Amp up your pie embellishments !

I purchased these cutters to cut pastry leaf shapes to decorate holiday pies. The nice assortment of shapes can be used for multiple holidays and are nicely packaged in a tin which can be stored easily. I simply tuck mine into my pie plates when not in use. The pastry leaves I made this morning came out very precisely. I recommend that you refrigerate your pastry leaves for about 15 minutes and then embellish them with veining using the dull side of a small knife. Brush lightly with an egg wash then sprinkle with sugar before baking on a cookie sheet covered with parchment. Allow to cool completely and then arrange on top of cooled pie. I’m experimenting by freezing them on parchment in airtight containers before baking them. These cutters have a rolled metal top which could possibly retain moisture after washing leading to rust. I recommend that you place them rolled side up into an oven safe pan and allow them to heat in your oven for several minutes before storing in order to evaporate any residual water.

Love the shapes

While the picture doesn't really show you how tiny these cutters are.... they were beautiful and effective. I just didn't realize how small they were until I was fishing through the box (with other items in it) and thought "what is this?" and then I realized what it was. Hmm, rather small but they work well for what I had in mind. The largest cutter is less than 2 inches (it's stated in the description but of course I didn't pay attention to that...) It was a little hard to push down on the cutters as they don't have a "comfort edge" so they kind of hurt your fingers when you're punching them through fondant- solution: use my fondant rolling pin to push down on them instead. It was also a little hard to get the cut flower out of the cutter and required some poking and prodding with at tool, powdered sugar didn't help and neither did a little shortening, but I'm a bit of an amateur so suggestions are welcome! I do like the size gradation between the similar flowers, other sets of flower cutters have make strange looking flowers when I layer the next smallest size flower on top of the next size up. These cutters cut flower shapes in a natural size gradation and the cutouts don't look strange or like something is missing when they are placed together. They also have a little more detail than other cutters I've purchased. I like this because I don't need to cut as much detail in as I would have with other cutters. Overall though they are a nice addition to my fondant cutter collection and I will be using them a lot because they make pretty flowers.

small but good for babies

When I opened the package the cutters were WAY smaller than I expected, but I decided not to return them because of the variety of shapes in the set that I couldn't find anywhere else: fox, duck, fish, etc. I baked a set of graham crackers for my kid (15 months old) and it took FOREVER to use up all the dough because the shapes were so small. Plus side: I ended up with a lot of crackers. Down side: I never want to see another animal cracker again. However, once baked and in my little munchkin's hand, they are the perfect size. I didn't realize how much bigger the cutters were that I was using before and how much more difficult those crackers were for him to eat. These are just right for a baby's little hand and mouth (without being so small they're a choking hazard). And on top of that, he loves the animal shapes. He specifically looks for the fish and the fox in his snack box. So time consuming though it may be, these are now the go-to cookie cutters for animal crackers in our house. p.s. I only give 4 stars because while 7 of the cutters are distinctly shaped, 3 of them are not and just look like blobs rather than identifiable animals.

Nice cutters

I like these cutters but the middle size is not symmetrical. When you decorate the cookie it is very noticeable. Of course that is the size I want to use the most.

Good cutters, but be aware of inconsistent nominal sizing if looking to expand your set

These cutters do the job. But if you are looking to expand your leaf set with different sizes you should be aware that nominal sizing is inconsistent. I ordered this set of cutters described as "approximately 2-inch" size and the Mrs Anderson's set described as "approximately 1-inch" size, thinking that I would get a big set and a small set. I wanted to cut big and small leaves. It turns out they are the same product. So I have two sets of identical cutters. And I can't accuse either description of being dishonest because the cutters are irregular shapes that are about 1 inch WIDE and about 2 inches LONG so both companies could claim their description is true. I would've thought that nominal cutter sizing would be consistent but sadly it is not. I am giving this set the five-star review because these cutters are the size I expected based on the 2-inch description, and it is the other set which disappointed me.

Small, but good

Smaller than I anticipated, but still large enough to easily decorate whatever cookies I make. Honestly, if you are to decorate your cookies, I almost prefer the smaller cookies you get out of cutters this size. Two bites for most of them, so you never feel that weird 'too much' feeling half way through. They're good cutters, though a bit difficult to get the cut dough out of the cutter for most of the shapes. Really gotta wiggle/poke/squeeze. Edit: It's 2017, fall is here, and I've gotten my decorations down. These little guys sure are sturdy, as they are as perfect as they were on first use. Annoying to try and get them all on their little container so I'd suggest a baggie or other container.

Wonderful small-scale cutters in steel

Very difficult to find detail/small cutters in steel (typically tin which rusts easily), these are excellent quality and delicate/beautiful shapes for bento or fondant. Please note as the other reviewer mentioned that the scale is very small and you will need a blunt narrow tool to gently remove the shape. The largest shape is about 3cm across.

I found the scale of this product to be very different from what the picture leads a person to believe. Perhaps the scale of the smallest piece and the largest piece would lend a person perspective on what they are purchasing. The set is really very tiny.

Easy to Use Beautiful to View

I made the leaf ginger cookies as a decoration on our Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. The cutters were very easy to use with the cookies falling away from the cutter as I lifted it. I scored the cookies with imaginary vein lines and rimmed 1/2 of the pie with these cookies arranged in three offset rows. The result was delightful. Our granddaughter took a picture of the pie and posted it to her twitter account. The family raved about the pie which is ironic because except for the cookies the recipe is exactly the same as I have made for years. Impressive!
