Great for Adults, Not Sure for Kids
MUNCHKIN is a card-based game that has 3+ players working with and against each other. The game has many RPG (Role Playing Game) elements, but it's driven primarily by its sense of goofy humor. It would be hard to sum up what MUNCHKIN is about, but I'll give it a go. Each player is a character in the game that can wear armor, use weapons, hold a race or a class. Upon the beginning of a turn, the player will open a "door" in an attempt to fight off monsters. The object of the game is to reach level 10 -- "levels" are gained here generally through killing monsters. Here's the problem: killing monsters isn't always so easy. In many cases, players will need to enroll the help of other players to defeat the monsters in return for some reward. Gameplay will involve players plotting victory by incorporating armor bonuses, weapon bonuses, various abilities and items, so some rudimentary knowledge of "levels" and "armor" are recommended. No dexterity is needed, but at least some tolerance for goofiness is required. Many of the monsters or items here are pun-based. The illustrations are cartoony, and the game doesn't take itself too seriously: neither should you. This game has a reputation: it breeds treachery, debate, and hostility. Because there aren't really any rules towards diplomacy, and many of the cards allow players to indirectly inflict damage on others, it can cause some quick rivalries. I've played MUNCHKIN several times, and I don't know if I can think of a game ending with everyone satisfied or without a giant fight between friends. For that reason, I'm not sure I can recommend this game for kids -- there's a lot of room for people to become upset, so I would recommend you play this game with a group of easy-going people if you can. MUNCHKIN is as good as the group of people you play it with, chances are, if you enjoy the company of the people you're playing this with, you'll have a great time. [Note on Additional Versions] There are additional versions of MUNCHKIN, regarded as expansions. I'm not sure if the word "expansion" is appropriate. For example, SUPER MUNCHKIN or MUNCHKIN CTHULU, do not require previous installments of the game. They are completely standalone in that regard. You do NOT need to buy the original MUNCHKIN to play many of the spin-off games.

A new game night favorite
We've only had the game for a few days, but so far we've played it a total of six times, you figure each game is one hour long, so basically we've gotten six hours of fun for the affordable price of under twenty bucks. So, way less than we'd spend if my family went out to see a movie and best of all, we didn't even have to leave the house. A little bit about the game, it seemed a bit complicated at first. We followed the directions, give each player four cards each from the two stacks, that part was basic, but we ended up folding and unfolding the game play instructions trying to figure out what to do next. Basically, each player tries to level up. Levelling up can be achieved in just a few ways, 1. defeating a monster (which you can only do if you have enough levels, which means you may need to, 2. buy a level, by selling magical items or 3. get a level up treasure card. The game seemed a bit slow at first because each player starts with just one level which is too low to start fighting monsters. But the game picked up when we'd all gotten to level three. The monsters can be defeated by more than one player, so one minute I was sabotaging my son's chances at winning another level, the next we were fighting flying frogs together and sharing in the loot! The cards themselves give you directions, telling you to add 5 to fight a monster (very useful card to use against your opponents) or that certain magical items can only be used by certain characters; dwarves, elves, etc. By the time we played a third time, we knew the game well enough to start levelling curses at each other and how to steal each others treasures. Munchkin has a lot of extender packs, munchkin zombie, munchkin the guild (I just bought this one, yay!) etc. that add to the original game set. Since we play a lot of games here at home, monopoly, settlers of catan, telepathy, zombie dice, risk, etc. figuring out the basic rules wasn't terribly difficult, but I think looking at a few munchkin blogs could prove helpful (yep, there really are munchkin blogs.)

Tedious to learn-- but can become your favorite game
Long time fan of Steve Jackson Games. Would purchase any game that has this name on it and trust the quality of game play. I bought this for our 11 year old son for Christmas, who is big into Magic and other games with similar platform and dungeon antics (D&D). He gets the humor and begs everyone to play anytime there is more than 3 people assembled in a room, regardless of their experience. We use pennies/quarters as level tokens, and who ever wins gets to keep the loot. (It would be cheaper to just buy a d10 for everybody!) I hadn't played this in nearly a decade, and don't remember the directions being nearly this intricate--or humorous! (Pretty sure it was a single page back then, now 3 tri folds). It was eas(ier) to explain to my 11 year old son who understands how these games are played. But trying to explain to the grandparents, father, brothers, etc-- a bit tedious and cumbersome and personally, had I never played before, would probably have opted out of the game entirely. This is not a game night game for first time players. If anyone you know has ever played, seek them for counsel on learning how to play. Be prepared, upon first play to study the directions and the intentions of each type of card. Set aside two hours, at least, to read each card, and understand how it is used. Do a dry run, with everyone's hands showing. If you're going to lose people's interest--you'll lose them in the first hand. Then it will get fun. Understand that it does get better! It does get smoother! It does make sense! And more fun! .....And that a dwarf battling a Level 14 Insurance salesman is cause for milk blowing out someone's nose! It can quickly become your favorite game. Just hang in there.

Fun and highly amusing game
This is a card game that pokes fun at Dungeons and Dragons and similar role-playing games. The game takes the format of a dungeon crawl where you bash down a door by turning over a 'Door' card to reveal a monster, curse or other cards you can play. And with the slaying of monsters, you gain treasure by turning over 'Treasure' cards which are usually helpful items such as 'Sneaky Bastard Sword' or 'Yuppie Water' for elves. You have cards that allow you to be various character classes such as cleric, thief, wizard or warrior, as well as races such as elf, halfling or dwarf, each with their special abilities. Your gender also has an effect too, as the Amazon will not fight female players, instead giving them treasure. And you can change these cards almost at any time, so that in the middle of combat you can say "Forget being a dwarf warrior, I'm now an elf thief!". The great thing about this game is that even when it's not your turn, you have plenty of oppurtunities to play, since you can help somebody fight a monster (for a cut of the treasure of course, unless you were forced to fight by a magical item), steal from somebody else or curse somebody else. It's simple to learn and play is fast. You don't have to be a Dungeons and Dragons veteran to enjoy the game either, although you will understand the many in jokes if you are. I played the game with my wife and a friend who wouldn't go near a Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook with a barge pole +5 and they both enjoyed the game. It says a game lasts an hour. The games I have played usually last longer, but that's probably because we spend so much time laughing at the amusing illustrations on each card as they are revealed. Highly recommended.
