Shop Apartment Project - Great Boxes for Heavy Duty Use
I recently purchased a small shop to work on cars in. The shop is about 45 minutes from my house, so I wanted to add in a little apartment in the event I decided to work late. The existing shop had boxes that I have been using inside the living area, but I needed stronger boxes for the shop. That is where these come in. Pros: - Durability: These things are quality boxes. The difference between these and the blue, nail in kind is like night and day. These will hold up very well in a shop environment. - Ease of Use in Tight Spaces: Unlike the nail in type where you need sapce to hammer in the nails, these can fit in existing walls very easily. Just cut the drywall (or whatever material you have for your wall) slightly smaller than the box so it holds it in place, then screw it into the stud. - Marked location for wires: The wire pass throughs are marked for 12 or 14 guage wire, with an offset for each. Not something necessary, but it was a nice touch. Cons: - I found it difficult to get the box to stay in place while I screwed it in. The screws want to pull the box back. When trying to use these on open walls, you'll need to really hold it in place. It would be nice to have a set of teeth on the side against the stud to hold it in place. - Pass-throughs: These are the kind that you can press a wire in and have it lock in place. This is nice to keep it in while you are wiring, but I'm not a fan of these. They are hard to use and even harder to push excess length back in. They were also very hard to snap off if you wanted to remove them - Price: If these are not on sale or marked down, the $9 price is a pricier than going with the hammer on style. I got mine at around$2.50 ea, which was good pricing. This is also true if you are not needing anything too strong. - Useage: These are made for wood studs. If you need something that attaches to other material or do not have access to the stud, these are not for you. For my shop project, these work great! I know these are strong enough to withstand the constant use and potential hits that you find in a shop environment without breaking. I'd probably use these for walls that I'd have to cut sheetrock as well. This is a good buy in my opinion.

Awesome.
If you need an electrical box in the middle of a wall, this is perfect. I used a stud finder to locate the stud, traced the box on the wall, cut with a multitool (razor would work, too), and screwed this in. No patching the wall afterward or anything. Looks great. 5+ stars!!!

Best electrical box on the market
Unbelievably easy to instal, clean, quick, and great value. Very durable as well. Punch out spots aren’t messy holes, they are push thoughts and make holding the wire very easy.

Will Buy Again
First time using this brand and I do like the ability to use for new construction and installations after wall material has been installed. Based on my initial use I plan on buying again.

Electrical wall pass through project
Single Product Review: Madison new/old work boxes Discussion: These boxes are the best for outlets/electrical boxes which require structural strength. As these were going to house outlets, which I planned on plugging/unplugging often, I wanted extra strenth, especially the 2-gang holding both the twist lock plug (NEMA L5-15P), and a switch. These were easy to mount, using the included screws. Cut the dry wall a little on the tigher side, so that it will hold the box in place as it is screwed to the wall stud. Project Summary: I have a temporary solar/PV battery backup project in the garage, and I wanted to use the generated solar power inside the house. Previously has an extension cord running through the door to the garage, but that's not safe for a lot of reasons, so I wired up a couple of electrical boxes, and wired in a cut-out switch. The inside connections are a standard wall outlet, and the outside connection to the inverter is via a twist lock plug, for extra security. Project Recommendations: 1) I looked at a lot of generator inlet receptacles, but most were 20-30 amp, and I don't need that large (standard 15A), so I used a NEMA locking L5-15P instead. 2) As this was going to be a twist lock plug, I wanted to attach the electrical box to a stud if at all possible (vs. using the electrical box which clamps onto dry-wall). The Madison Electric Products boxes were perfect. I used a single gang on the inside box, and for the outside, I used a 2-gang so that I could also fit a cut-off switch. I mounted the 2-gang box rotated 90 degrees to the normal orientation for two reasons: a) I could screw it directly into the horitzontal stud, and b) I could mount the plug on the bottom, and the switch on the top. 3) When it comes to electrical parts, I generally go with Leviton, which I have had great success with. The only item I got that was a different brand was the right angle plug (which Leviton also offers, I just didn't see it when placing the order, otherwise I would have ordered that one instead). Conclusion: All the products listed in the review, and used for this project I am rating 5-stars. Nice design
I like the fat it mounts with included screw set at a 45 degree angle. To replace box simply set it at desired depth AGAINST a stud, and screw in place. A skilled DIY'er can install without damage to surrounding drywall or paneling. Working as advertised in my daughter-in-laws home so far.

