Fantastic coffee maker, with one important usage tip
I'm an engineer who has worked from my home office for more than 20 years, and coffee is an important part of my day. I typically brew either 6 or 7 pots of coffee at home per week, and I have e-cycled more than my share of coffee brewers that failed after a year or two. I invested in this model after reading a lot of online reviews and reading its documentation, and I'm quite happy with its quality and the quality of the coffee it brews. As an engineer, I appreciate designs that anticipate the need for preventive maintenance as well as repair. The Moccamaster is easily disassembled for cleaning, and easy disassembly also means easy repair. Removable parts fit together with simple, clean interlocks, gravity, and (in one case) friction, and the friction fit drip nozzle arm is metal-to-silicone, not cheap plastic. After months of heavy use, I can see no signs of wear, nor is it becoming loose or sloppy. The coffee tastes great. I would not consider myself a coffee scholar, but I know what I like, and I care enough to purchase whole-bean coffee from a local roaster and to grind each day's coffee fresh in the morning, not in batches. Insulated thermal carafe, rather than an actively warmed pot, is the ONLY way to go if you care about coffee flavor, unless you are sharing with others and will drink a whole pot in a short time. Coffee that is continuously heated after brewing will rapidly acquire a stale, burned taste. It's vile! This carafe is very well insulated. I brew a pot in the morning, fill an insulated mug right away, then replace the open brewing cap on the carafe with the thermal-sealed lid. The remaining coffee in the carafe is still nicely warm at noontime or even at the end of my workday and remains drinkably warm until I finish the last of it in the evening. (For reference, I don't mind if the coffee is just warm rather than staying hot -- it's worth it to avoid the stale taste.) The fully sealed thermal lid is important, and without it the coffee would not stay warm for long. There are some minor things I think could be improved about this model, and one "important usage tip" that I will share with other purchasers here. First, I wish there was a way to slow the rate of water flow into the grounds, to brew a slightly stronger pot of coffee. That's personal preference, of course. This brewer does a nice, smooth brew using water at the correct temperature, but since I take the trouble to buy good coffee, I'd prefer if the water spent more time in the grounds to absorb a bit more of that richness. Second, I'd like to see a pouring lip on the carafe. The carafe is made of spun stainless steel, and the pouring rim is a perfect circle. It works fine with the open brewing cap in place, but once you swap for the thermal cap, you have to unscrew that just the right amount to avoid a wider stream that can miss the cup. The circular lip doesn't really help to narrow the stream, whereas I think a modest outward bend in the lip, opposite the handle, would take care of this problem. I've done some sheet metal work as a hobby and have considered trying this as a DIY modification, but since it's stainless steel I'm nervous about deforming the threaded fitting for the lid. Finally, I'll offer this tip about a problem I encountered, and how I've solved it. Every so often, I found that the coffee would overflow the filter cone and make a mess all over the countertop and floor. At first, I thought the valve under the filter was becoming clogged, but careful cleaning didn't solve the problem. My next theory was that the filter paper was pressing too tightly against the inside of the brewing cone and blocking flow, so I checked to make sure there was a gap at the bottom of the filter paper (there are small plastic ribs inside the cone designed to assure clearance around the sides of the filter). This still didn't solve the problem. I tried varying the grind, thinking perhaps I was grinding too fine and the coffee itself was obstructing the flow, but that didn't help, either. I finally figured out what was happening and solved it. The problem was *too much* gap at the bottom of the filter, not too little! The rate of water flow in this brewer is such that the coffee filter *almost* fills to its brim during normal operation. When there's too much gap below the filter paper, the pool of water and coffee grounds touches the drip nozzles, and there is enough volume displaced that it can overflow the paper cone. *Then* the exit hole becomes plugged, and you've got a mess. The solution was simple: When placing the coffee and filter into the brewing chamber, gently press it down to be sure it is seated fully, and that the filter's seam is bent aside to allow it to settle all the way into the plastic housing. I've not had a single overflow since I figured this out. Aside from the very minor quibbles (not being able to increase brew strength, and the lack of a shaped pouring spout on the carafe), I'm quite happy with the Moccamaster overall, and I am glad I finally spent the money to get a durable, well-designed coffee maker. I debated between four stars and five stars, but the two minor quibbles were not enough to deduct a star from a product that is working very well for me and which I use almost every day.

