Great thermometer, but longer would be better
I bought this for general temperature measurements, as well as for cooking. I find it quite accurate (there are instructions to calibrate it using ice water and boiling water, but I found it within 1/2 degree, better than I would expect for a thermometer at this price). Overall I find it very useful for both cooking and non-cooking uses: I can measure the temp of the hot water from the tap to set my water heater temperature; check food in the refrigerator rather than buying a separate refer thermometer; check air temperature in a room, or the heating/cooling air from a register. And, of course, check whether the food in the oven is done. But I would like a long probe. This one is 3"; 4" would be better. The probe cap can be used as a sort of handle, but it doesn't work very well--the thermometer falls out! This happened while I was checking something in the oven, and the thermometer fell to the bottom of my 350deg oven. It lay there for about 10 seconds while I hustled around to find tongs to remove it. I was already grieving for my ruined thermometer when I discovered it still worked fine. Sio rugged? Yes! Water proof? I haven't submerged it yet but it's gotten steamed a few times, and splashed. The display has a sort of large bubble in it but it's still readable. And working. Pros: Accurate. Rugged. Versatile. Internal light helps in reading it. Can be calibrated, with the changes restorable to factory settings. Will record max and min temperatures (until turned off). Food grade (metal and plastic materials won't contaminate, nor be damaged by, food; it can be washed). Cons: A bit short. Needs good lighting and the right angle to read the display (the internal light helps). Takes about 10 seconds to report accurate temperature (I don't believe claims of "instant" on any similar thermometer: the probe has to heat up/cool down, and that always takes time!) If I ever lost this thermometer, I'd buy another one.

18 months and still going strong (update: dead at 2.5 years...)
I bought this to find a durable thermometer. While it has not be tested to my knowledge by someone put it through the dishwasher, certainly the waterproof served it well through many washings. The digits are large which is handy for elderly in-laws. As at least one other reviewer had noted, you can click the cover on to the back of the thermometer to make and extended handle but the connection isn't very tight. So it feels like the thermometer might easily fall out and thus plunge on to the grill or oven heating elements. Update (ten months later, i.e. 2 1/2 years after purchase...): The Thermometer has finally died. While washing it in the sink with a sponge the metal tube of the probe pulled out of the base. I was not pulling particularly hard on it, just a sponge wrapped around the the probe rubbing up and down its length. I presume wear and tear loosened whatever was grabbing the steel tube as the end of the tube that went in the base was smooth and machined. Towards the end of its life the thermometer had periodically suddenly stopped working, flashing lights and nonsensical codes. I initially thought it was broken or the batter was low but it appears instead that the battery was not maintaining good contact with the battery leads -- ultimately a paper shim inside to push the battery firmly against the contacts fixed it. I am deeply impressed by the peace of mind in having a thermometer that is waterproof. I don't have to worry about relatives or children wrecking the thing when they volunteer to help clean up after a house dinner or barbecue either by washing it under the water or by it getting covered in some sauce or liquid while waiting to be washed.

Already Calibrated -- Works Well
I bought this one because it could be calibrated, and could take both ice water and boiling water. (I wanted to check the calibration on a few other thermometers that could not be immersed.) This one was within 0.5 degrees F at both freezing and boiling temperatures, already. No further calibration adjustment was needed. It is now, temporarily, sitting on top of a picture frame just below my thermostat. (So far, the thermostat consistently reads 1 degree higher.) After that calibration is done, it will live in a kitchen drawer and earn its keep by checking that chicken breasts are fully cooked. Seems to be sturdy and well made. There is no hinge to break. I was surprised to see a good gasket on the battery-compartment door.

Pretty Good, But...
Decent thermometer. Very accurate--I tried the ice bath calibration, and it already read out at 32.1 F. No need to be calibrated! However, I've yet to establish a higher temperature range standard for this, since I have nothing to hold a fixed temperature in that higher range (I use this for coffee making, and need a 165-210 F range calibration). It appears to be made well and is highly accurate, however... 1. The blue LED light goes off VERY quickly after you hold the on/off button to activate it. Lame. 2. The LCD screen can't be read from any angle other than straight down. Lame. 3. The probe is very short. Eh. 4. The case (sheath for the probe) is VERY hard to get on and off. So hard, I've almost cut my wrist open trying to get it off. I currently keep in on loosely. This is BAD, 5. The lanyard serves no purpose for 99.9% of those who use this. Eh. I have yet to try this on meat, but I suspect it is highly accurate during cooking, as well. If you're looking for a well built, accurate probe thermometer, this is it--if you can look over the few downfalls of this item. Overall, a B-!
