Impressive Shave

I upgraded to this S9800 model from the S7700 series shaver. The designs are very similar in terms of ergonomics, but I think the shave head surface is a little different between the two with the 9800 providing less resistance when gliding over the skin. I was interested in upgrading to get the pressure sensor feature. And I have had 2 of the 7700 series shavers where the Sense IQ feature stopped working. Both were replaced with new units under warranty. But after the 2nd one failed, I decided to upgrade. Glad I did. I have read some reviews that noted the pressure sensor and light ring are just a gimmick. It lights up in 3 colors indicating too little pressure (blue light), good pressure (green light) and too much pressure (orange light). My first shave wasn't all that close as I was trying to keep the light ring green. HOWEVER, I found in the companion app the ability to customize the pressure sensor for the type of shave you do (dry or wet) and if you use shaving cream or not and how close of a shave you want (standard, close, closest). When I set it up for the closest wet shave with shave gel, it definitely changed the pressure necessary to get the green light to come on. My shave today was perfect. Closest shave I think I have ever had, even on my neck which is usually a trouble spot for me. So, definitely NOT a gimmick. It works as advertised. In addition, through the app, you can adjust the colors used if you are color blind so you can tell the difference between the pressures and what it is trying to tell you. I am not aware of any ability to change this pressure setting using just the menus/display on the handle. So if you aren't using the companion app, try that out. It makes a difference. I know you can turn the light ring on or off using the menus, but not sure about pressure setting. Got the shaver here on Amazon for a great price when compared to what Philips sells them for on their website.

Stopping Razor Burns And Ingrown Hairs

I have been using Norelco razors since 1989. Despite my loong time use, I have found that I have been shaving impropely leading to irritation and ingrown hairs. The LED blue, green and orange lights help keep the pressure correct. The app provides information on the way I'm shaving. I find this razor is easy to clean with the hinged head. The cleaning station works well, although I would have likrd a cover for when the shaver is not in place. The charging station provides a good place to keep the razor for storage, something provided with my last 9800 Series razor. I recommend buying the razor with the cleaning station included. The battery life is good. I do not like the trimmer. I find it awkward and difficult to use. I prefer using my One Blade for trimming my sideburns and trimming the few odd hairs I miss with the razor.

I feel ripped off on the price, but what do I know

I was excited to get it the day it arrived, but was disappointed with the contents of the box, which made me feel like I got ripped off. Basically it was the shaver, charging adapter and hard case, and this silly container of cleaning fluid. I use to sell electric shavers in high school back in 1980 at Fedco, and I knew what the blue fluid was. I'm still trying to figure out if I should throw it away or keep it. Like I need more stuff in my drawers. Back to the shaver in general. The blades are super smooth with that special outer coating, and doesn't cause razor burn for me wet or dry. The shave quality is as close as it gets for a Norelco, in fact even closer than the ones in the 80s. it's easy to hold, and I'm still on the first charge after 3 weeks at 60%. It has cool lights that change colors for some reason, not sure why, but I like it. The trimmer is kind of weird, and doesn't seem to really work that well on side burns, but maybe it's technique. Cleaning it is real easy, and the hard case is nice for storing in the drawer. What I don't like is the control panel, that is always lit. Sort of like the refrigerator light, where you think it's always on and never turns off, reducing battery life. Next the shaver head, where there is all this mass around each blade that extends about a 1/4" out, so when I'm going under my nose, I tend to miss a bit and leave a little stripe. And going under my side burns, can't really tell where the cutting is, but getting better at it now. So it's sort of take the good with the bad for me here, and just settle for this and keep it. Maybe there is a reason for the things I don't like, such as head failure or strength that I didn't consider. As far as my rating goes, I would of given it a 5 at $150 without the cleaning system. I feel like in order for Phillips to maintain margin, they forced me to buy the shaver with the cleaning kit, to get me to purchase cleaning fluid on a subscription basis. I've tried cheaper versions before, but the blades were really rough on my skin.

5/5 for shaving, 3/5 for the useless features

I've had Philips shavers my entire life and about every 5 years I buy a new one, so I'm very familiar with the products they make. I always liked Philips over other brands simply because of the shaving experience, and the Norelco 9800 isn't any different. So let's not waste to much time talking about the actual shaving, because that deserves a 5 out of 5. What bother me is first of all the design. I know you need to make these things look a little different year over year to make them stand out for recurring customers, but this thing looks like a tank. It's big and ugly, terrible design. Other gimmick: the useless features, such as a colored LED to indicate if you're pushing the shaver too hard on your skin, or a screen with digital animations. I like gadgets and things that you can hook up to your smartphone, but all of this goes a step too far for me. It's a SHAVER. So overall still a good product, but next time I prefer going for an entry level Philips shaver than investing money in this bulky hi-end version. It shaves well though, and I guess that's what it's all about...

Una Maravilla

De haber sabido que este tipo de rasuradora a hacían su función de esta manera, la hubiera comprado hace años. Usaba rasuradora a más económicas y sencillas porque pensaba que todas eran similares, pero está hace una diferencia significativa. Corta el vello prácticamente al ras, no irrita, la pila dura mucho tiempo, la funcionalidad en la app es interesante, el kit de limpieza que trae está genial, en verdad es una gran compra, en especial si vienes de rasuradoras más sencillas o rastrillo.

Not worth the money.

Don't be suckered in by all the bells and whistles on this thing... The so called pressure sensor is pointless... Even keeping it in the supposed sweet spot with a green light, I always ended up with razor burn after shaving. The LCD display is pretty dumb too, unless you care about knowing the exact percentage of battery life remaining. It doesn't really shave any better than the razor I was hoping to replace, a Braun Series 7. The way the rotary heads pivot is a terrible design, especially for shaving smaller areas like the upper lip, it keeps catching on my face. Just overall bad ergonomics.