Amazing coffee maker for daily use
We use this every day, replacing an old worn out drip brewer from 10+ years ago. Figured it was time for an upgrade to a simpler machine that’ll last us many, many years to come. FYI, our machine came with the OLD carafe, not the new glass lined carafe shown in the photos. Pros: - Can be used with a smart plug for a far more advanced setup with scheduling. - Brews an excellent cup of coffee. If you can use a scale, do so. 69-71 grams of coffee for 1.25L of water is a good ratio. You can tweak to get a stronger or lighter brew with your grinds and extraction. - Easy to clean and maintain, descale every 100 batches or so depending on how hard your water is. - Urnex TABZ or CAFIZA work great for removing oils and stains in carafes. - Workflow is easy to manage whether you prep night before or setup in the morning. - Serviceable with Mochamaster offering most parts to replace by the user. - Latest model includes a smaller, right angle plug (US model) that makes countertop use much easier. - Polished silver really disappears if you have a lighter kitchen as we do, versus say, black, red, or stone grey. Cons: - If you need programmability, look elsewhere, or use a smart plug (which is arguably better anyway). - Lots of parts, but not over the top, just something to keep in mind. - Simple machine with no bells and whistles to adjust anything, but expect a Gold cup of coffee (SCAA rating) which arguably doesn’t need adjusting. - It’s pretty tall, but so are many machines now. So keep that in mind for under cabinet use. - Approved sticker (see photo) is lame. Hand applied and crooked which I guess gives it ‘character’?!? - Wish they had more color selection in this model.

Almost perfect auto-drip coffee.
This coffee machine makes nearly perfect coffee. Seriously, the best out of any auto-drip machine I've ever used. The only two nits that I have with it are that the plastic base that goes under the carafe is sort of flimsy and doesn't tolerate being moved across the counter without coming out of place, so it's best to find a fixed location, and the lid for the carafe itself has a gasket that's not particularly prone to staying where it should. But after dealing with tepid coffee and machines that oveflow themselves all over my counter from Walmart (Mr. Coffee and Black & Decker), I feel like the Moccamaster is worth it despite a couple of issues that could probably be fixed with a minor revision. Using a meat thermometer, I was able to verify that the temperature of the water flowing through the brew basket with the Moccamaster is 205 degrees F, which is almost exactly where it needs to be in order to brew proper coffee. My previous machine, a Black & Decker, started out at only 196 when I bought it, but made acceptable coffee for a $50 system, until it didn't. Where most people praise the Moccamaster's design is that it has a solid heating element that lasts a very long time without serious trouble whereas some of the big box store machines have one that gets iffy in a year or two. By the end of the B&D, two years later, it was only reaching 180.5 F coming out of the brew basket, which is just not sufficient or acceptable, but perhaps humorously about 10 degrees F hotter than where my Mr. Coffee was at 2 years. Pay attention to the Moccamaster owner's manual. Especially how to descale the machine. DO NOT USE VINEGAR. Follow the instructions with actual coffee maker descaler. It's not expensive. If you do not descale as instructed, any machine can die or start making nasty coffee. It's also important to clean the brew basked, carafe, and other parts that come into contact with the coffee after each use. You should also take note of how much coffee (grounds) to use. The included scoop is two US Tbsp, and the cups given on the reservoir are not standard American cups (6 ounces), but rather 4 oz (European), so there is an included chart. Basically, 10 is 7 level scoops, 8 is 6, 6 is 4, and 4 is 3. If you're using a standard Tablespoon, then double the number of scoops, leveling each one as you go. The system uses #4 cone filters, and I've been using Brew Rite from Walmart. I noticed no discernible difference in taste between the 3 Moccamaster samples included in the box and the Brew Rite. Brew Rite filters are about 4x less expensive. The instructions recommend wetting the filters. Well, if you do it with hot water, this works, but cold water doesn't. I tried it with cold and what ended up happening was a basket overflow. Whoopsie. I've tasted it both ways and can't tell you there's any difference in flavor, so I've just gone back to doing what I've always done, which is using dry filters. Overall, I do recommend buying this machine. I got mine from Warehouse Deals in Like New condition to save some money and it's working well so far.

really hot and excellent tasting coffee
After much hesitation, I decided to finally give this thing a try. We previously had a Cuisinart Grind & Brew, but it was starting to show its age and we'd never been particularly impressed with it. The biggest thing you need to know: this really does make really, really hot and excellent tasting coffee. I didn't really believe the coffee maker could make this much of a difference. My eyes have been opened. Otherwise, pros for me: - The carafe feels solid and pours smoothly (no back-pouring like with my old Cuisinart). - It brews fast - I didn't time it, but certainly within 5 minutes as claimed. - There's basically no steam, so it's safe to keep under cabinets. - It's fairly compact, and looks cool. - It has no features at all, other than brewing coffee once you turn it on, and the automatic pause if you remove the carafe. This may not be a pro for some, but I like the simplicity. Cons: - Many of the parts are black plastic, and feel fairly flimsy. I'm worried about their longevity, but really it's more generally disappointing in such an expensive appliance. This is the only reason this isn't a five-star review. - It doesn't shut off automatically, you have to flip the switch. (I understand this may be more of a cosmetic thing, and the machine is "on" but essentially shut down once the brew is done. Still, a minor annoyance.) - The auto pause switch is part of the base and seems to be a touch fiddly, or at least it managed to defeat my wife's first attempt to make coffee.

