Very Coarse
I use this on the in tank inlet for my Oase Biomaster 600 canister . What I have done is eliminated the in canister prefilter on the Oase. By doing that I have increased Flow from filter and stopped purging issue .I originally used the Tetra sponge along with the Oase pre filter and found the Oase prefilter did not get dirty. All detritus was caught by Tetra Pond sponge. So I removed stock oase prefilter and now have the perfect combination for keeping my heavily planted and overstocked 55 gallon aquarium clean .Fish are happy and most of all I am happy . If you have a Biomaster 350,600 or 850 try this. Biomaster 250 does not have purge issues,I know because I own 250,350 and 600 .

Nice course sponge
Good price. Nice course sponge means you only rarely have clean it. Makes it easy

Time saver
Bought pond fountain for small pond in backyard. Kept getting clogged because of sediments in pond. This protection will outlive the fountain. I cut a small piece of fabric and mount to outside of fountain and it catches all the sediment that gets in the pond. Cut a section and mounted it on the fountain, and still running strong two weeks later. No more pulling out old filter and washing it down. If, and when it clogs, just cut another small piece and put back on fountain. No more digging in pond every 3 days to clean filter. Great product for the price

Fits Aquarium Co-op sponge filters!
I needed a replacement sponge for a medium size (20 gallon rating) sponge filter from Aquarium Co-op... unfortunately, I bleached mine after a suspected outbreak of fish TB/mycobacteria, and the bleach made the sponge all tacky and unusable. Aquarium Co-op doesn't sell the sponges separately from the whole filter setup, but the rest of my plastic parts were all fine, so I went on the hunt for a suitable replacement. This is about 2" too tall, but I was able to easily trim it down with scissors, and it fit nicely over the plastic inner frame. The pore size is just a tad larger, and the outer diameter is a tiny bit bigger, but it's a close match and the price was great! I haven't tried it in an aquarium yet, as it will go in my backup quarantine tank when needed, but I think it will work just fine.

After months as a prefilter in tank- I would not use for Fish Tank
I, like many others here, used it as a prefilter with a canister filter. I think my experience is different because ive used other intake prefilters. I bought it because guppies were breeding and the fry could get sucked up, not for the extra filtration so i like how extra course it was, but to my surprise I noticed my tank became much clearer and for less than $5, it was a great quick solution for my future fry. However, the extra coarse of the sponge makes it quite difficult they when removing to clean the sponge. The small particulates would disperse quickly when i lift the sponge. I had to have the Vacuum going whenever i was servicing it. Ive had others prefilters in the past, Homemade, petcos, and Aquarium co-op. In comparison to Aquarium Co-ops intake filter holds the filth in much better when servicing it- Its was just the right amount of coarse SO, for like $5 more, i would get the the intake sponge thats less course, but still Course and greatly reduces my work load. This Sponge after all, it was made for a pond filter which receives much larger sized particulate than an indoors aquarium would ever. I would forgo the extra amount to get another prefilter for aquarium use. To top if off, its has the open hole all the way through, you have yo plug it up with another sponge.

Great! Cut the length to fill hole with AC 110
This is the best aquarium investment I have made in terms of reducing time spent on the dumb fish. I have an aqua clear 110 filter and this works perfectly to reduce filter floss changing and clogging. I cut the length about 1.5 inches shorter so I could use it to fill the center hole at bottom. I just cut it a little bigger than the hole and stuffed it in and it stays perfect. When I clean it out, I use a big fine mesh net from petsmart ($6!) to enclose it before removing it. This keeps it from exploding all the crap as I pull it out. I then just dunk it a bucket and smash it repeatedly with the fury of fish keeper who spends inordinate amounts of time on a pet that lacks empathy and I cannot touch. Fish care about you about as much as a houseplant if you have an auto feeder. What a great prize at a carnival! AMIRIGHT?!

Cut To Use As A Fish Tank Prefilter
I got this prefilter to cut up and use on my 5.5 gallon fresh water Top Fin brand tank. We've had issues recently with 2 Neon Tetra's and a Ghost Shrimp getting stuck to the intake. My Top Fin tank does not have an adjustable flow control and has enough strength to be able to suck up the occasional pebble. Searching on the internet there were lots of suggestions to use foam, mesh, or even pantyhose around the intake. A few people suggested using a pond prefilter because it will not restrict the flow at all. This prefilter is huge and I should have no problem being able to cut 4-5 pre-filters out of this. It's easy to cut and then put the scissors down the center to widen a hole for the intake tube. Once it's over the intake, I trimmed the piece of prefilter around the sides to make it more rounded. After that I cut off part of the bottom, but leaving enough to still cover that opening as well. This should give our Neon Tetra's and ghost shrimp a fighting chance. I'll update this review if we continue to have issues or any negatives come up.

very thick and sturdy.cheap.
put these on my aqueon 75 for pre-filter for Oscars, and this gave me extra life for changing filter in the top of the filters for extra weeks to a month. would not recommend for a fry tank, holes in the sides are too big, about the size of a tip if a pencil eraser, but for ponds or bigger tanks, its golden~!

Very very big!!
I read reviews saying this was big but that they cut it down to size but I didn’t realize how big it actually was. I was looking for a sponge filter that won’t get plugged as quick as the one I have now the problem is the hole in the sponge are so big my fry will definitely be able to get through it so I will be returning but if you are Looking for a big sponge filter that is your guy! The pictures are taken with a normal size dinner plate for reference.

It’s huge
Huge sponge! The photo is AFTER I cut it in half to fit on my Fluval 305 intake. It’s made for a pond, so it’s huge and rigid so keep that in mind. Good for modification of an aquarium canister filter intake with large fish. Small fish may still get caught in the holes

Feels kinda weird
I bought this pre filter sponge for my 45 gallon tank, and when it arrived and I unboxed it, it felt very weird. It didnt feel anything like other sponges. It felt SUPER plasticy. The holes are quite big as well. Not recommended if you have small fry.

Great!
I've used two of these so far as prefilters on the intakes of my aquarium filters. Has made a significant impact on water quality. The hole goes all the way through, but I cut up an extra sponge I had and stuffed it in the one end.
