I bought these to rig fermentation jars instead of buying pre-made drilled lids for upwards of $8-12 each which don't come in small mouth Mason size. We are not mechanical sorts of people but have basic tools. They are indeed 3/8" ID and they do fit easily into a 1/2" drilled hole. My plastic airlock (in photo) is 7/16" (1/16" larger than 3/8") and it fit in the placed grommet though it was tight. My glass airlock is only 1/32" larger than 3/8" and it fit much better. Thickness of the lid material is an issue to consider. Ball/Kerr metal lids are much thinner than standard Ball/Kerr plastic lids. These fit the thickness of the plastic lid perfectly but not the thickness of the metal lids. I used a very light CA glue on the top side of the metal lids to make a firm seal all around - that isn't needed on the plastic lids. Caution - the metal lids are very sharp once cut and there's a burr to contend with. I took a fine file to it before inserting the grommet. The grommet inserts easily if you start one side and then work it around. Use a 3/8" dowel once it's in place to thoroughly seat it and round the hole. Ball/Kerr metal lids and rings are airtight, the plastic lids are not. To set up a rig with plastic lids you will also need a food safe gaskets to complete the seal. Regular mouth are 70mm OD, wide mouth are 86mm OD. You need a 1/2" drill bit to drill these - that's a pretty big drill bit and not included in most home sets. You'll also want to clamp then down while drilling - they will become projectiles if you don't.

Leaks air
These are good but sometimes they leak air (CO2) out of the fermenter bucket around the chilling coil, so that the air lock does not bubble. It makes it appear that the fermentation is stuck. If I put a bit of StarSan solution around the seals, then the air lock starts bubbling again. So I think they should be made slightly thicker or with a slightly smaller inner diameter (1/32" smaller?). Or perhaps they could be a softer rubber that maintains a seal after dry?

Great purchase
These are a must have for the home winemaker. I've used them several times already with 5 gallon pails, and they'd work just fine with mason jars or any jars at all. They come at a good price too.

But great product will be using them to cover the holes ...
Just got these and they are exactly as described. I wish they were in a separate pouch aside from the shipping bag b/c when I opened the bag they were shipped in they went all over the place hahaha! But great product will be using them to cover the holes I drill in wine bottles to feed Christmas lights through.

Brew in nearly anything now!
A half inch hole drilled into a good fitting plastic screw on cap will allow these grommets a great fit for your airlock or tubing. My brewing possibilities have expanded greatly!
