stubborn plastic packaging makes setup and repacking a hassle Verdict: An excellent product, great value for money and ideal for kids learning to play chess. For Mario fans, collectors and kids I cannot recommend this chess set highly enough.

How far can your imagination take you.
Our granddaughter has been playing with this set for going on 2 years. She’s okay with playing chess but it’s the other games that she plays that makes it so special. The adventures that all the pieces have been thru are unbelievable! She takes them everywhere! Absolutely loves it! From the living room to the tub to her bedroom with they need a place to rest. It’s the sweetest thing. She’s 6 years old and has played with this more that any other toy she’s ever had. Totally worth its value in imagination alone!