Moccamaster + quality bean grinder + scale + quality coffee beans = a superior cup of coffee!
This is truly the best coffeemaker! I never really thought that a coffeemaker would have such an impact on the quality of a cup of coffee. I figured it was solely based on the quality of the beans. Wow, I was wrong! After our coffeemaker broke down I did some research on different machines and found the Moccamaster received thousands of positive reviews. The price was higher than I anticipated paying for a coffeemaker, but I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Moccamaster 10 cup with the thermal carafe. Although I am not a regular coffee drinker, I do know delicious coffee when I taste it. My husband is a daily coffee drinker and I have never heard him say “this coffee is amazing”, except when we go to specific coffee shops. This machine is so very simple to use, no bells or whistles, just straight forward and to the point. It seriously makes an amazing cup of coffee. Perfect temperature, perfect flavour. Pair it with a high-quality bean, a small scale (It's really super helpful in making a consistently good cup), a quality grinder and you have yourself a delicious cup of coffee. We discovered that filling the machine with water to the 8 cup line and using 60 grams of whole beans is the perfect ratio for us. My husband finally uttered the words, “damn, this is amazing”. It’s also a bonus that this machine is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

What took me so long. Worth every cent
I got this machine last week, yeah really pricey. I looked into this machine a few years ago, but the price scared me a bit. I have been through so many other high end machines, Bunn - Junk, Brazen - Bigger Junk. They sound so wonderful with such great features and then they break down because they are too complicated. The Bunn didn't even work when I got it, and my friend had the same experience. We both replaced them 3 times and eventually gave up. the Brazen lasted 2 months and started making half amounts. What I really love about this machine is all the great features it has. Which features you ask? Exactly. OK enough riddles. It has no features. Does what it is supposed to do, make a fantastic cup of coffee, quickly and cleanly. The more features, the more can go wrong, especially with mass produced products. This product is hand made by the way. Nothing to clean up after. Coffee is piping hot. Coffee made in minutes, and even looks great making it. Simple to make. Pour water, put coffee, turn switch. Drink yummy coffee. The only criticism I could make is the fact that the carafe could be a little better designed. Maybe a bit of a funnel for the coffee to direct through. The lid for the carafe could also have a release switch so you don't have to take it off every time you pour. I can't see what can go wrong with this machine to be honest. It's so simple.

LOVE IT!!
I've only had this machine for about a week now but can say, with complete confidence, that it is the best coffee maker I've ever had. I was apprehensive about getting it for a couple of different reasons. First, the price. Never have I spent so much on a drip coffee maker and didn't know if I could justify it. Second, it doesn't have a few of the features that I thought I was looking for. I.e. Preset/auto-off options. And lastly, the concerns mentioned in reviews regarding the heat of the coffee--mainly that you don't get a really good hot cup. I knew that I had made the right choice after brewing the first pot. This is by far the best coffee I've ever had. Ever. I followed the recommendations re: how much coffee to use (ground fresh from my Barrata grinder--also highly recommended) and the result was a rich, flavourful, HOT cup of coffee. I initially thought that I'd have to switch the lid to the travel one, but I've never had to. The thermal carafe and brew-thru lid keep the coffee hot for a LONG time. As for the preset option, I can say that I don't miss it. I actually like my routine in the morning of grinding and brewing my coffee. Literally the ONLY thing I miss is the 'auto off' feature. I'm a bit confused as it does say that this machine has that feature, but it does not. It would be nice to set it up and be able to walk away. But in the grand scheme of things, it's such a minor thing that I'm not that fussed about it.

Love it!
It’s everything the manufacturer says it is! Great tasting coffee, we use TH Med grind & paper filters. I also use filtered water from the refrigerator dispenser to keep the scale build-up down due to hard water. I’ve de-scaled once already but nothing really to speak of came out. Very simple to clean and parts are available on Amazon if you have an oops! My only negative would be the plastic plate the stainless steel carafe sits on with our model. Not a heater and just sort of a little slot to get it in, otherwise the unit doesn’t sit flat on the counter. Not a game-changer, just a bit annoying if it falls off, otherwise I’d definitely recommend this model and Moccamaster overall.
