Sturdy & Light Weight

These are rated for bariatric weight, and are much lighter than my old pair of Drive forearm crutches. The old pair lasted for YEARS without issue. I sincerely like them, but the coating on the cuffs has split on both crutches. I've only had them for 6 weeks. ???? I must allow Drive to provide a remedy

Great so far

I like these a lot, so far. I think that some buyers may be confused about the spring steel used for the forearms. The forearms are meant to grip the arm firmly about 3 finger widths below the elbow. They can seem to be too small, but they are meant to grip the arm tightly and to spring outward with the more pressure that is applied. I may have some issues with using them with a fuller, thicker jacket but other than that they feel fine. They do leave some light marks similar to a very faint bruise, though, with me. But, I have delicate skin so that may be why. There are videos showing how to use these crutches online. You should view them. The crutch on the opposite side of the bad leg should move with the bad leg. And, if you are going up steps, you should use your good leg first and then bring the bad leg up. The crutch on the opposite side stays with the bad leg. Hopefully you have physical therapists that have instructed you properly on how to adjust and use these crutches. Update: after a few months, the cuffs are starting to peel slightly in one small place. If anyone knows where replacements can be obtained, please mention in a review.

Strong and sturdy. Not light weight

Top thing you need to know: These things were built to hold up under significant weight loads. As such they are built very sturdy and are not light weight. They are not super heavy, but they are definitely not 'sporty' light weight crutches. I bought these for my wife while she was recovering from a significant broken upper leg boke breakage. While she is not in the weight range these were really designed for, I knew they would be built stronger. So many other crutches you find here get bad reviews for breaking under different loads in fairly short time periods. If I ever had to buy something more, these would be my go to. However, my wife was starting to say after 6 months of use that she wishes they were lighter. But she doesn't need them any more as she has healed nicely. For first timers trying to find the right crutches, but worried that the forearm type isn't for them, you should take a look at videos on Youtube on how to use them. Several physical therapists have done simple videos showing the right way to use forearm crutches in general (including the big scary thing: Stairs). We also stumbled on a guy showing how to use the lighter (and far more expensive) type outdoors on hiking trails. He was just plowing along and his camera operator had trouble keeping up. That is when I realized he only had one leg. He can use them, so can you! Also take a look at the seller's actual website (not amazon page). This is all they do (medical equipment like this). Not just some reseller sourcing the cheapest things from anywhere. I will do business with this company again if I should ever need to.

Sturdy to a point

The crutches initially felt sturdy but after two weeks of steady every day walking the crutch cuff on my right had issues with rubber peeling. Thank have used forearm crutches for 37 years. This is a common issue however this shouldn’t happen after 2 weeks. Also the bolts were loose. I tightened the bolts and taped the cuff. Also has to replace the rubber tips. The started to wear and peel around the edges.

They're ok- but be warned!

They're alright for the price, but since my insurance does not cover crutches anymore, I'm forced to buy this equipment from my own pocket, these just don't hold up well, i have had 3 pairs of these so far, 2 of those I've had the steel bodies of them snap clean in half, the handles always come loose and there is no way to tighten them back up, the vinyl on the cuff always tears, leaving your forearm exposed to rough sheet metal internals. These are crap. My doctors say that i am overly mobile for the disability i have, and therefore put way more strain on my equipment than a " normal" disabled person. But this equipment should hold up way better than it does if insurance is going to stop covering durable medical equipment that is needed to function day to day.

Pros and Cons

My insurance won’t cover loftstrand crutches like these, so this was a very cost friendly option. Some things you might need to know: As someone who is 5’4” and 110 lbs, these are not really made for me. The cuffs are way to big for my arms and there’s no easy way to bend them or adjust them. This means that my arms wobble (which i was trying to avoid while switching from a standard cane) and I can’t reach with my arms without the crutches falling and my arm is still wobbly when walking. The cuff to handle adjustment doesn’t adjust far enough down to a comfortable setting. There is tremendous strain on the wrist when using these, especially if you suffer from arthritis or eds. There’s no spring or shock absorber, so it’s rough when you are going a bit faster and the pressure goes right through your arms. Although it has features to reduce the loudness, the clicking is still obnoxiously loud. They are pretty heavy for me, which makes it hard to maintain stamina. Not all of these factors will apply to you, but I’m putting it here for anyone who needs it. Regardless, they are affordable, they do their job, they are sturdy, and they bring me confidence to go on walks without a wheelchair.

Well built but the forearm cuffs are small.

Forearm cuffs are too small for me and they are made of spring steel so don't purchase thinking you'll be able to bend them out. Would suggest that your forearm be no more than 11-12 inches around measuring 3-4 inches below the inside bend of your arm (mine are 13 and there was no chance). Probably less than 11-12 if you plan on wearing a heavy coat in the winter. Searched for larger replacement cuffs online but had no luck.

Small arm cuff!

Great crutches, sturdy and strong. They were rated for 500 lbs. but my arm would not fit in the cuff so they were unusable for me. I do not weigh anywhere near 500! I was very angry to find out they were non- returnable! That should have been stated in the ad and then I would not have purchased them!!! Now I have the hassle of trying to sell them. I have had problems with the quality of Drive products in the past, I shouldn’t have been surprised I guess.

Never use armpit crutches again!

Honestly, I get that these are a bit more money, but after a day or two on regular crutches, it simply is not worth it compared to these. I would actually advise every family keep a set of these on hand for inevitable spills and injuries. These are the "bariatric" ones, meaning the arm cuffs are large - great for bulky winter wear. If you need them smaller, we just threw a couple of thick rubber bands across the lips (the fat ones from the broccoli or the longer wide ones) to create a loop that in a few days, decreased the size of the opening. Not only are they more comfortable, and stable, but they have the added advantage of 'hanging on' when you need to pick something up or carry something. Only regret is that we did not get them sooner, will be donating the armpit crutches, immediately!

Too small.

This item is rated for up to 500lbs .I weigh 320 lbs and I can't fit my arms into the opening for arms .and they are made of a material that won't stretch.

Superior Comfort and Function

Stylish (as far as crutches go) and most importantly sturdy. The mechanisms for height adjustment are easy to use and the cuffs and handles are comfortably coated in a thick plastic. Highly recommend for anyone with mobility issues.
