Underpowered but good for small projects
I found there was not enough power being supplied to the unit to get the wire hot enough which results in the wire cutting very slowly. Luckily I had some spare electrical parts and I connected a speed controller to a spare battery, that way I can now adjust the power and heat of the wire. There is also an adjustment screw under the base that tightens the wire because the wire will stretch as it heats or if you have a second pair of hands it helps if that person can put a little back pressure on the metal arm to keep the wire tight. You can't beat the price of this complete unit but it would be useful if it had a power controller. Overall I'm happy considering the cost of the unit.

Useful device for cutting foam for the inside of protective cases
Used this to cut foam in a firearm case. It works great, gets hot quickly and cuts like a hot knife through butter. I would recommend this device. the only thing negative comment I have is that the wires provided will stretch after a couple uses and get lose beyond what the adjustment can compensate for. this will effect the quality of your cut and will also let the wire to start cutting into the base it you are not watching carefully. I had to change wires more often than I anticipated.

Works for me!
This little rascal works like a charm on sheet styrofoam. The wire heats up quickly and makes short work of letters and shapes. I use it for making table top terrain for wargames and it does everything I ask. It came with two extra wires, and the tension on the wire is even adjustable. The table and the clearance from the arm to the wire could be larger, but for the bucks it can't be beat.

You get what you pay for
I only needed it for one project, and made it through it. But the wire stretches as you cut and gets pushed into and melts the plastic base if you aren't careful, or unaware of this issue. And there isn't much adjustment for the wire. But for the price i can't complain. If you want to use it for more than one project, I'd say just spend a little more for a better cutter, or make your own.

Get’s job done for $25!
It get’s the job done. It’s not great or bad. It cuts through Pink EVA foam. I am disappointed that they made it out of plastic. They wire tends to cut into the hole it comes out of. Other than that, it’s a good price for a Hotwire. Great for building D&D projects.

Kinda misses the mark, but still works for light use.
It works fairly well for cutting through styrofoam and thin craft foam as long as you don't drag it through too fast. The wire is quite weak and breaks easily if too much force is used. The wire needs to be more taut. It would cut straighter if the wire was tighter. My only other issue with it is that, the top is made of plastic, so when the wire stretches it melts the top. So the best course of action is to manufacture better quality wires that don't stretch and break so easily, then your product will work perfectly and get better reviews. Almost perfect, but just misses the mark with junk wires. All in all, I'm still pretty happy with this product. It works for cutting insulation foam down to size, so I can shape it with a file and sand paper. UPDATE: 30 gauge kanthal wire to replace the wire provided works like a dream! I may never need another wire again!

Sloppy and unreliable, but it's still better than a razor.
This might be more trouble than it is worth, but it still gets half its stars because... well, it cuts foam most of the time and is pretty much the cheapest option available. The wire holder is fatally flawed. There's no spring maintaining tension on the cutting wire, and it becomes slack when it heats up and expands. The adjustment screw doesn't have enough travel to take up the additional slack, so the wire just kind of wobbles around. This is the making for crooked cuts. The nice, flat stage suggests you could make right-angle cuts, which is simply not going to happen. Instead, when you push stock into the wire, it melts into its own deck. Worst of all is when the wire just loses contact or falls completely off, cools down, and gets stuck in your workpiece. It is endless frustration for poor results. So, it isn't great, but if you need fast, sloppy and unreliable cuts, well, this does work. It goes through EVA floor mats, and has no problem with 2" packing foam. It can be convinced to trim down a memory-foam mattress, even, but the results are sloppy. I'm not happy with it at all, but it got through all the jobs I threw at it done better than any other tool I had. It's like using a sawzall instead of band saw. I'd have been happier with a better product, but it kills me to spend so much money on what is just a wire stretched between two points. But it *did* work better than hacking at foam with a razor. Buy this if you need to chop up foam for non-pretty uses and are too cheap to buy something better. Do NOT buy this if you're expecting to do artsy things with it.

Only 50% Junk
It's okay--sort of, kinda. The cutting wire wasn't attached very well so we added a nut and bolt to improve the electrical connection. After cutting about half of the material required for our project the power supply burned out. We replaced the power supply with a slightly higher output unit we had on hand (a serendipitous event--it's not the sort of thing one usually has laying about.) Once the poor electrical connection and power supply issue were addressed the unit performed very well--that is to say the plastic base and the frame that holds the cutting wire worked once we replaced the electrical parts. If you consider it not as a foam cutter, but rather a collection of parts that will allow you to build yourself a foam cutter it's not a total waste of money. However if you are a normal person who doesn't want to spend time rebuilding a brand new tool, than you should save your money and either build one from scratch (there are many helpful videos available online) or plan on spending over $100 to get a well made tool.

Do not buy if you are in the UK.
This wire cutter will not work in the UK. It comes with a US power supply, even with an adapter it voltage is 120 rather than the UK standard of 240v. Do not buy if you are in the UK. As I couldn't get it to work I can't comment on it's actual cutting ability, but I can make educated comments on the appearance and probable performance of this cutter. The hot wire is 0.4mm and so would struggle (if cut at all) extruded polystyrene, which was my intended usage to this cutter. The cutting bed dips in the middle like a shallow dish. The cutting arm from which you hand the wire moves in the housing, meaning to get an accurate consistent cut you would be fighting the machine every step of the way. This is a £10 piece of kit with a £40 price tag.

Waste of money!!
This is not what you want for foam cutting, sculpting or such like projects. The wire itself is loose and doesn’t make straight cuts. Also as soon as you turn it on and cut, the wire itself a melting into the side of the platform it’s coming from because there is no guard on the table. No measurements, no guide, just a hot wire that barely hangs on the the handle. Do not buy this product, waste of money.

Heats up quick
Heats up very quick Easy to use Unfortunately the unit I received was rated at 120v, as everyone knows here in the UK its 240v. But, I have an adapter to step down the voltage, so that was lucky!

Its come with US 120v power adapter.
If you want to use you need pa 6v 1a with bullet end. Also yiu need to secure plastic frame by melting washer in.