Easy to install
This was very easy to install. I needed to replace a single gang box in my 1950s home. This worked perfect. It is miles better than those old work boxes that have the tabs, I have always hated those. This is so much more sturdy. I highly recommend ????

great value
decent plastic box that does the job

It does the job
I installed this box to replace an existing metal single gang box (that was a real challenge to remove without overly enlarging the hole). I wanted to replace it with a plastic box in order to improve communications to a new "smart" light switch. The plastic would allow better wireless communication than a grounded metal box. I liked the new plastic box for being fairly deep, and the angled screws for mounting made the mounting easy. The hard part was in dealing with the cable clamping plastic restraints inside each of the 4 box cable openings. When I separated the plastic bits to allow me to pull cable into the box, it was way too difficult and I ended up having to totally break all the small plastic bits out. They didn't give up without a fight but it was worth it in the end. So, I recommend this box for being a reasonable plastic re-work box where most are metal even though I'm not happy with the cable restraint aspect. The price is quite reasonable.

Great for old work at a stud
I needed to add a box in a 98-year-old lathe & plaster wall, and this was exactly the right solution. Cut the plaster and lathe with a multi-crafter tool (avoids breaking the plaster bond with the lathes compared to using a drywall or sabre saw), pre-trimmed the outer insulation from the end of 14-2 NMD-90, threaded it through the kind of strange clamp, positioned the box, screwed it in and bingo - not even any paint touch-up needed. It's nice that you can use the box itself to trace the exact opening on the wall. A lot of those metal rework boxes have bits that stick out further than the box sides, but this is all smooth with rounded corners. Keep the inside thickness of your wall in mind - this box is deep and narrow - 3 1/2 deep on the outside so fine for drywall on one or two sides of a 2x4 wall, but maybe not if you have lathe & plaster with a lot of plaster pushed through the gaps in the lathe. On the plus side there's lots of room for wiring (18.5 cu in). But... The part I skipped over is the cruddy drywall screws that come with the box. The absolute cheapest, worst screws they could've included, and @#$ Phillips head, of course, so lots of cam-out unless you really lean on the driver, which will probably push your alignment out. Others have commented on working the screws in and out of the box a bit cause they're stiff. Yeah... So I replaced those crud screws with #6 Roberston (square drive) 1 1/2 inch screws with a bit less aggressive thread, and dabbed a touch of silicone plumbers grease on each. Went through the PVC and into the wood easily and no issues with alignment. I used another three of them for a different project in a porch ceiling, and in this case was able to drill a 7/8 hole in the side (not the stud side, obviously!) near the bottom for a 1/2 inch ENT connector. A bit weird, but still lots of room inside for the outlet and wiring. I'm sure you could also drill in the bottom, but not the ends. Drilling PVC needs slow speed and patience or you'll either melt the plastic or slip and break something (maybe your fingers). So minus 1 star for those screws but otherwise a well thought out and well made product, and I've bought some more to have on hand at the current good price.

Great option for adding an outlet.
Fits and works well. Doesn't allow for lazy ground wire hookup to the box though. If you need to daisy chain something else to it better go with good old metal box. The 45° screw is a nice feature but very hard to tighten. Had to use manual torque driver to tighten it up - was rubbing and squeaking against stud when attached with 18V electric torque driver.

Beaucoup de place
Très bonne boîte électrique qui peut facilement servir de boîte de jonction en plus d'y installer un interrupteur. Bon achat.
