Hours of fun - for people that enjoy long board games

The game has a lot of different mechanics, discounts, bonuses and calculations to keep track of, so only people that are willing to spend hours in a game that requires thinking hard, will enjoy this. But that being said, this is one of the best games I have played. It is engaging, it constantly makes you think, not just about your game, but if you want to maximize your tasks, about your opponents' moves as well. It is a complex game, but for board game geeks, it is definitely one of the best games out there. It has the complexity of Terraforming Mars, but is slightly shorter and more fast paced than the full game.

Fantastic game with a fun solo mode!

Such a good addition to the Terraforming Mars game line! This is a standalone game that is a more slimmed down version of Terraforming Mars the board game that focuses more on card play and collecting a few resources. Still has great strategy, challenging, and fun art work on the cards, this is definitely one of my favorites. It also has a great solo mode as well that is so easy to follow and play through!

Excellent game with upgraded boards

Some buyers say they didn’t get the essential upgrades individual player boards but my my Amazon copy of the game with them and the other extra components. This game is a blast to play, even solo or coop. Does require a bit of a learning curve but far far less than the original version. I won my first competitive game by a single point. And I’m finding it to be addictive in solo mode, particularly with the tougher alternative version on BoardGameGeek (BGG).. My wife is not a board game fan (unless you count Mah Jongg and Scrabble) but she enjoyed the challenging coop game (we won!) and now wants to play the competitive version (with the BGG variant that doubles each increase in the global parameters—but not the single TR reward) to shorten the game).

Better than Terraforming Mars

I am NOT a fan of the Terraforming Mars game. My big complaint is that victory is almost always a factor of experience. Yes, experience helps in any game, but that is more true for TM, novice players have no chance against experienced players. When a friend pulled out Terraforming Mars Ares I initially balked at playing a Terraforming Mars variant because of my negative experiences with the original game. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Ares has many of the good things about Terraforming Mars but less of what I found objectionable. It also helps that the setup and game play are much shorter and easier. You can setup and teach in less than 10 minutes, and play the entire game in under an hour. I think this is an excellent game for people who like Terraforming Mars but want something that plays quicker and isn't too difficult for new players. And, if you are like me, not a fan of the original, you might find this is an alternative that gives you some of the experience of TM without the downsides.

Terraforming Mars Lite might be a better title

For people who are intimately familiar with Terraforming Mars, this will seem like a familiar game with fewer complications. For people who have no clue what Terraforming Mars is, this is a great game that teaches people about how Mars could be terraformed in a card game with simultaneous actions. This is great as a 2-player game, though it is even better as a 4-player game. Since I only own licenses to Terraforming Mars on Steam and Google Play, having Ares Expedition on my game shelf feels right. If I could only own either Terraforming Mars (with all of its expansions and upgrades) or Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, I'd buy Ares Expedition and be very happy with it. A fun part about this game is choosing which one phase out of five to play. Since each player does this, there could be one to the number of players different options available (which is why playing with four people is better than with two people). If all players choose the same phase, not as much happens on the turn (since the phases chosen indicate the abilities of the round). The purchasing mechanic is nice since the steel and titanium accumulate over time and add discounts to the card prices (without resetting the steel or titanium amounts). This is different than in Terraforming Mars. Having a specific Action phase is great since that allows for triggering the various actions on the cards and/or on the player board (like funding an ocean or forest). I noticed we didn't play the Action phase much in the 2-player game. I'm very thankful for Branden and Lexi from All Aboard Gamer teaching us the game at Dice Tower East. They did a great job and we tried to buy the game there, but it was sold out. I look forward to receiving the three expansions that are due to be released soon.

Bessere Version eines großartigen Spiels!

Terraforming Mars war so ein Spiel, welches zu Beginn meiner BoardgameGeek-Zeit sehr hoch im Kurs war. Es ist mehr oder weniger an mit vorbeigegangen, da es mir zu dem Zeitpunkt noch viel zu komplex war. Irgendwann habe ich mir dann die iOS-App geholt und dank des großartigen Tutorials recht schnell in das Spiel gefunden und konnte so gegen eine AI spielen. Der Solo-Modus des normalen Spiels wirkte nie wirklich interessant auf mich. Als dann kürzlich "Ares Expedition" erschien und ich mir ein Playthrough angeschaut habe, musste ich dann doch zugreifen. Der sehr viel schnellere Aufbau, hochwertigeres Material und bessere Solo-Modus sagten mir sofort zu. Kann man ein tolles Spiel noch besser machen? Jawohl, Ares Expedition hat es in meinen Augen geschafft. Ich kann es auf jeden Fall jedem empfehlen, der TM noch nicht besitzt und einen guten Engine Builder mag!

Challenging but engaging.

Bought it after reading that it was a shorter version of the highly regarded Terraforming Mars. Ha our first game (two player) took over 3 hours. Third game got down to under two. Despite not particularly looking for such a long game we are really enjoying it. Hooked and hoping experience will get us down to 90 mins per game.

Excelente juego, e igual calidad

Excelente juego, mecánicas fáciles de entender y muy emocionante. Los componentes de la versión de coleccionista sin duda valen la pena. Lo conseguí en menos de 800, toda una ganga.
